इन्द्रियाणि
पुरा जित्वा जितं त्रिभुवनं त्वया ।
स्मरद्भरिव तैद्वैरं इन्द्रियैरेव निर्जितः ।। रामायण, युद्धकाण्ड

smaradbhiriva tadvairam indriyaireva nirjitaḥ ॥ Rāmāyaṇa, yuddhakāṇḍa

Formerly, by winning over your senses,
the three worlds were won by you. As if in memory of that
enmity, you were defeated by the same senses.

जीयंतां दुर्जया देहे रिपवश्चक्षुरादयः ।
जितेषु ननु लोकोऽयं तेषुकृत्स्नस्त्वया जितः ॥
jIyantAm durjayA deha ripavaH cakShuH AdayaH ।जितेषु ननु लोकोऽयं तेषुकृत्स्नस्त्वया जितः ॥
jiteShu nanu loko ayam teShu kRutsnaH tvayA jitaH ॥ - kirAtArjunIya
One must control the enemies with in
his own body - eyes and other senses. If one has control over them, then it is
equivalent to have won over the whole world.
सा श्रीर्या न मदं कुर्यात्स सुखी तृष्णयोज्झितः ।
तन्मित्रं यत्र विश्वासः पुरुषः स जितेंद्रियः ॥
तन्मित्रं यत्र विश्वासः पुरुषः स जितेंद्रियः ॥
sA shrIH yA na madam kuryAt sa sukhI tRuShNa yo jjhitaH ।
tat mitram yatra vishvAsaH puruShaH sa jitendriyaH ॥
tat mitram yatra vishvAsaH puruShaH sa jitendriyaH ॥
Money is called wealth only when it
does not intoxicate you. You can be happy only when you don't have any desires.
He is a friend only when he can be trusted. One can be called as a man only
when he can control his senses.
इन्द्रियाणां विचरतां विषयेष्वपहारिषु ।
संयमे यत्नमातिष्ठेद् विद्वान् यन्तैव वाजिनाम् ॥ Manu 2.88
indriyāṇāṃ vicaratāṃ viṣayeṣvapahāriṣu Iसंयमे यत्नमातिष्ठेद् विद्वान् यन्तैव वाजिनाम् ॥ Manu 2.88
saṃyame yatnamātiṣṭhed vidvān yantaiva vājinām ||
The wise
man should put forth an effort to restrain his organs roaming among alluring
objects; just as the driver restrains the horses.
श्रुत्वा
स्पृष्ट्वा च दृष्ट्वा च भुक्त्वा घ्रात्वा च यो नरः ।
न हृष्यति ग्लायति वा स विज्ञेयो जितेन्द्रियः । ।
That man may be considered to have (really) subdued his organs, who on
hearing and touching and seeing, on tasting and smelling (anything) neither
rejoices nor repines.
इन्द्रियं
विजितं येन तेनैव भुवनं जितं ।
यश्चेन्द्रियैः पराभूतः स सर्वत्र पराजितः ।।
Indriyam vijitam yena tenaiva bhuvanam
jitam.
Yashchedriyaih paraabhootaa sa sarvatra paraajitah.
Whosoever is
successful in overpowering (controlling) his sensory
organs and the organs of action, it is as if he has won this entire world. However, a person who has been a slave to his sense organs , faces defeat in every walk of life.
आत्मानं रथिनं विद्धि शरीरं रथमेव तु।
बुद्धिं तु सारथिं विद्धि मनः प्रगहमेव च॥
इन्द्रियाणि हयानाहुíवषयांस्तेषु गोचरान्।
आत्मेन्द्रियमनोयुक्तं भोक्तेत्याहुर्मनीषिणः॥
Buddhim tu sarathim viddhi manaha pragahameva
cha॥
Indriyãni hayãnãhurvishayãnsteshu gocharãn
Ãtmendriyamanoyuktam
bhoktetyãhurmaneeshinaha॥
O
Nachiketa! This body is the chariot and this atma is its owner, the charioteer.
The buddhi is its driver. The mind is its reins. The indriyas are the horses
pulling the chariot. The objects of taste, touch, etc. are its path. Thus, the
atma uses the indriyas and anthkaran as a means to enjoy worldly pleasures.
Understand in this way’ (Katha Upanishad 3/3-4).
यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वश: |
इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता || BG2.58||
yadā
sanharate chāyaṁ kūrmo ’ṅgānīva
sarvaśhaḥ
indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyas tasya prajñā pratiṣhṭhitā
One who is able to withdraw the senses
from their objects, just as a tortoise withdraws its limbs into its shell, is
established in divine wisdom.
इन्द्रियाणां हि चरतां यन्मनोऽनुविधीयते |
तदस्य हरति प्रज्ञां वायुर्नावमिवाम्भसि || BG2.67||
indriyāṇāṁ hi charatāṁ yan mano ’nuvidhīyate
tadasya harati prajñāṁ vāyur nāvam ivāmbhasi
Just as a
strong wind sweeps a boat off its chartered course on the water, even one of
the senses on which the mind focuses can lead the intellect astray.
इन्द्रियस्येन्द्रियस्यार्थे
रागद्वेषौ व्यवस्थितौ |
तयोर्न वशमागच्छेत्तौ ह्यस्य परिपन्थिनौ || BG3.34||
indriyasyendriyasyārthe rāga-dveṣhau vyavasthitau
tayor na vaśham āgachchhet tau hyasya paripanthinau
The senses
naturally experience attachment and aversion to the sense objects, but do not
be controlled by them, for they are way-layers and foes.
इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिरस्याधिष्ठानमुच्यते |
एतैर्विमोहयत्येष ज्ञानमावृत्य देहिनम् || BG3.40||
indriyāṇi mano buddhir asyādhiṣhṭhānam uchyate
etair vimohayatyeṣha jñānam āvṛitya dehinam
The senses,
mind, and intellect are said to be breeding grounds of desire. Through them, it
clouds one’s knowledge and deludes the embodied soul.
इन्द्रियाणि
पराण्याहुरिन्द्रियेभ्य: परं मन: |
मनसस्तु परा बुद्धिर्यो बुद्धे: परतस्तु स: || 42||
indriyāṇi parāṇyāhur indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ manaḥ
manasas tu parā buddhir yo buddheḥ paratas tu saḥ
The senses
are superior to the gross body, and superior to the senses is the mind. Beyond
the mind is the intellect, and even beyond the intellect is the soul.
