भुक्त्वा तृणानि शुष्कानि पीत्वा तोयं जलाशयात् ।
दुग्धं ददति लोकेभ्यः गावो विश्वस्य मातरः ।।
Bhuktvā
tṛṇāni śuṣkāni pītvā toyaṃ jalāśayāt ।
Dugdhaṃ
dadati lokebhyaḥ gāvo lokasya mātaraḥ ॥
After
eating dry grass and drinking water from the stream, cows give milk to people.
They truly, are like mothers to the world.
एकवर्णं यथा दुग्धं भिन्न्वर्णासु धेनुषु ।
तथैव धर्मवैचित्र्यं तत्त्वमेकं परं स्मृतम् ॥ महाभारत-
Ekavarnam yatha dugdham bhinnavarnasu
dheneshu ।
Tathaiva dharmavaichitryam tattvamekam param smrutam ॥
As
cows of different colours produce milk of the same colour, similarly, different religions instruct about the one ultimate reality.
तृणात्सन्जायते क्षीरं क्षीरात्सन्जायते विषम् ll
paatraapaatravivekosti dhenu pannagayoryathaa l
Difference between a deserving and non-deserving person is like the difference between a cow and a snake. While the cow will give you milk when you feed her grass, the snake gives venom when you feed with milk.
कामधेनुगुणा विद्या ह्ययकाले फलदायिनी।प्रवासे मातृसदृशा विद्या गुप्तं धनं स्मृतम्॥kāmadhenugunā vidyā hyakāle phaladāyinī।pravāse
mātṛsadṛśī vidyā guptaṃ dhanaṃ smṛtamLearning
is like a cow of desire. It, like her, yields in all seasons. Like a mother, it
feeds you on your journey. Therefore learning is a hidden treasure.यथा धेनुसहस्त्रेषु वत्सो विन्दति मातरम् |
तथा पूर्वकॄतं कर्म कर्तारमनुगच्छति || - महाभारत

Vatso Vindati Maataram
Tathaa Poorva Kratam Karma Kartaaram anugachhati
Calf recognises its mother among the herd of thousands of cows;
the same way, karma of previous birth (good and bad deeds) goes with the doer.
क्रोधो वैवस्वतो राजा तॄष्णा वैतरणी नदी |
विद्या कामदुघा धेनु: सन्तोषो नन्दनं वनम् || शुक्रनीति
krodho vaivasvato raajaa
truShNaa vaitaraNee nadee
vidyaa kaamadudhaa dhenuh
santoSho nandanam vanam II shukraneeti
Anger is the King of Death
(Yama), greed (desire) is the river VaitaraNI (in the Hell). (However)Knowledge
is (like) the cow which fulfills all wishes (Kamdhenu), (and) bliss is the
paradise.
सर्वोपनिषदो गावः दोग्धा गोपालनन्दनः ।
पार्थो वत्सः सुधीर्भोक्ता दुग्धं गीतामृतं महत्

parthovatsa: sudheerbhoktha dugdham gitamrutam mahat
If All
upanishads are likened to cows. The
milker is the son of the cowherd, Krishna; Arjuna, son of prutha, is the calf;
the men of purified intellect are the drinkers and the milk is the supreme nectar
of Gita.
परोपकाराय फलन्ति वृक्षाः परॊपकाराय वहन्ति नद्यः |
परॊपकाराय दुहन्ति गावः परॊपकारार्थम् इदं शरीरम् ||
Paropakaaraya
phalanti vrukshaah, parokaaraya vahanti nadhyaah I
Paropakaaraya
duhanti gaavah, paropakaaraartham idam sareeram II
Trees
give fruits for others to eat, Rivers flow for others to use, cows give milk
for the sake of others and this body should be used to help others.रविश्चन्द्रो घना
वृक्षा नदी गावश्च सज्जनाः ।
एते परोपकाराय युगे दैवेन निर्मिता ॥
Ravischandro gana vruksha nadee gaavascha sajjanaah I
Ete paropakaaraaya yuge daivena nirmitaa II
The sun, the moon, the clouds, trees, rivers, cows, and good men- all
these were created by the gods specifically to help others.
