HITAM-हितं-BENEFICIAL, GOOD, WELFARE

 SUBHASHITHANI:355

भगवन् किमुपादेयं? गुवचनं हेयमपिचकिम्? अकार्यं।
 कॊ गुरुरधिगततत्त्वः शिष्यहितायोद्यतस्सततम् ॥Prasnottara ratna maalikaa
Bhagavan kimupaadeyam?  guruvachanam heyamapicha kim? akaaryam
Ko gururadhigata tathwah?  shishyahitaayodyatah satatam 
Q:  What is to be accepted without reservation?
A:  The words of the guru.
Q:  What is to be given up?
A:  Action which is against dharma
Q:  Who is  guru?
A:  One who has realized the Truth  and has the good of the disciple always in his heart.
 

धर्मार्थं यतताम् अपीह विपदो देवाद् यदि स्युः क्वचित्
तत् तासाम् उपशांतये सुमतिभिः कार्यो विशेषान् नयः।
लोके ख्यातिम् उपागतात्र सकले लोकोक्तिर् एषा यतो
दग्धानां किल वह्निना हित-करः सेकोऽपि तस्योद्भवः॥Pancha tantra 1.402

If in some cases misfortunes should overtake men striving to do their duty , as bad luck would have it, then talented should stick to their duty all the more for the common saying is well known that a hot lotion is beneficial to those burnt by fire.

சுடச்சுடரும் பொன்போல் ஒளிவிடும் துன்பஞ்
சுடச்சுட நோற்கிற் பவர்க்கு. -Thirkkural 267

The hotter glows the fining fire, the gold the brighter shines;
The pain of penitence, like fire, the soul of man refines.

प्रजासुखे सुखम् राज्ञः प्रजानाम् तु हिते हितम्. Kautilya

Prajaa- sukhe sukham raagyah prajaanaam tu hite hitam I

The happiness of the people is the happiness of the king; Their success is the success of the king. His taxes should be reasonable. He should take good care of all of his subjects.

सत्यस्य वचनं श्रेयसत्यादपि हितंवदेत् 
यद्भूतहितमत्यन्तं ऐतत् सत्यं मतं मम 
satyasya vachanam shreyah satyaadapi hitamvadet I
yadbhootahitamatyantam aitat satyam matam mama  II Narada
Speaking the truth is elevating. Pleasant words are better. Truth is that which is beneficial to all living beings.
हितवक्ता मृदुवक्ता विमृश्य वक्ता चापि बहुवक्ता I
ऋत वक्ता  गुण वक्ता स्मितवक्ता दुर्लभ: पुरुषः  II
Hitavaktaa mruduvaktaa vimrusysvaktaa na cha api bahuvaktaa I
Rutavaktaa gunavaktaa smitavaktaa durlabhah purushah II
He who speaks beneficially, pleasantly, sparingly, truthfully, discerningly, and gently is rare indeed.
मनीषिणः सन्ति  ते हितैषिणो
हितैषिणः सन्ति  ते मनीषिणः 
सुहृच्च विद्वानपि दुर्लभो नृणां
यथौषधं स्वादु हितं  दुर्लभम् 
maniishinah santi na te hitaishino  
hitaishinah santi na te maniishinah |
suhrcca vidvaanapi durlabho nrnaam 
 yathaushadham svadu hitam ca durlabham ||

There are wise men. But they are not my well wishers. There are a lot of well wishers. But they are not wise. It is difficult in this world to find a person who is both wise and a well wisher - just like it is hard to find a medicine that efficacious and also tastes good.

माता मित्रं पिता चेति स्वभावात् त्रतयं हितम्
कार्यकारणतश्चान्ये भवन्ति हितबुद्धयः - Panchatantra

Maataa mitram pitaa cheti svabhavaat tritayam hitam I
Kaarya kaaranatascha anye bhavanti hita buddhayah II
 Mother, friend and father - these are the only three people who will help you by nature. All other become well-wishers only to serve their own purpose. 

परो अपि हितवान् बन्धु: ,बन्धु: अपि अहित: पर: | 
अहित: देहज: व्याधि: , हितम् आरण्यम् औषधम् || Hitopadesa
Paropi itavaan banduh banduh api ahitah parah I
Aitah dehajah vyaadhih hitam aaranyam aushadham II

The person with whom we have no relation, but who helps us in our difficult times is our Real relative. Just like a disease which is in our own body does so much harm to us while the medicinal plant which grows in forest far off does so much of good to us. 

प्रीणाति यः सुचरितैः पितरं पुत्रो
यद्भर्तुरेव हितमिच्छति तत्कलत्रम्
तन्मित्रमापदि सुखे समक्रियं यद्
एतत् त्रयं जगति पुण्यकृतो लभन्ते
॥Niti satakam

prINAti yaH sucharitaiH pitaraM sa putro
yadbhartureva hitamichChati tatkalatram |
tanmitramApadi sukhe cha samakriyaM yad
etat trayaM jagati puNyakRuto labhante ||

He is a son who pleases his father with good actions; that is a wife who wishes unmixed good to her husband; that is a friend who acts the same in adversity as in happy times. The meritorious (alone) secure this triad in this world.

यच्छक्यं ग्रसितुं ग्रासं ग्रस्तं च परिणामि यत् I
हितं च परिणामे यत् तद् आध्यं भूतिमिच्छता II
Yachchakyam grasitum graasam grastam parinaami yat I
Hitam cha parinaame yat tad aadhyam bhutimichchataa II

One who is after prosperity should eat what he can chew , and chew what he can digest and digest only that which is beneficial to him.

सुनीतम् हित कामेन वाक्यम् उक्तम् दश आनन || 
 गृह्णन्ति अकृत आत्मानः कालस्य वशमागताः |Ramayana- 6.16.20

Those who have an ill composed mind and who get conceded to the occasion do not assimilate the words of prudence, spoken by a well-wisher."

रोचते ते वचनम् निशा चर |
परीत काला हि गत आयुषो नरा |
हितम् गृह्णन्ति सुहृद्भिर् ईरितम् || Ramayana-6.16.8

"O, Ravana the ranger of the night! My words are not relishing to you, who are being restrained by me duly desiring your welfare. Persons whose duration of life is to end, do not accept the salutary words spoken by their well-wishers"- Vibheeshana to Ravana
