Anirvedo shriyo moolam, anirvedo param sukam I
Anirvedo hi satatam sarva artheshu pravarthaka : II
"Indefatigability is root of prosperity. Absence of despondency
constitutes greatest happiness. Self
reliance always impels one to pursue success in all matters."
This sloka is
from Sundara kanda of valmiki Ramayana. Having failed to discover Sita after
searching all over Lanka , Hanuman falls into quagmire of despair. But, on
second thought ,he deprecates despair as
self-defeating and, resorting to self-reliance ,resumes the search.
We have
Lakshmana’s words to enthuse Rama , who was in deep sorrow at the loss of Sita:
उत्साहो बलवानार्य नस्त्युत्साहात् परं बलं।
सोत्साहस्यहि लोकेषु न किञ्चिदपि दुर्लभं ॥
Utsaaho balavaanaarya naastyutsaahaat param balam
Sotsaahasya hi lokeshu na kinchidapi
durlabham.
Enthusiasm
has great strength. There is no greater
strength than enthusiasm. There is
nothing which is not attainable in this world for the enthusiastic.
Also, we
have the words of Angada, son of Vali ,
to his team members who are on the mission of finding the whereabouts of Sita. They were beginning to lose heart when, in
spite of extensive search, they could not
find Sita.
अनिर्वेदं च दाक्ष्यं च मनसश्चापराजयं कार्य्सिद्धिकराण्याहुः II
Anirvedam cha

Not getting
dejected or depressed, skill in doing one’s job and not losing heart in the face
of difficulties – these are the qualities which enable one to achieve one’s
goals.
We have in
thirukural a very beautiful verse 611 echoing the importance perseverance:
Arumai
udaithenru asaavaamai vendum;
Perumai
muyarchi tharum. Kural- 611
“Shun not a
task because it is tough;
perseverance
brings respect.” 611
