SHINE-SHOBHA- (शोभा)

SUBHASHITHANI:167
गुरुणा शोभते शिष्य: शिष्येणापि गुरुस्तथा।
उभाभ्यां शोभते शाला शालया शोभते पुरम्।।
The disciple shines due to the grace of the teacher; the teacher is glorified by the qualities of the student; The institute shines because of both of them; A city gains prominence because of great institutions. 
रूपयौवनसम्पन्ना विशालकुलसम्भवाः।
 विद्याहीना न शोभन्ते निर्गन्धा इव किंशुकाः ॥Chanakya niti
rūpayauvanasampannā viśālakulasambhavāḥ
vidyāhīnā na śobhante nirgandhāḥ kiṃśukā yathā॥ 03-08
Though men be endowed with beauty and youth and born in noble families, yet without education they are like the Palasa flower which is void of sweet fragrance.
एकेन राजहंसेन या शोभा सरसो भवेत्
सा बक सहस्रेण परितस्तीरवासिना
ekena rAjahaMsena yA shobhA saraso bhavet |
na sA baka sahasreNa paritastIravAsinA ||
Whatever beauty accrues to the water sources such as a river or a lake due to the presence of a single swan, does not accrue to that water source due to the presence of a thousand cranes.
सुंदरोऽपि सुशीलोऽपि कुलीनोऽपि महाधनः
शोभते विना विद्यां विद्या सर्वस्य भूषणम्
sundaraH api sushIlaH api kulInaH api mahAdhanaH ।
shobhate na vinA vidyAm vidyA sarvasya bhUShaNam ॥
One may be handsome, with good character, born to a good family and have lot of wealth - yet one cannot shine without good education. Education is the best ornament that any one can have.
वरं दरिद्रः श्रुतिशास्त्रपारगो न चापि मूर्खो बहुरत्नसंयुतः ।
सुलोचना जीर्णपटापि शोभते न नेत्रहीना कनकैरलङ्कृता ॥
Varam daridrah shrutishaastra paarago na chaapi moorko bahuratna samyutah I
Sulochanaa jeernapataapi shobate na netraheenaa kanakairalankrutaa II
A man well versed in scriptures is better even if he is poor than a fool adorned with costly jewels. A man with lovely eyes shines better than a blind man decorated with golden ornaments. ( * sloka should not be misunderstood as being insensitive to challenged persons ) 
सर्वत्र देशे गुणवान् शोभते प्रथितः नरः
मणिः शीर्षे गले बाहौ यत्र कुत्र मपि शोभते..
Sarvatra deshe gunawaan shobhate prathitah narah.
manih sheershe gale baahou yatra kutra mapi shobhate.

A knowledgeable and virtuous person becomes a celebrity and is adored  in all Countries, just as a precious stone worn over head, neck,arms and even anywhere on the body looks beautiful and  is adored.
कुसुमं वर्णसंपन्नंगन्धहीनं शोभते
शोभते क्रियाहीनं मधुरं वचनं तथा
Kusumam varnasampannam gandhheenam na shobhate.
Na shobhate kriyaa heenam madhuram vachanam tathaa.
A flower having bright colours but without any sweet smell is not adored. Similarly only pleasing talk (mere  promises) without being backed by any action is not considered great.
माता शत्रुः पिता वैरी, येन बालो पाठितः
शोभते सभामध्ये, हंसमध्ये बको यथा -२९
mAtA shatruH pitA vairI, yena bAlo na pAThitaH |
na shobhate sabhAmadhye, haMsamadhye bako yathA ||
The parent who does not facilitate and guide their child for studies is like the greatest enemy of the child. The presence of an uneducated person in the company of educated people is like a goose in the company of swans.]
समाने शोभते प्रीती राज्ञि सेवा च शोभते।
वाणिज्यं व्यवहारेषु स्त्री दिव्या शोभते गृहे ॥Chanakya neeti
Samaane shobhate preetih raagyi sevaa cha shobhate.

Vaanijyam vyavahaareshu  divyaa stree  shobhate gruhe.
Friendship between equals flourishes, service under a king is respectable, it is good to be business-minded in public dealings, and a handsome lady is safe in her own home.
पुस्तकं प्रत्याधीतं नाधीतं गुरुसन्निधौ
सभामध्ये शोभन्ते जारगर्भा इव स्त्रियः ।। Chankaya neeti
Pustakam pratyaadheetam naadheetam gurusannidau I
Sabhaa madye na shobhante jaaragarbha iva striyah II
He who tries to get knowledge only by reading books and not through the grace of a guru deserves the position in society due only to a woman pregnant through illicit relationship.
मणिः शाणोल्लीढः समरविजयी हेतिदलितो
मदक्षीणो नागः शरदि सरितः श्यानपुलिनाः
कलाशेषश्चन्द्रः सुरतमृदिता बालवनिता

तन्निम्ना शोभन्ते गलितविभवाश्चार्थिषु नराः Niti satakam
A well chiselled gem, a wounded victor, an elephant languid after rut, a slender river during the autumn, the narrow crescent of the waning moon, a young maiden fatigued after love, and men whose wealth has dwindled because of alms giving ; shine by their reduced state ( tenuity ).  
दूरतः शोभते मूर्खो लम्बशाटपटावृतः
तावच्च शोभते मूर्खो यावत्किञ्चिन्न भाषते
duurataH shobhate muurkho lambashaaTapaTaavRRitaH
taavachcha shobhate muurkho yaavatkiJNchinna bhaaShate
Wearing expensive dresses a fool looks like a scholar from a distance. But, when he opens his mouth his ignorance comes out.
