ज्ञान-लव-दुर्विदग्धं ब्रह्मापि नरं न रञ्जयति ॥ १०७ ॥
ajñaḥ sukham ārādhyaḥ sukhataram ārādhyate viśeṣajñaḥ |
jñāna-lava-durvidagdhaṃ brahmāpi naraṃ na rañjayati || 4.107 ||
It is easy to please a relatively ignorant person, It is not at all difficult to convince an expert; But even the Creator himself will find it impossible to satisfy a person who is vainly proud of his little knowledge..
कर्मानुमेयाः सर्वत्र परोक्ष-गुण-वृत्तयः ।
तस्मात् परोक्ष-वृत्तीनां फलैः कर्म विभावयेत् ॥ १०८ ॥
karmānumeyāḥ
sarvatra parokṣa-guṇa-vṛttayaḥ |
tasmāt parokṣa-vṛttīnāṃ phalaiḥ karma vibhāvayet || 4.108 ||
The virtue and conduct of
a person who is out of sight , on all occasions should estimated by his works; therefore
those who are out of sight should be judged based on their results.
सरसि बहुशस् ताराच्छायेक्षणात् परिवञ्चितः
कुमुद-विटपान्वेषी हंसो निशास्वविचक्षणः ।
न दशति पुनस् ताराशङ्की दिवापि सितोत्पलं
कुहुक-चकितो लोकः सत्येऽप्य् अपायम् अपेक्षते ॥ १०९ ॥
sarasi
bahuśas tārācchāyekṣaṇāt parivañcitaḥ
kumuda-viṭapānveṣī
haṃso niśāsvavicakṣaṇaḥ |
na daśati punas tārāśaṅkī divāpi sitotpalaṃ
kuhuka-cakito
lokaḥ satye'py apāyam apekṣate || 4.109 ||
A swan looking for
lotus-spouts at night, in a lake with manifold
reflections of stars, was deceived temporarily; again even during day time will
not nibble at the white lotus, suspecting it to be a star; a man once alarmed by
a deception suspects evil even in truth.
दुर्जन-दूषित-मनसः सुजनेष्व् अपि नास्ति विश्वासः ।
बालः पायस-दग्धो दध्य् अपि फूत्कृत्य भक्षयति ॥ ११० ॥
durjana-dūṣita-manasaḥ
sujaneṣv api nāsti viśvāsaḥ |
bālaḥ pāyasa-dagdho dadhy api phūtkṛtya bhakṣayati || 4.110 ||
A mind spoiled by the
wicked , he loses confidence even in good men; a child who burnt his tongue
taking hot payasam, eats curd after cooling it with his breath.
लुब्धम् अर्थेन गृह्णीयात् स्तब्धम् अञ्जलि-कर्मणा ।
मूर्खं छन्दानुरोधेन याथातथ्येन पण्डितम् ॥ १११ ॥
lubdham arthena gṛhṇīyāt
stabdham añjali-karmaṇā |
mūrkhaṃ chandānurodhena
yāthātathyena paṇḍitam || 4.111 ||
It is
advisable to gratify a covetous person by money, a stern person by humility, an
ignorant by fulfilment of his desires and a wise person by speaking truth.
सद्-भावेन हरेन् मित्रं सम्भ्रमेण तु बान्धवान् ।
स्त्री-भृत्यौ दान-मानाभ्यां दाक्षिण्येनेतरान् जनान् ॥ ११२ ॥
sad-bhāvena
haren mitraṃ sambhrameṇa tu bāndhavān |
strī-bhṛtyau
dāna-mānābhyāṃ dākṣiṇyenetarān janān || 4.112 ||
One should win a friend by
good nature, a relative by courtesy, women and servants by gifts and honours;
other people by courteous behaviour.
बलीयसाभियुक्तस् तु नृपो नान्य-प्रतिक्रियः ।
आपन्नः सन्धिम् अन्विच्छेत् कुर्वाणः काल-यापनम् ॥ ११३ ॥
balīyasābhiyuktas
tu nṛpo nānya-pratikriyaḥ |
āpannaḥ sandhim anvicchet kurvāṇaḥ kāla-yāpanam || 4.113 ||
A king in difficulty,
attacked by a stronger enemy, having no other help, should desire peace, causing
procrastination.
The next three slokas should be read together-
कपाल उपहारश् च सन्तानः संगतस् तथा ।
उपन्यासः प्रतीकारः संयोगः पुरुषान्तरः ॥ ११४ ॥
kapāla
upahāraś ca santānaḥ saṃgatas tathā |
upanyāsaḥ pratīkāraḥ saṃyogaḥ puruṣāntaraḥ || 4.114 ||
अदृष्ट-नर आदिष्ट अत्मौमिष्ट उपग्रहः ।
परिक्रयस् तथोच्छिन्नस् तथा च परभूषणः ॥ ११५ ॥
adṛṣṭa-nara ādiṣṭa
ātmāmiṣa upagrahaḥ |
parikrayas tathocchinnas tathā
ca para-bhuṣaṇaḥ || 4.115 ||
स्कन्धोपनेयः सन्धिश् च षोडशः परकीर्तितः ।
इति षोडशकं प्राहुः सन्धिं सन्धि-विचक्षणाः ॥ ११६ ॥
skandhopaneyaḥ
sandhiś ca ṣoḍaśaḥ parakīrtitaḥ |
iti ṣoḍaśakaṃ prāhuḥ sandhiṃ sandhi-vicakṣaṇāḥ || 4.116 ||
Kapala, Upahara, Samtana,
Upanyasa, Pratikara, Samyoga, Purshantara,Adhrushtanara, Aadhishta, Atmaumishta,
Upagraha, Parikriya, Ucchinna, Parabhushanah,Sandhopaneya- These sixteen are
enumerated as the varieties of peace. Thus, those experts in alliances declare
peace to be sixteen-fold.
