MOTHER- MAATAA -(माता,जननी)

सुताननेकान्विविधैर्पायैः क्रीडासु     संसज्य यथा हि माता ।

कार्येषु सक्ताऽपि तदार्तवाणीं   संश्रुत्य चायाति तथाहि चेशः ॥

sutAn anekAn vividhaiH upAyaiH krIDAsu   samsajya yathA hi mAtA।

kAryeShu saktA api tadArta vANIm   samshrutya cha ayAti tathA hi cha iishaH ॥

A mother may have left her kids to play by themselves after tricking them in various ways so that she can get some work done. But when one of them cries, she can hear it and will rush to console. Just like that God will rush to help his devotees when they are in trouble.

न अन्नोदकसमं दानं   न तिथि द्वादशीसमा।

न गायत्र्याः परो मन्त्रो   न मातु: परदैवतम्॥

Na annodaka samam daanam na tithi dvadasisamaa I

Na gayatrayaah paro mantro na matuh para daivatam II

Giving food and water is the highest charity, twelfth moon day is the most auspicious date, 'Gayatri Mantra' is the best among the 'Mantras' and mother is the highest God.

सत्यं माता पिता ज्ञानं  धर्मो भ्राता दया सखा।

शान्ति: पत्नी क्षमा पुत्र:   षडेते मम बान्धवा:॥

Truth is my mother, Knowledge is my father, Righteousness is my brother, Mercy is my friend, Peace is my wife and Forgiveness my son. These six are my kith and kin.

माता मित्रं पिता चेति स्वभावात् त्रतयं हितम् ।

कार्यकारणतश्चान्ये भवन्ति हितबुद्धयः ॥

Maataa mitram pitaa cheti svabhaavaat tratayam hitamI

Kaarya kaaranataschaanye bhavanti hitabuddayah II

Mother, Friend and Father - these three always do good to you. Any body else being nice to you is always for their own benefit.

माता च कमला देवी पिता देवो जनार्धनः I

बान्धवा विष्णु भक्ताश्च स्वदेशो भुवनत्रयं I Chanakya neeti

He who has his mother like the goddess Lakshmi,father like lord Vishnu and brothers and other relatives like devotees of Lord Vishnu ,the whole universe is his resting place.

यथा धेनुसहस्त्रेषु वत्सो विन्दति मातरम्।

तथा पूर्वकॄतं कर्म  कर्तारमनुगच्छत्॥

Yathaa dhenu sahastreshu vatso vindati maataram I

Tatha poorvakrutam karma kartaaram anugacchat II

A calf recognizes its mother among thousands of cows; similarly, previous deeds go with the doer.

मातॄवत्परदारेषु   परद्रव्येषु लोष्टवत्।

आत्मवत्सर्वभूतेषु   य: पश्यति स पश्यति॥

Maatruvat paradaareshu paradravyeshu loshtavatI

Aaatmavat sarva bhooteshu yah pasyati sa pasyati II

One who sees wives of others as mothers, sees money of others as dust, sees other living beings like himself, actually sees correctly.

माता यस्य गृहे नास्ति भार्या चाप्रियवादिनी।

 अरण्यं तेन गन्तव्यं यथारण्यं तथा गृहम् ॥

Maataa yasya gruhe naasti bhaaryaa cha priyavaadini I

Aranyam tena gantavyam yataaranyam tatha gruham II

In whose house there is no mother and the wife is not soft-spoken, what he will do by going to a jungle because as is the jungle so is the home for him. 

कन्या वरयते रूपं माता वित्तं पिता श्रुतम् ।

बांधवाः कुलमिच्छंति मिष्टान्नमितरे जनाः ॥

kanyA varayate rUpam mAtA vittaM pitA shrutam ।

bAndhavAH kulamicChanti miShTaannam itare janAH ॥

A girl looks for beauty in her match. Mother wants to make sure that he is wealthy. Father looks for education. Relatives will look for good family so that they can make new acquaintances. Others look for good meal with lots of sweets.

धैर्य यस्य पिता क्षमा च जननी शान्तिः चिरं गेहिणी

सत्यं सूनुः अयं दया च भागिनी भ्राता मनःसंयमः ।

शय्या भूमितलं दिशः अपि वसनं ज्ञानामृतं भोजनम्

एते यस्य कुटिम्बिनः वद् सखे कस्माद् भयं योगिनः ॥

Whose father is Courage, forgiveness is the mother, peace being the wife, truth being the son, compassion being sister, balance of mind being the brother - He who sleeps on the ground (does not crave for luxury), he for whom the directions are the clothes

 मातेव रक्षति पितेव हिते नियुक्ते

    कांतेव चाभिरम्यत्यपनीय खेदम् ।

कीर्तिं च दिक्षु विमलां वितनोति लक्ष्मीं

    किं किं न साधयति कल्पलतेव विद्या ॥

It protects you like a mother. It will show you the right path like a father. It will clear your fatigue and makes you happy like a wife. It will spread your fame in all directions. It will give you a lot of wealth. Education is like a magical creeper that will give you anything you wish.

मातृपितृसुतभ्रातृबंधुदारादिसंगमः ।

प्रपायामिव जंतूनां नद्यां काष्ठौघवच्चलः ॥ - गरुड पुराण

mAtRu pitRu suta bhrAtRu bandhu dArAdi sangamaH ।

prapAyAmiva jantUnAM nadyAM kAShThaughavat chalaH ॥

Mother, father, son, brother, friends, relatives, wife and other acquaintances – none of them are permanent. Our associations with them are as temporary as those between animals at a water hole, or logs of wood floating in the river. - Garuda Purana

मातृ   देवो  भव  पितृ  देवो  भव 

आचार्य  देवो  भव  अतिथि  देवो  भव  … (Taittiriya Upanishad)

maatru devo bhava pitru devo bhava

aachaarya devo bhava atithi devo bhava … (Taittiriya Upanishad)

Respects to Mother, Father, Guru and Guest. They are all forms of God.
