The first treatise (
Mitra Bheda ) features a true friendship between a lion and a bull in a forest.
A jackal named Damanaka, and his friend named Karataka , conspire to break up friendships of the lion king. A series of fables describe the
conspiracies and causes that lead to close and inseparable friends breaking up.
वर्धमानो महान् स्नेहः सिंहगोवृषयोर्वने ।
पिशुनेनातिलुब्धेन जम्बुकेन विनाशितः ॥१.१॥
vardhamāno mahān snehaḥ siṃha-go-vṛṣayor vane |
piśunenātilubdhena jambukena vināśitaḥ || 1.1 II

The increasing true friendship between the lion and the bull in the forest was destroyed by a deceitful greedy fox.
In the southern region, there is a city named 'Mahilaaropya'.There lived a merchant's son , named Vardhamaanaka,who had made a huge fortune by honest means.One night he started musing - Even if one is rich ,one should think of means to enhance it and do what ever is necessary.
IMPORTANCE OF WEALTH
नहि तद्विद्यते किञ्चिद्यदर्थेन न सिध्यति।
यत्नेन मतिमांस्तस्मादर्थमेकं प्रसाधयेत् ॥ १.२॥
यत्नेन मतिमांस्तस्मादर्थमेकं प्रसाधयेत् ॥ १.२॥
yatnena matimāṃs tasmād artham ekaṃ prasādhayet ||1.2||
There is nothing that is not possible to attain through wealth. So, an intelligent man should only strive to earn wealth.
यस्यार्थास्तस्य
मित्राणि यस्यार्थास्तस्य बान्धवाः ।
यस्यार्थाः स पुमाꣳल्लोके यस्यार्थाः स च पण्डितः ॥ ३॥
yasyāryas tasya mitrāṇi yasyārthās tasya bāndhavāḥ |
yasyārthāḥ sa pumāṃ loke yasyārthāḥ sa ca paṇḍitaḥ || 1.3 ||
यस्यार्थाः स पुमाꣳल्लोके यस्यार्थाः स च पण्डितः ॥ ३॥
yasyāryas tasya mitrāṇi yasyārthās tasya bāndhavāḥ |
yasyārthāḥ sa pumāṃ loke yasyārthāḥ sa ca paṇḍitaḥ || 1.3 ||
He who has wealth has friends;he has relatives;he is well-respected in the world; he is a learned man.
न सा विद्या न तद्दानं न तच्छिल्पं न सा कला ।
न तत्स्थैर्यं हि धनिनां याचकैर्यन्न गीयते ॥ ४॥
na sā vidyā na tad dānaṃ na tac chilpaṃ na sā kalā |
na tat sthairyaṃ hi dhanināṃ yācakair yan na gīyate || 1.4 ||

There is not the kind of knowledge,no charity, no skill, no art, and no firmness which is not sung of (as possessed by) wealthy by supplicants.
इह
लोके हि धनिनां परोऽपि स्वजनायते ।
स्वजनोऽपि दरिद्राणां सर्वदा दुर्जनायते ॥ ५॥
Iha loke hi dhanināṃ paro 'pi svajanāyate |
svajano 'pi daridrāṇāṃ sarvadā durjanāyate ||1. 5 ||

In this world, even a stranger acts as a relative towards the rich; where as even a relative acts wickedly towards a poor man.
अर्थेभ्योऽपि हि वृद्धेभ्यः संवृत्तेभ्यस्तस्ततः ।
प्रवर्तन्ते क्रियाः सर्वाः पर्वतेभ्य इवापगाः ॥ ६॥
arthebhyo 'pi hi vṛddhebhyaḥ saṃvṛttebhya itas tataḥ |
pravartante kriyāḥ sarvāḥ parvatebhya ivāpagāḥ || 1.6 ||
प्रवर्तन्ते क्रियाः सर्वाः पर्वतेभ्य इवापगाः ॥ ६॥

When wealth is accumulated from various sources, and when it keeps increasing abundantly, then all works get accomplished effortlessly ,like the rivers flowing down from the mountain.
