स बन्धुर् यो विपन्नानाम् आपद्-उद्धरण-क्षमः ।
न तु भीत-परित्राण-वस्तूपालम्भ-पण्डितः ॥ ३१ ॥
sa
bandhur yo vipannānām āpad-uddharaṇa-kṣamaḥ |
na tu bhīta-paritrāṇa-vastūpālambha-paṇḍitaḥ ||
1.31 ||
He is a friend of the
afflicted who protects them from calamities, and not one, who is an expert in condemning
a thing ill done or omitted to be done.
सदसि वाक्य-पटुता युधि विक्रमः ।
यशसि चाभिरुचिर् व्यसनं श्रुतौ
प्रकृति-सिद्धम् इदं हि महात्मनाम् ॥ ३२ ॥

dhairyam athābhyudaye kṣamā
sadasi
vākya-paṭutā yudhi vikramaḥ |
yaśasi
cābhirucir vyasanaṃ śrutau
prakṛti-siddham
idaṃ hi mahātmanām || 1.32 ||
Courage in trouble,
forbearance in prosperity, eloquence in the assembly, valour in battle,
eagerness in gaining fame, attention to the holy scriptures-–all these are
natural to great ones.
सम्पदि यस्य न हर्षो विपदि विषादो रणे च भीरुत्वम् ।
तं भुवन-त्रय-तिलकं जनयति जननी सुतं विरलम् ॥ ३३ ॥
sampadi
yasya na harṣo vipadi viṣādo raṇe ca bhīrutvam |
taṃ bhuvana-traya-tilakaṃ
janayati jananī sutaṃ viralam || 1.33 ||
A person who is not elated
by becoming rich, is not depressed while facing danger and never loses the
presence of mind while engaged in a battle (conflict) is adorned everywhere. Only an exceptional mother gives birth to such a child.
षड्-दोषाः पुरुषेणेह हातव्या भूतिम् इच्छता ।
निद्रा तन्द्रा भयं क्रोध आलस्यं दीर्घ-सूत्रता ॥ ३४ ॥
ṣaḍ-doṣāḥ
puruṣeṇeha hātavyā bhūtim icchatā |
nidrā tandrā
bhayaṃ krodha ālasyaṃ dīrgha-sūtratā || 1.34 ||
A man
wishing to prosper in this world, should leave six bad qualities - extra sleep,
lethargy, fear, anger, laziness and procrastination.
अल्पानाम् अपि वस्तूनां संहतिः कार्य-साधिका ।
तृणैर् गुणत्वम् आपन्नैर् बध्यन्ते मत्त-दन्तिनः ॥ ३५ ॥

api vastūnāṃ saṃhatiḥ kārya-sādhikā |
tṛṇair
guṇatvam āpannair badhyante matta-dantinaḥ || 1.35 ||
Even
individually weak objects when united helps to achieve great things. Just
as rope made up of straws can be used to bind a mad elephant.
संहतिः श्रेयसी पुंसां स्वकुलैर् अल्पकैर् अपि ।
तुषेणापि परित्यक्ता न प्ररोहन्ति तण्डुलाः ॥ ३६ ॥
saṃhatiḥ
śreyasī puṃsāṃ svakulair alpakair api |
tuṣeṇāpi
parityaktā na prarohanti taṇḍulāḥ || 1.36 ||
Success
comes to only those people who stick by their fellow beings even if they are
weak. A seed of rice cannot grow into a plant if it abandons the husk.
संहतास् तु हरन्त्य् एते मम जालं विहङ्गमाः ।
यदा तु निपतिष्यन्ति वशम् एष्यन्ति मे तदा ॥ ३७ ॥
saṃhatās
tu haranty ete mama jālaṃ vihaṅgamāḥ |
yadā tu
nipatiṣyanti vaśam eṣyanti me tadā || 1.37 ||
These birds, being
combined, are taking away my net; but soon they will fall down and will come in
to my control.
माता मित्रं पिता चेति स्वभावात् त्रितयं हितम् ।
कार्य-कारणतश् चान्ये भवन्ति हित-बुद्धयः ॥ ३८ ॥

mitraṃ pitā ceti svabhāvāt tritayaṃ hitam |
kārya-kāraṇataś
cānye bhavanti hita-buddhayaḥ || 1.38 ||
Mother, Father
and friends, these three are by nature are helpful to one. But, others who help
us are doing it for some selfish-motive.
