JEALOUSY,ENVY-ASOOYAA,MATSARAH,EERSHUH-असूया, मत्सरः,ईर्षुः ।

SUBHASHITHANI:211
MATSARYA... The sense that others have it and I don’t have it is jealousy. Finding it intolerable that others are as happy as oneself, Matsarya makes one miserable; over other's good fortune.  Only I should have all things  is the feeling of Matsarya (The last of the six enemies-Shad ripu ) .Duryodhana was an epitome of maatsarya.
(Matsarya - envy, jealousy, vanity, and pride , असूया , ईर्षुः and मत्सरः are synonymous)

Those who have not won over the ‘six enemies of the mind ‘ viz Lust, anger, greed, pride, delusion, and jealousy can never obtain peace of mind.
यदृच्छालाभसन्तुष्टो द्वन्द्वातीतो विमत्सरः ।
समः सिद्धावसिद्धौच कृत्वापि न निबध्यते ॥ (BG 4.22)
One who is satisfied with what comes unasked for, who has transcended the dualities, who is free from envy and is equi-poised under success and failure  he is not bound even by performing actions.

Yah eershuh  paravitteshu roope vaapi kulaanwaye
Sukha soubhaagya satkaare tasya vyaadhiranantakah
One who envies others’ wealth, beauty, family reputation, noble birth, happiness, fortune or respect in society  is really a sick person.  For him there is no cure.

The scholarship of the arrogant which smothers others’ excellence is like pouring 'dirt of jealousy' on themselves, similar to the elephant pouring mud on itself after a bath.

Birth is invaded by death,  youth which is fleeting as the lightning by agedness (senility), contentment by greed for wealth, tranquility by the flirtations of women, good qualities by jealous persons, forests by snakes, kings by evil men and abundance of riches by instability.  There is nothing in this world which is not adversely affected by something or other.

Vidya (Learning personified) came to the Brahamana (Teacher) and said, “I am your treasure. Protect me. Do not give me to some one whose tendency is to find fault even in good things. (asooyaa  = doshaaropo guneshwapi – Amarakosam) . This way I will become more potent.  Give me to one who, you know, is pure in body and mind,  has control over his senses,  is of a sattwic temperament, who will guard me as a treasure and who is always alert and careful

The old age snatches away the beauty, lust takes away the courage, death defeats the life, jealousy  will destroy ones noble attitude (dharmic vyavahaar), anger will lead to poverty, being in the company of bad people and helping them will take away ones 'sheela-bhava', uncontrolled desire will take away the shyness and false pride will take away all the good things!
