For beings, these are the fruit from the tree of follies of the self: poverty, disease, suffering, restraint and adversity.

Knowledge is wealth in a foreign land. Intelligence is wealth in tough times. Righteousness is wealth in other world. Verily, Good Character is wealth everywhere and at all the times!

That sweetness that follows misery will look like a lot even when it is little. After drinking a bitter medicine, even plain water seems sweet.

The wise utilize their time enjoying poetry and scriptures whereas fools waste it in bad habits, sleep and quarrel.
I Kathaasaritsaagaram
Only one who does not lose his cool in adversity will enjoy prosperity
Kāma vyasanavkasya mūla durjanasagati
The root cause of sorrow is the company of bad people.

Ramayana
You must be humble always. You must control your senses and not become their slaves. You must give up all habits that will increase lust and anger in you. (As told by Dasharatha to Sri Rama)

A wise man shall shun the ten ruinous vices springing from love of pleasure, as also the eight arising from anger.

।Manu smruti

When the country is being plundered (by enemies), when on travel, when ill, when in trouble - one must strive to protect his own body. Only later must he worry about following Dharma (the moral code of life).

Truth of servant's loyalty is revealed  in time of work, relatives’ genuineness   in time of adversity, friends in time of danger and wife's love in time of loss of wealth.
Chanakya neeti

āture vyasane prāpte, durbhike śatrusakae ।
r
ājadvāre śmaśāne ca yastiṣṭhati sa bāndhava
In sickness, misfortune, famine, danger from enemy,
royal appearance, and mortality one who stands by [you] is [really] a relative.

।  Vidura neeti

Real Friendship is tested during adversity. Warrior's heroism is tested during a war. Servant's test lies in his humility towards his master. Donor's act is tested at the time of famine.

O Yudhishthira ! provider of many rewards and amenities to your subjects, you should give up all sorts of  addictions, but it does not mean that you should altogether give up courage and firmness needed to fight with your enemies (because these qualities are necessary to conquer the enemies).
