The story of the Black snake and king of frogs
yo yasya jāyate vadhyaḥ sa svapne'pi kathañcana |
na tat-samīpam abhyeti tat kim evaṃ prajalpasi || 4.21 ||
One who is a victim of another will never approach him even in dream ; it being so why are you blabbering like this?

sarva-nāśe ca sañjāte prāṇānām api saṃśaye |
api śatruṃ praṇamyāpi rakṣet prāṇāndhanāni ca || 4.22 ||
When one is faced with complete destruction, or when life is in danger, one should strive to protect his life and property, even if it means prostrating before the enemy.

yac chakyaṃ grasituṃ yasya grastaṃ pariṇamec ca yat |
hitaṃ ca pariṇāme yat tad ādyaṃ bhūtim icchatā || 4.23 ||
A man desirous of his welfare should eat what is good for him, which can be digested easily, and in the end beneficial to his health.

yo hi prāṇa-parikṣīṇaḥ sahāya-f parivarjitaḥ |
sa hi sarva-sukhopāyāṃ vṛttim āracayed budhaḥ || 4.24 ||
A wise man whose life blood is sapped, and who does not have any helpers, should contrive a way to obtain all round happiness and comfortable livelihood. ( The old snake thought to himself )

yo 'mitraṃ kurute mitraṃ vīryābhyadhikam ātmanaḥ |
sa karoti na sandehaḥ svayaṃ hi viṣa-bhakṣaṇam || 4.25 ||
One who makes friendship with an enemy who is stronger than himself, is as good as some one who takes poison knowingly; there is no doubt about it.

sarvasva-haraṇe yuktaṃ śatruṃ buddhi-yutā narāḥ |
toṣayanty alpa-dānena bāḍavaṃ sāgaro yathā || 4.26 ||
When the enemy is likely to grab one’s entire property, men of prudence readily part with a part of their property just like the sea offered to badavaagni.

yācyamāno
balīyasā yacchati naiva sāmnā |
prayacchate naiva ca darśyamānaṃ khārīṃ
sa cūrṇasya punar dadāti || 4.27 ||
A weak man when asked for a small portion of his property by a stronger person refuses to yield peacefully, ends up giving a far greater quantity later.

sarva-nāśe samutpanne ardhaṃ tyajati paṇḍitaḥ |
ardhena kurute kāryaṃ sarva-nāśo hi dustaraḥ || 4.28 ||
When everything is at stake the wiseman gives up half of it to save the other half; and he achieves his objectives with the other half; for the loss of the whole is difficult to bear.

na svalpasya kṛte bhūri nāśayen matimān naraḥ |
etad eva hi pāṇḍityaṃ yat svalpād bhūri-rakṣaṇam || 4.29 ||
Wise man should not engage himself in activities where he sacrifices much to achieve a little. True wisdom lies in achieving much at the cost of a little.

yathā hi malinair vastrair yatra tatropaviśyate |
evaṃ calita-vittas tu vitta-śeṣaṃ na rakṣati || 4.30 ||
Just as a man
wearing dirty clothes sits anywhere he likes, so a person who has lost
substantial part of his wealth does not bother much to protect what is
remaining.
