अतो हास्यतरं लोके किञ्चिदन्यन्न विद्यते ।
यत्र दुर्जनमित्याह दुर्जनः सज्जनं स्वयम् ॥ ६२८
Ato hasyataram loke kinchidanyanna vidyate |
Yatra durjanamityaha durjnah sajjanam svayam ||
Nothing in this world is more ridiculous than one who is bad himself should name the good men as wicked.

अथवा जायमानस्य यच्छीलमनुजायते ।
श्रूयते तन्महाराज नामृतस्यापसर्पति ॥ ३.८.११
Atava Jaayamaanasya Yachheelamanujaayate.
Shruyate Tanmaharaja Naamritsyaapasarpati ॥ 3.8.11
O king!The nature (svabhava)which is inherited at the time of birth, it is said, never leaves a being till death.- Vyasa to Dharmaputra

अथवा वसतो राजन्वने वन्येन जीवतः ।
द्रव्येषु यस्य ममता मृत्योरास्ये स वर्तते ॥ १२.१३.१०
Athavaa Vasato Raajn vane Vanyena Jiivath.
Draveshu Yasya Mamataa Mrityoraasye sa vartate ॥ 12.13.10
O king, one who lives in the forest and subsists on fruits and roots, and still entertains selfishness about worldly things, should be considered as truly in the jaws of death. - Sahadeva to Dharmaraja

अदत्तस्यानुपादानं दानमध्ययनं तपः ।
अहिंसा सत्यमक्रोध इज्या धर्मस्य लक्षणम् ॥ १२.३६.१०
Adattasyaanupaadanam daanam adhyayanam tapah I
Ahimsa Satyamakrodh Ijya Dharmasya Saksanam ॥ 12.36.10
“Not taking away things for oneself which aren’t given voluntarily (non-stealing), charity, the study of scriptures, penance - austerities, nonviolence, truthfulness, being free from anger and performing yajña-s are the features of dharma”.  

अद्रोहः सर्वभूतेषु कर्मणा मनसा गिरा ।
अनुग्रहश्च दानं च शीलमेतत्प्रशस्यते ॥ १२.१२४.६६
Adroha: Sarvabhuteshu karmana manasa gira I
Anugrahascha daanam cha sheelam etat pprashasyate II12.124.66
Non-malice to all creatures by deeds, thoughts, and words, and showing kindness and doing charity, these are Spoken as the elements of virtuous living.

अद्रोहेणैव भूतानामल्पद्रोहेण वा पुनः ।
या वृत्तिः स परोधर्मस्तेन जीवामि जाजले ॥ १२.२६२.६
Adrohenaiva Bhutanamalpadrohena vaa punah I
Yaa vruttih sa Parodharmastena Jiiwami Jajale ॥ 12.262.6
O Jajale, to live with out injuring any animal or with least injury to them , is the best form of dharma, following which I live. (Vaiysya to brahmin)
अधनं दुर्बलं प्राहुर्धनेन बलवान्भवेत् ।
सर्वं धनवता प्राप्यं सर्वं तरति कोशवान् ॥ १२.१३०.४९
Adhanam Durbalam Prahur dhanena Balwanbhavet I
Sarvam dhanavata prapyam sarvam tarati koshavaan II
Poverty, it is said, causes weakness; wealth makes one strong. Nothing is beyond the rich, one who has large treasure can overcome all obstacles. 

अधनाद्धि निवर्तन्ते ज्ञातयः सुहृदो द्विजाः ।
अपुष्पादफलाद्वृक्षाद्यथा कृष्ण पतत्त्रिणः ॥ ५.७२.२०
Adhanaddhi Nivrante gyaatayas suhrudo dvijaah I
Apushpaada phalad vrikshad yatha Krishna Patattrinah: ॥ 5.72.20
Just as the birds abandon the flowerless and fruitless trees, the relatives and friends of a poor man forsake him.

अङ्कुशं शौचमित्याहुरथानामुपधारणे ।
आनाम्य फलितां शाखां पक्वं पक्वं प्रशातयेत् ॥ १.१४०.२०
Ankusam soucham ityaahurathaanam upadhaarane I
Aanaamya phalitaam shaakhaam pakvam pakvam pashaatayet II
Hiding behind the attire of a dharmic person is used as a strategy, as one bends the branch of a fruit-laden tree to pluck the well-ripened fruits.

