आत्मापराधवृक्षस्य फलान्येतानि देहिनाम् ।

दारिद्र्यरोगदुःखानि बन्धनव्यसनानि च ॥ चाण्क्य नीति
ātmāparādhavṛkṣasya phalānyetāni dehinām ।
dāridryarogaduḥkhāni bandhanavyasanāni ca ॥ chāṇkya nīti

For beings, these are the fruit from
the tree of follies of the self: poverty, disease, suffering, restraint and
adversity.
विदेशेषु
धनं विद्या व्यसनेषु धनं मति:।
परलोके धनं धर्म: शीलं सर्वत्र वै धनम्॥
परलोके धनं धर्म: शीलं सर्वत्र वै धनम्॥
Knowledge is wealth
in a foreign land. Intelligence is wealth in tough times. Righteousness is
wealth in other world. Verily, Good Character is wealth everywhere and at all
the times!
व्यसनानंतरं सौख्यं स्वल्पमप्यधिकं भवेत् ।
काषायरसमास्वाद्य स्वाद्वतीवांबु विंदते ॥

vyasanAntaram saukhyam svalpam api adhikam bhavet ।
kAShAya rasam aasvAdya svAdu atIva ambu vindate ॥

That sweetness that follows misery
will look like a lot even when it is little. After drinking a bitter medicine,
even plain water seems sweet.
काव्यशास्त्रविनोदेन कालो गच्छति धीमताम्।
व्यसनेन तु मूर्खाणां निद्रया कलहेन वा॥
The wise utilize their time enjoying poetry and scriptures whereas fools
waste it in bad habits, sleep and quarrel.
अश्नुते स हि कल्याणं व्यसने यो न मुह्यति I Kathaasaritsaagaram
Aśnute sa hi kalyāṇaṃ vyasane yo na muhyati
Only one who does not lose his cool in adversity will enjoy prosperity

Kāmaṃ vyasanavṛkṣasya mūlaṃ durjanasaṃgatiḥ
The root cause of
sorrow is the company of bad people.
रोगशोकपरीतापबन्धनव्यसनानि च ।
आत्मापराधवृक्षाणां फलान्येतानि
देहिनाम् ॥१.४२॥

Disease, sadness, pain,
bondage, and sorrow: all these are the fruits obtained by men from the tree called ‘ sinning against the self ‘
भूयो विनयमास्थाय भव नित्यं जितेंद्रियः ।
कामक्रोधसमुत्थानि त्यजेथा व्यसनानि च ॥Ramayana
You must be humble always. You must
control your senses and not become their slaves. You must give up all habits

Bhedah vairam avisvaasah samspardhaa vysanaani cha II
Stealing, violence, false-hood, ostentation, lust, anger, self-boasting,
arrogance, dividing people, enmity, suspicion,jealousy and adversity. ( These are the
bad habits possible while one is after gaining wealth )
पानं
स्त्री मृगया द्यूतमर्थदूषणमेव च |
वाग्दण्डयोश्च पारुष्यं व्यसनानि महीभुजां ||
वाग्दण्डयोश्च पारुष्यं व्यसनानि महीभुजां ||

These are the bad habits that should
not be found in a king - alcoholism, promiscuousness , interest in hunting,
gambling, wasting money, harsh words and rough demeanour.
दश काम समुत्थानि तथाष्टौ क्रोधजानि च।
व्यसनानि दुरंतानि प्रयत्नेन विवर्जयेत्।।Manu smruti

A wise man shall shun the ten ruinous vices springing from love of pleasure, as also the eight arising from anger.

Ten bad habits arising out of kaama :Hunting, Gambling,Day dreaming, insulting others, promiscuousness, pride,alcoholism,dancing, music,and roaming aimlessly.
पैशुन्यं साहसं मोहं ईर्ष्यासूयार्थ
दूषणम्।
वाग्दण्डजं च पारुष्यं क्रोधजोपिगणोष्टकः।।Manu smruti
Eight bad habits arising out of anger ( krodha ) are: Crookedness, adventure, delusion, jealousy,
finding fault in others, abusing, harshness, and hatred.
देशभङ्गे प्रवासे वा व्याधिषु व्यसनेष्वपि ।
रक्षेदेव स्वदेहादि पश्चाद्धर्मं समाचरेत् ॥Parasara

When the country is being plundered
(by enemies), when on travel, when ill, when in trouble - one must strive to
protect his own body. Only later must he worry about following Dharma (the
moral code of life).
जानीयात्संगरे भृत्यान् बान्धवान् व्यसनागमे ।
आपत्कालेषु मित्राणि भार्यां च विभवक्षये ॥

mitraani bhaaryaam ca vibhavakshaye ||
Truth of servant's loyalty is revealed in time of work, relatives’
genuineness in time of adversity, friends in time of danger and
wife's love in time of loss of wealth.
आतुरे व्यसने प्राप्ते, दुर्भिक्षे शत्रुसंकटे ।
राजद्वारे श्मशाने च यस्तिष्ठति स बान्धवः ॥Chanakya neeti

In sickness, misfortune, famine, danger from
enemy,

व्यसने मित्रपरीक्षा, शूरपरीक्षा
रणांगणे ।
विनये भृत्यपरीक्षा, दानपरीक्षाश्च

Real Friendship is
tested during adversity. Warrior's heroism is tested during a war. Servant's
test lies in his humility towards his master. Donor's act is tested at the time
of famine.
व्यसनानि
च सर्वाणि त्यजेथा भूरिदक्षिण |
न चैव न प्रयुञ्जीत सङ्गं तु परिवर्जयेत् |Mahabharata

Vyasanaani cha sarvaani tyajethaa bhooridakshina.
Na chaiva na prayunjeet sangam to parivarjayet.
O Yudhishthira ! provider of many rewards and amenities to your
subjects, you should give up all sorts of addictions, but it does not
mean that you should altogether give up courage and firmness needed to fight
with your enemies (because these qualities are necessary to conquer the
enemies).
