PEACE-सन्धिः-SANDHIH-18(Hitopadesa)

  SUBHASHITHANI:610

jalāntaś candra-capalaṃ jīvitaṃ khalu dehinām |
tathā-vidham iti jñātvā śaśvat-kalyāṇam ācaret || 4.136 ||

Life of human beings is like the trembling of the moon in water; knowing the truth in this way one should always follow the path of virtue.

vātābhra-vibhramam idaṃ vasudhādhipatyam

āpāta-mātra-madhuro viṣayopabhogaḥ |
prāṇās tṛṇāgra-jala-bindu-samāna-lolā

dharmaḥ sakhā param aho paraloka-yāne || 4.137 ||

The rulership of the kingdom is like the cloud blown by the wind, enjoyment of objects in the world are of the nature of diminishing returns, the life breath is fickle like a water droplet sticking to a grass, it is only Dharma which accompanies as a friend in the journey to the other world.

mṛga-tṛṣṇā-samaṃ vīkṣya saṃsāraṃ kṣaṇa-bhaṅguram |
sajjanaiḥ saṅgataṃ kuryād dharmāya ca sukhāya ca || 4.138 ||

Realising that life in this world is transient like the mirage, one should associate  with good men for the sake of virtue and happiness.

aśvamedha-sahasraṃ ca satyaṃ ca tulayā dhṛtam |
aśvamedha-sahasrād dhi satyam eva viśiṣyate || 4.139 ||

Thousand ashwamedha sacrifices and truth were to be weighed in a balance Satya would be found weightier.

sandhiḥ sarva-mahī-bhujāṃ vijayinām astu pramodaḥ sadā

santaḥ santu nirāpadaḥ sukṛtināṃ kīrtiś ciraṃ vardhatām |
nīti-vāra-vilāsinīva satataṃ vakṣaḥ-sthale saṃsthitā

vaktraṃ cumbatu mantriṇām aharahar bhūyān mahān utsavaḥ || 4.140 ||

Let peace be ever for the delight of victorious kings; may the good be free of misfortunes; may the glory of those who engage in performing good deeds increase; may polity, like a harlot, abiding in the minds of ministers, ever kiss their mouths ; may every day be a great festival.

prāleyādreḥ sutāyāḥ praṇaya-nivasatiś candramauliḥ sa yāvad

yāval lakṣmīr murārer jalada iva taḍin mānase visphurantī |
yāvat svarṇācalo 'yaṃ dava-dahana-samo yasya sūryaḥ sphuliṅgas

tāvan nārāyaṇena pracaratu racitaḥ saṅgraho 'yaṃ kathānām || 4.141 ||

As long as the loving presence of daughter of snow clad mountain continues, as long as moon-crested Siva lives, as long as Lakshmi stays brightly in the heart of Murari like the flashing lightning in the clouds, and as long as the golden mountain, Meru which looks like wild fire, and whose spark is the sun; let this collection of stories written by Narayana,  be so long in circulation in this world.

Thus concludes Narayana's Hitopadesa.

SRI KRISHNAYA THUBHYAM NAMAH