अचिन्त्याः खलु ये भावा न तांस्तर्केण साधयेत् ।
प्रकृतिभ्यः परं यत्तु तदचिन्त्यस्य ल

क्षणम् ॥ ६.५.१२
Achintyaah khalu ye bhavaa na taam tarkena saadhayet I
Prakrutibhyah param yattu tadachintyasya lakshanam II
The state of existence which are indeed unthinkable, one should not establish there existence through reason. Whatever is beyond the reach of The Three Modes of Prakriti, that is called "Achintya".

अज्ञश्चाश्रद्दधानश्च संशयात्मा विनश्यति ।
नायं लोकोऽस्ति न परो न सुखं संशयात्मनः ॥ ६.२८.४०
ajñaśh chāśhraddadhānaśh cha sanśhayātmā vinaśhyati
nāyaṁ loko ’sti na paro na sukhaṁ sanśhayātmanaḥ
But persons who possess neither faith nor knowledge, and who are of a doubting nature, suffer a downfall. For the skeptical souls, there is no happiness either in this world or the next. ( from bhagavad gita )

अज्ञानेनावृतो लोकः ॥ ३.३१३.८२
People are wrapped in ignorance.

अञ्जलिः शपथः सान्त्वं शिरसा पादवन्दनम् ।
आशाकरणमित्येवं कर्तव्यं भूतिमिच्छता ॥ १.१४०.६७
Anjalih shapathah shantvam shirasaa padavandanam I
Aashaakaranamityevam kartavyam bhootim ichchataa II
Salutations with folded hands, swearing, soft speech,showing respect by putting head on the feet, and controlling lust – these are things a king should follow if he desires prosperity.

अज्ञानतिमिरान्धस्य लोकस्य तु विचेष्टतः ।
ज्ञानाञ्जनशलाकाभिर्नेत्रोन्मीलनकारकम् ॥ १.१.८४
Ajnanatimirandhasya Lokasya Tu Vicheshta:
Gnananjanashalakabhirnetronmeelankarakam ॥ 1.1.84
The wisdom of Maha bharatham, like the stick used for applying collyrium, has opened the eyes of the world which were covered by the  darkness of ignorance.

अतिक्रान्तं हि यत्कार्यं पश्चाच्चिन्तयते नरः ।
तच्चास्य न भवेत्कार्यं चिन्तया च विनश्यति ॥ ८.३१.२९
Atikrantam Hi Yatkaryam Pashchachintayate Narah.
Tachasya na bhavetkaryam chintayaa cha vinashyati ॥ 8.31.29
One who is brooding over the past and keeps worrying without focussing on work on hand, will be destroyed by that worry.

अति धर्माद्बलं मन्ये बलाद्धर्मः प्रवर्तते ।
बले प्रतिष्ठितो धर्मो धरण्यामिव जङ्गमम् ॥ १२.१३४.६
Ati dharmadbal manye baladharma: Pravatte.
Bale Prestige Dharmo Dharnyamiv Jangamam ॥ 12.134.6
energy is superior to Dharma, since dharma grows with energy; just as all movable objects depend on the support of the earth, dharma rests on the support of energy.

अतियोगमयोगं च श्रेयसोऽर्थी परित्यजेत् ॥ १२.२८७.२४
AtiyogamayogaAtiyogamayogam cha shreyorthi Parityajet ॥ 12.287.24
A man desirous of well-being should completely give up both excessive indulgence and total abstention from enjoyment in object of the senses.

अतीतेष्वनपेक्षा ये प्राप्तेष्वर्थेषु निर्ममाः ।
शौचमेव परं तेषां येषां नोत्पद्यते स्पृहा ॥ १३.१०८.१०
Ateeteshvanapeksha ye prapteshvartheshu nirmamaah I
Souchameva param teshaam yesham na utpadyate spruhaa II
Those who are indifferent when wealth is lost and are detached when wealth is obtained, and whose mind do not arise from covetousness, become highly purified.

