SHADRIPU OR THE SIX ENEMIES-

SUBHASHITHANI:210
In the practice of “Sanaatana Dharma”  we experience what is called  Ari shadvarga or Shadripu (Sanskrit: षड्रिपु meaning the six enemies) six enemies of the mind. The six enemies are : kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (attachment), Mada (pride), and matsarya (jealousy); the negative characteristics of which prevent man from attaining spiritual upliftment. In this blog we will see some 'subhashithani'  on various  aspects of the ‘shad ripu’.

Yaksha
Which is the invincible enemy?
What constitutes an eternal malady?
Yudhishtira
Anger(Krodha) is the invincible enemy
Greed(Lobha) is an incurable disease
Yaksha
What is understood by delusion, O king?
What is self-pride?
Yudhishtira
Not knowing dharma leads to delusion(Moha).
Pride(Maanaa/Darpah) is the arrogance of being someone

Who is a fool? What is regarded as desire?
What is said to be jealousy?

Desire is that which arises from samsara
Grief of the heart is known as jealousy(Maatsaryam)
( Above mentioned slokas are from Yaksha prasna -Maha bharatha )

.
Unbridled desire, anger and greed stay like thieves in the body and mind  of all human beings in this world and cloud their entire world (destroy their power of discriminating between  right and wrong…). Therefore,  beware and wake up, wake up from this stupor.

The Supreme Lord said: It is lust alone, which is born of contact with the mode of passion, and later transformed into anger. Know this as the sinful, all-devouring enemy in the world.

Na jatu kamah kamanam  upabhogena shamyati ।
Havisha krushnavartmeva  bhuya  eva abhivardhate ॥  mahabharatha
Lust, wanton or greed will not be conquered by satisfying it. It is like trying to douse a fire by adding ghee to it.

While contemplating on the objects of the senses, one develops attachment to them. Attachment leads to desire, and from desire arises anger.2.62
Anger leads to clouding of judgment, which results in bewilderment of the memory. When the memory is bewildered, the intellect gets destroyed; and when the intellect is destroyed, one is ruined.2.63
( Mahatma Gandhiji used to read slokas on  'sthitha pragya lakshna' practically every             day. The above mentioned two slokas are a part of it )

Anger(Krodha) is the root cause of mental distress. Anger is the reason for bondage with this world. Anger reduces righteousness, hence give up anger.
Anger is said to be the difficult enemy to conquer and greed is said to be the endless disease. A saint is one who seeks welfare of all others and a wicked is one who has no compassion for others.
Greed(Lobha) is the root cause of all sins and troubles. Greed gives rise to enmity and excess greed leads to disaster.

lobhah sadaa vichintyo labdhebhyah sarvato bhayam druShTam l
kaaryakaaryanavichaaro lobhavimoodhasya naastyeva ll

Greed in men is always a cause of worry and is questionable, because  if a person is seized by greed ,he loses the power to discriminate between good deeds and bad (prohibited) ones and is subject to fear all around him. Greedy persons do not hesitate even to indulge in crimes with a view of acquiring more wealth, with very disastrous consequences.

A moth falls in fire not knowing its burning power; the fish gets caught for food in baited hook in ignorance; and here we, despite aware of complex dangers of sensual pleasures, do not renounce them. Oh! how profound is the power of delusion (Moha )! 18
Conquest of ego(madam) is wealth, overcoming lust is happiness, confidence is friendship,self-control is manhood.

Neither anger nor jealousy( Maatsaryam), neither avarice nor unholy thoughts taint the minds of the true devotees of Purusottama, who have to their credit many a virtuous deed.

O Hanuman! please deign to accept this hymn composed by your servant
with pleasure. Please destroy the six (internal) enemies that are
hard to be won over by me. Please extricate me from the mire known as
rebirth. Please save me, save me! Hanumat Pancha chamaram
