अङ्गणवेदी वसुधा कुल्या जलधिः स्थली च पातालम् ।
वाल्मिकः च सुमेरुः कृतप्रतिज्ञस्य धीरस्य ॥

To a person of firm conviction the vast earth is like a courtyard , the ocean a small pond , the netherworld (Patala) like a picnic spot and mount Meru like ant hill.

Happiness
and sorrow, prosperity and poverty, gain and loss, these visit all by turns.
Therefore the brave should neither rejoice or bewail.

The gold is identified by burning in fire, nobility is known by one’s action, a virtuous man
is known by his conduct . A hero is known in danger, the valiant in difficulty, and friends
and foes in dire calamities .

The wise
who always see self only, are neither pleased nor get angry whether they are
feted or tormented.॥3.9॥
सुदुर्बलं नावजानाति

युक्तो रिपुं सेवते बुद्धिपूर्वम् ।
न विग्रहं रोचयते बलस्थैः काले
च यो विक्रमते स धीरः ॥ – viduraneeti

पराञ्चि खानि व्यतृणत्स्वयम्भूस्तस्मात्पराङ्पश्यति नान्तरात्मन् ।
कश्चिद्धीरः प्रत्यगात्मानमैक्षदावृत्तचक्शुरमृतत्वमिच्छन् ॥ १ ॥

The self-existent ( svayambhu) created the senses out-going: therefore, one sees outside and not the âtman within. Some intelligent man, with his senses turned away, (from their object), desirous of immortality, sees the âtman within.

Gathering up the wise
sayings and the noble deeds of the great , scattered here and there one should
remain persevering like sadhus who live by picking grains left over in the
field after the harvest(uncha vrutti).
रथः शरीरं पुरुषस्य राजन्
आत्मा नियन्तेन्द्रियाण्यस्य चाश्वाः I
तैरप्रमत्तः कुशली सदश्वैर्दान्तैः
सुखं याति रथीव धीरः IIVidura niti

This body is the chariot, buddhi (intellect) is the charioteer and
the senses are the horses. One who controls all these travels happily in this
world like the charioteer who has controlled the horses of the chariot.
एते बहुविधा शोका
विलापरुदिते तथा।
वर्जनीया हि धीरेण सर्वावस्थासु धीमता।। Ramayana - 2.105.39।।
A wise man, holding on to his fortitude in all circumstances, should
avoid such occasions of grief, these words of lamentation and this crying.