From this blog onwards I am planning to upload subhashithani from Mahabharata in the alphabetical order. I am aware it is a massive task beyond my capacity; but as an instrument of the lord nothing is beyond reach. Let me begin with the invocation verse:

नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम् ।
देवीं सरस्वतीं व्यासं ततो जयमुदीरयेत् ॥ ४ ॥
nārāyaṇaṁ namaskṛtya naraṁ caiva narottamam
devīṁ sarasvatīṁ vyāsaṁ tato jayam udīrayet
Before reciting this Mahabharatham, which is the very means of conquest, one should offer respectful obeisances unto the Personality of Godhead, Nārāyaṇa, unto Nara-nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi, the supermost human being, unto mother Sarasvatī, the goddess of learning, and unto Śrī Vyāsadeva, the author.

अकाले कृत्यमारब्धं कर्तुर्नार्थाय कल्प्यते ।
तदेव काले आरब्धं महतेऽर्थाय कल्प्यते ॥
akāle kṛtyamārabdhaṃ karturnārthāya kalpyate ।
tadeva kāle ārabdhaṃ mahate'rthāya kalpyate
Any work started at a wrong time will not bear fruit. The same work started at the right time are said to bring to the doer great results.

अकृत्वा मानुषं कर्म यो दैवमनुवर्तते।
वृथा श्राम्यति सम्प्राप्य पतिं क्लीबमिवाङ्गना।। ॥ १३।६।२०
Akrutva maanusham karma yo daivam anuvartate I
Vruthaa shraamyati samprapya patim kleebam ivaanganaa II
He who without performing his duties as a human depends only on providence, acts in vain, like the woman with an impotent husband.

अकृत्वा कर्म यो लोके फलं विन्दति धिष्ठितः ।
स तु वक्तव्यतां याति द्वेष्यो भवति भूयशः ॥ १०.२.१७
Akrutvaa karma yo loke phalam vindati dhishtitah I
Sa tu vaktavyataam yaati dveshyo bhavati bhooyasah II
If one obtains power with out any effort, gets immense benefits, he is slandered in the world and deserves the hatred of others.

अगोप्तास्च राजानो बलिशद्भाग तस्कराः I

 समर्थास् चाफ्यदातारस्ते वै निरयगामिनः II
Agoptaascha raajaano balishadbhaga taskaraah I
Samarthascha api adaataarah te vai nirayagaaminah II
Kings who do not protect their subjects who forcibly collect one sixth as taxes. are like robbers; also those who avoid paying taxes even though capable  go to hell.

अग्निस्तेजो महल्लोके गूढस्तिष्ठति दारुषु ।
न चोपयुङ्क्ते तद्दारु यावन्नोद्दीप्यते परैः ॥ ५.३७.६०
Agnistejo mahalloke gutastishtati darushu I
Na cha upayungte tat daaru yaavan na udeepyate paraih II
Fire-energy in this world is hidden inside wood; but unless kindled by others it cannot use it.

 अग्नौ प्रास्तं तु पुरुषं कर्मान्वेति स्वयं कृतम् ।
तस्मात्तु पुरुषो यत्नाद्धर्मं सञ्चिनुयाच्छनैः ॥ ५.४०.१८
Agnau prastam tu purusham karmaanveti svayam krutam I
Tasmaatu purusho yatnaat dharmam sancchinuyaachanaih II
The results of actions, punya and paapaa, accompanies a person who is placed in the funeral fire; it is therefore important for a man to slowly and diligently accumulate punyaa.

अग्न्याधानेन यज्ञेन काषायेण जटाजिनैः ।
लोकान्विश्वासयित्वैव ततो लुम्पेद्यथा वृकः ॥ १.१४०.१९
Agnyaa dhaanena yagnena kaashayena jataajinaih I
Lokaan visvaasayitvaiva tato lumped yatha vrukah II
One should first gain the trust of people by performing Agnihotra, Yagya, wearing saffron cloth and maintain braided hair and hide skin cover; then attack them like a wolf and destroy them.

AAYUH-आयुः-2- LIFE-SPAN

 SUBHASHITHANI:614

आयुः पुमान् यशः स्वर्ग कीर्तिं पुण्यं बलं श्रियं I
पशुसुखं धनं धान्यं प्रप्नुयान्मातृ वन्दनात् II
Aayuh pumaan yashah svarga keertim punyam balam shriyam I
Pasu sukham dhanam dhaanyam praapnuyat maatru vandanaat II
One who serves his mother truthfully will be blessed with long life,  honour, heaven, fame, merit, strength, prosperity; cattle, happiness, wealth, and grains.

सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् ।
चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनमायुर्वर्धनमुत्तमम् ॥५॥Aditya hrudayam
Sarva-Manggala-Maanggalyam Sarva-Paapa-Prannaashanam |
Cintaa-Shoka-Prashamanam-Aayur-Vardhanam-Uttamam ||5||
Salutations to the Sun God- He is the bestower of all-round Welfare, and the remover of all Sins ; He heals the worries and griefs  and imbues one with the excellent splendour of the Sun which increases the Life Span.

आदित्यस्य नमस्कारान् ये कुर्वन्ति दिने दिने I
आयुः प्रज्ञा बलं वीर्यं तेजस्तेषां च जायते II
Aadityasya namaskaaraan ye kurvanti dine dine I
Aayuh pragyaa balam veeryam tejas tesham cha jaayate II
One who salutes every day the sun god will obtain long life, knowledge, strength, valour and vitality. 

आचाराल्लभते  ह्यायुः  आचरादीप्सिताः प्रजाः I
आचराद्धनमक्षयं आचारो  हन्त्यलक्षणम्  II
Aacharaan labhate hyaayuh Acharaadeepsitaah prajaah I
Aacharad dhanamakshayam Aacharo hantyalakshanam II
Living according to traditional conduct gives long life,
Peoples wishes are satisfied by traditional conduct,
It gives ever increasing wealth, It destroys inauspiciousness

आयुषः क्षण एकोऽपि सर्वरत्नैर्न न लभ्यते ।
नीयते स वृथा येन प्रमादः सुमहानहो ॥"
aayuShah kshaNa ekopi sarvaratnairna labhyate
naayate tad vruthaa yena praamaadah sumahaanaho
Even a single second in life cannot be obtained back by all precious jewels. Hence spending it wastefully is a great mistake.

न  तत्र  वीरा जायन्ते  नारोग्यं  न  शतायुषः I
न  च  श्रेयो  अधिगच्छन्तियत्र श्राद्धं विवर्जितम् II
Na tatra veera jaayante naarogyam na shataayushah I
Na cha shreyo adhigacchantiyatra shraaddham vvarjitam II
Where the ceremonies for the dead relatives are not performed, there no brave men are born, there will be disease, and no one will live hundred years.

अनारोग्यं  अनायुष्यं  अस्वर्ग्यं  च अति   भोजनं I
अपुण्यं  लोक  विद्विष्टं  तस्मात् तत्  परिवर्जयेत् II
Anaarogyam anaayushyam asvargyam chaati bhojanam I
Apunyam loka vidvishtam tasmaat tat parivarjayet II
Indifferent health, short life, denial of heaven, lack of religious merits and censure by general public await those who over eat; therefore, over eating should be avoided.

व्यायामात् लभते स्वास्थ्यं दीर्घायुष्यं बलं सुखं।
आरोग्यं परमं भाग्यं स्वास्थ्यं सर्वार्थसाधनम् II
Vyāyāmāt Labhate Svāsthyaṁ Dīrghāyuṣyaṁ Balaṁ Sukhaṁ.
Ārogyaṁ Paramaṁ Bhāgyāṁ Svāsthyaṁ Sarvārthasādhanaṁ.
Exercise results in good health, long life, strength and happiness. Good health is the greatest blessing. Health is means of everything.

गङ्गेवाघ विनाशिनि जनमनःसंतोशवच्चन्द्रिका
तीक्ष्णांशोरापि सत्प्रभेव जगदज्ञानान्धकारापहा I
छायेवाखिल ताप नाशनकरि स्वर्धेनुवत्कामदा
पुण्यैरेव हि लभ्यते सुकृतिभिः सत्सन्गतिर्दुर्लभा II
Gangevaadha vinaashini janamanah santoshavat chandrikaa
Teekshanaaamshorapi satprabheva jagat agyaana andhakaaraapahaaI
Chaayvaakhila taapa nashanakari svardhenu vatkaamadhaa
Punyaireva hi labhyate sukrutibhih satsangatir durlabhaa II
It is like ganga in washing away one’s sins, is like the moon in bringing happiness in the minds of people, it destroys the darkness of ignorance, it removes pain of the people, grants all wishes like Kamadhenu, it is obtained only by the merited, the company of the good is not obtained easily.

