PANCHA TANTRA-MITRA BHEDAA-35

 SUBHASHITHANI:359

The story of the blue jackal

Yad yeva bhavet loke karma jihvaa pratushtidam I
Tanna bhrutyo bhavet kaschit kasyachit vasago athavaa II 278

If action in this world will not contribute to the pleasure of the tongue then no one will be serving some one else or under any one’s control.

yad asatyamvadena matyor yad vāsevyamcha sevate |
yad gacchati videshamcha tat sarvam udararthah
 || 279||

A man speaks a lie, or serves a fool, or goes abroad to work, only for the sake of his stomach.

Svabhavo na upadeshena  shakyate kartumanyathaa I
Sutaptamapi paaneyam unar gachchati sheetataam  II280

It is not possible to change a person’s habits by advising him. Just like water becomes hot when you heat it... But always returns to normal temperature in time.

Yadi syaat sheetalo vahnih shetaamshur dahnaatmakah I
Na svabhavo atra martyaanaam shakyate kartumanyathaa II281

Even though fire were to be cool and the cool-rayed moon burning by nature, it would still not be possible to change the nature of beings.

Tyaktvaascha abhyantaraa yena baahyaascha abhyantareekrutaah I
Sa eva mrutyum apnoti yatha raajaa kakudrrumah II282

One who discards one’s own kinsmen and admits to one’s presence strangers certainly suffers death as did the king Kakudruma.

Vajralepasya moorkhasy naareenaam karkatasya cha I
Eko grahastu meenaanaam nelamadyapayor yathaa II283
(Note: I am not sure of the meaning of this sloka, so I am not providing any translation. Any body who can help with the meaning of this sloka , I would be thankful. )

Na yasya cheshtitam vidhyaanna kulam na parakramam I
Na tasya visvaset praagyo yadeechchet sriyam atmaanah II284

A person who desires his own welfare and prosperity, should never believe  a person whose nature, actions and strength are not known.

Te dhanyaste vivekagyaaste Sbhyaa iha bhootale I

Aagachchanti gruhe yesham kaaryaatham sahado janaah II285

Those are really blessed, those who are men of discrimination, those are really cultured, whose houses are visited by friends on business wishing to have their objects accomplished.

sampattayaḥ parāyattāḥ sadā cittam anirvṛtam |
sva-jīvite’py aviśvāsas teṣāṃ ye rāja-sevakāḥ || 286 ||

Those who serve kings have their wealth at another’s disposal; their mind is always ill at ease; and they have no surety of their own lives.
