PANCHA TANTRA- SUBHASHITHANI-3

 SUBHASHITHANI:317

IMPORTANCE OF ACQUISITION OF WEALTH

pūjyate yad apūjyo 'pi yad agamyo 'pi gamyate |
vandyate yad avandyo 'pi sa prabhāvo dhanasya ca || 7 ||
Even a man not worthy of worship gets worshipped; even a man who should not be sought after gets sought after;even a man unworthy gets saluted.Such is the influence of wealth.
Nothing exists save wealth, that can
Change man of nought to worthy man.

aśanād indriyāṇīva syuḥ kāryāṇy akhilāny api |
etasmāt kāraṇād vittaṃ sarva-sādhanam ucyate || 8 ||
Like the senses gain vigour to perform all actions on eating, all actions ( business of various kind) depend on wealth; for this reason wealth is extolled as the means for accomplishing every thing.
arthārthī jīva-loko 'yaṃ śmaśānam api sevate |
tyaktvā janayitāraṃ svaṃ niḥsvaṃ yacchati dūrataḥ || 9 ||
A man of this world hankering after wealth,resorts even to a cemetery; and leaving one's poor parents even goes far to distant climes.
gata-vayasām api puṃsāṃ yeṣām arthā bhavanti te taruṇāḥ |
arthe tu ye hīnā vṛddhās te yauvane'pi syuḥ || 10 ||
The aged men become youth if they have wealth.The youth are indeed old if they do not own wealth.
This wealth can be attained by men through six means :
Begging, serving the king, agriculture, by acquiring knowledge, usury-lending money at interest, the profession of a merchant-trading. Among all these the money acquired by trading is considered as honourably acquired.

kṛtā bhikṣānekair vitarati nṛpo nocitam aho

 kṛṣiḥ kliṣṭā vidyā guru-vinaya-vṛttyātiviṣamā |
kusīdād dāridryaṃ parakaragata-granthi-śamanān

na manye vāṇijyāt kim api paramaṃ vartanam iha || 11 ||

Begging as a profession is considered mean , as it is practised by vile characters; a king does not reward service adequately; husbandry entails a great deal of labour - stands in danger of being ruined by want of rain; the acquisition of knowledge is extremely difficult because one has to be polite to the gurus; The lending business ends one in poverty , because even the original money given as loan to another never comes back; I therefore think there is no mode of earning one's livelihood superior to trading.

upāyānāṃ ca sarveṣām upāyaḥ paṇya-saṃgrahaḥ |
dhanārthaṃ śasyate he ekas tad-anyaḥ saṃśayātmakaḥ || 12 ||
Of all the means of acquiring wealth the storing up of merchandise is the best for the production of wealth; any other than that is of a doubtful nature.

payānāṃ gāndhika paya kim anyai kāñcanādibhi |
yatraikena ca yat kr
īta tac chatena pradīyate || 13 ||
Among all saleable products , perfume is the best,even gold and other things are not comparable to it. One becomes hundred , when perfume is bought and sold.