जाड्या धियो हरति सिञ्चति वाचि सत्यं
मानोन्नतिं दिशति पापमपाकरोति।
चेत: प्रसादयति दिक्षु तनोति कीर्ति
सत्संगति: कथय किं न करोति पुंसाम्॥

Jaddyam dhiyo harati sinchati vachi satyam,
Manonnatim dishati paapamakaroti.
Chetah prasaadayati dikshu tanoti kirtim,
Satsangatihi kathaya kim na karoti pusam.
The companionship of good people removes the inertia of one's mind, nurtures truth in the speech, enhances prestige, expiates the sins, comforts the conscience, spreads the name and fame in all directions. Say! what good is there which the company of devout does not bring to a man.

कल्पद्रुमः कल्पितमेव सूते सा कामधुक्कामितमेव दोग्धि।
चिन्तामणिश्चिन्तितमेव दत्ते सतां हि सङ्गेः सकलं प्रसूते।।
Kalpadrumah kalpitameva soote saa kaamadhuk kaamitameva dogdhi I
Chintaamani chintitameva date sataam hi sange sakalam prasute II
The mythical ‘Kalpadruma’ fulfils a desire only after being asked for, the ‘Kaamadhenu’ also fulfils a wish  on being asked for. Likewise, ‘Chintamani’ also gives anything on being asked for, but in the company of noble and righteous persons we get everything without asking. 

यदि सज्जनगोष्ठिषु भविष्यसि भविष्यसि ।
तथा सत्सङ्गनिरतो पतिष्यसि पतिष्यसि ॥  हितोपदेश

yadi satsa~nganirato bhaviShyasi bhaviShyasi I
tathaa sajjanagoShThiShu patiShyasi patiShyasi II

You live with pride only when you are in the company of the virtuous; likewise if you are in bad company you will fall.

संस्नाप्यापि करी चेन्मुक्तो मलिनः क्षणाद् भवति
स्नानान्ते यदिबद्धस्तिष्ठेदमलः तथैव सत्सङ्गात् ।
जातं परमपवित्रं मनः पुनर्वो विषयिसहवासात्
मलिनं स्यात्तच्चेशे बद्धं तिष्ठेत्सुनिर्मलं नूनम् ॥ 

samsnApya api karI chet mukto malinaH kShaNAd bhavati
snAnAnte yadi baddhaH tiShThet amalaH tathA eva sat sangAt।
jAtaM paramapavitraM manaH punarvo viShayisahavAsAt
malinaM syAt tat cha iishe baddham tiShThet sunirmalam nUnam ॥ –

After washing the elephant, if it is left free, it will get muddy in a second. But if you keep it restrained, then it will remain clean. Similarly, our mind becomes clean when it comes in contact with a virtuous people. But if you talk to rogue later, it will again become polluted. However, if you can restrain it by thinking about God at all times, then it can be kept clean and pure. 

सद्भिरेव सहासीत सद्भिः कुर्वीत सङ्गतिम् ।
सद्भिर्विवादं मैत्रीं च नासद्भिः किञ्चिदाचरेत्॥

sadbhireva sahāsīta sadbhiḥ kurvīta saṅgatim ।
sadbhirvivādaṃ maitrīṃ ca nāsadbhiḥ kiñcidācaret॥
Be with good people, associate with good people, have even an argument or friendship with good people, Do not have anything to do with the wicked people.

चन्दनं शीतलं लोके ,चन्दनादपि चन्द्रमाः |
चन्द्रचन्दनयोर्मध्ये शीतला साधुसंगतिः ||
Chandanam sheetalam loke chandnaadapi chandramaa.I
Chandra chandanayormadhye sheetalaa saadhu sangatih II
Sandalwood is well known in public for its coolness but the Moon is considered  to be cooler.    But more than sandalwood and the Moon keeping the company of sages is the coolest.

त्यज दुर्जनसंसर्गं भज साधुसमागमम् ।
कुरु पुण्यमहोरात्रं स्मर सर्वेश्वरं सदा ॥
tyaja durjanasaṃsargaṃ bhaja sādhusamāgamam ।
kuru puṇyamahorātraṃ smara sarveśvaraṃ sadā ॥
Leave the proximity of evildoers; resort to the company of the noble. Perform virtuous deeds day and night, remember the Lord all the time.
