PANCHA TANTRA-MITRA BHEDAA-33

 SUBHASHIHANI:357

Damanaka( the fox) goes to Pingala( lion king )  and starts planting seeds of disaffection to separate the two good friends.

When a king gives all his power to just one central authority, pride takes possession of him on account of being drunk with power; through pride he gets dissatisfied with a state of servitude; disgust drives him to a desire for independence; it further leads to a stage where he seeks the life of the king.

na so ‘sti puruṣo rājñāṃ yo na kāmayate śriyam |

a sarvatra narendraṃ paryupāsate || 264 ||

There is not one servant who does not desire to be a king. It is only due to their lack of ability and might, that they continue to serve.

aneka-doṣa-duṣṭasya kāyaḥ kasya na vallabhaḥ |
kurvann api vyalīkāni yaḥ priyaḥ priya eva saḥ || 265 ||

In spite of being affected with many distempers, ailments or diseases, who does not love their own body? Although acting disagreeably or doing wrongs, a beloved person is ever a beloved person.

akulīnaḥ kulīno vā sa śriyā bhājanaṃ naraḥ || 266 ||
The person on whom a king shows some special favours ,whether low-born or of noble descent , the same becomes the receptacle of respect and wealth.
ukto bhavati yaḥ pūrvaṃ guṇavān iti saṃsadi |
tasya doṣo na vaktavyaḥ pratijñā-bhaṅga-bhīruṇā || 267 ||
Having praised him In an assembly, his fault should not be mentioned by one afraid of belying one’s own solemn declaration.

itaḥ sa daityaḥ prāpta-śrīr neta evārhati kṣayam |
viṣa-vṛkṣo 'pi saṃvardhya svayaṃ chettum asāmpratam || 268 ||
He ought not to be destroyed by me ; for it is not proper for one to cut down a poisonous tree after having reared it up oneself.

ādau na vā praṇayināṃ praṇayo vidheyo

datto ‘thavā pratidinaṃ paripoṣaṇīyaḥ |
utkṣipya yat kṣipati tat prakaroti lajjāṃ

bhūmau sthitasya patanād bhayam eva nāsti || 269 ||

One should avoid being affectionate in the first place. If affection occurs by chance, then it should only increase with time. The person who shows a lot of affection, and then suddenly stops, is a mean person. And so, instead of stopping being affectionate, one should avoid it altogether. A person who is already on the ground, has not fear of falling.
