PANCHA TANTRA- SUBHASHITHANI-6

 SUBHASHITHANI:320

जातस्य नदीतीरे तस्यापि तृणस्य जन्मसाफल्यम्
यत्सलिलमज्जनाकुलजनहस्तालम्बनं भवति २९॥

jātasya nadī-tīre tasyāpi tṛṇasya janma-sāphalyam |
yat salila-majjanākula-jana-hastālambanaṃ bhavati || 29 ||

Even the grass growing on the river bank attains the fulfilment of its birth ,as it serves as support to the hands of persons in danger of being drowned in water.

स्तिमितोन्नतसञ्चारा जनसन्तापहारिणः
जायन्ते विरला लोके जलदा इव सज्जनाः ३०॥

stimitonnata-sañcārā jana-santāpa-hāriṇaḥ |
 jāyante viralā loke jaladā iva sajjanāḥ || 30 ||

Rarely born in this world good men who move on steadily and loftily and who remove the affliction of men, as are clouds which drift on slowly aloft and remove difficulties of the people.

निरतिशयं गरिमाणं तेन जनन्याः स्मरन्ति विद्वांसः
यत्कमपि वहति गर्भं महतामपि यो गुरुर्भवति ३१॥

niratiśayaṃ garimāṇaṃ tena jananyāḥ smaranti vidvāṃsaḥ |h
yat kam api vahati garbhaṃ mahatām api yo gurur bhavati || 31 ||

Learned men assert the greatness of a mother to be unsurpassed in that she chances to conceive a foetus which when born becomes an object of veneration even to the great.

अप्रकटीकृतशक्तिः शक्तोऽपि जनस्तिरस्क्रियां लभते
निवसन्नन्तर्दारुणि लङ्घ्यो वह्निर्न तु ज्वलितः ३२॥

aprakaṭīkṛta-śaktiḥ śakto 'pi janas tiraskriyāṃ labhate |
nivasann antar-dāruṇi laṅghyo vahnir na tu jvalitaḥ || 32 ||

A man who does not manifest his prowess suffers indignities , although strong; for fire when latent in wood can be touched but not when ablaze.

अपृष्टोऽत्राप्रधानो यो ब्रूते राज्ञः पुरः कुधीः
केवलमसंमानं लभते विडम्बनम् ३३॥

apṛṣṭo 'trāpradhāno yo brūte rājñaḥ puraḥ kudhīḥ |
na kevalam asaṃmānaṃ labhate ca viḍambanam || 33 ||
That foolish man who, not being chief, speaks unasked before a king ,meets not only with 
disrespect but contempt.

वचस्तत्र प्रयोक्तव्यं यत्रोक्तं लभते फलम्
स्थायी भवति चात्यन्तं रागः शुक्लपटे यथा ३४॥

vacas tatra prayoktavyaṃ yatroktaṃ labhate phalam |
sthāyī bhavati cātyantaṃ rāgaḥ śukla-paṭe yathā || 34 ||
A speech should be addressed  there where  when spoken there will be proper response;  just as a dye takes a firm hold on a white garment.

அறனறிந்து ஆன்றமைந்த சொல்லான்எஞ் ஞான்றுந்
திறனறிந்தான் தேர்ச்சித் துணை.-Thirukkural635

The man who knows virtue , has use of wise and pleasant words, with plans apt for every occasion ; he is the best counsellor for a king.

अप्रधानः प्रधानः स्यात्सेवते यदि पार्थिवम्
प्रधानोऽप्यप्रधानः स्याद्यदि सेवाविवर्जितः ३५

apradhānaḥ pradhānaḥ syāt sevate yadi pārthivam |
pradhāno 'py apradhānaḥ syād yadi sevā-vivarjitaḥ || 35 ||

If a man serves the king well, then even one who has lost his position, will regain his post. If one does not serve the king properly even the one one holding the post may lose it.

आसन्नमेव नृपतिर्भजते मनुष्यं
           विद्याविहीनमकुलीनमसंस्कृतं वा
प्रायेण भूमिपतयः प्रमदा लताश्च
           यत्पार्श्वतो भवति तत्परिवेष्टयन्ति ३६॥

āsannam eva nṛpatir bhajate manuṣyaṃ

vidyā-vihīnam akulīnam asaṃskṛtaṃ vā |
prāyeṇa bhūmi-patayaḥ pramadā latāś ca

 yat pārśvato bhavati tat pariveṣṭayanti || 36 ||

A king attaches himself to that man alone who is near him( in close attendance) , although he may be uneducated, not born in a noble family, or uncultured; as a general rule kings, women, and creepers cling to what is in immediate proximity.
