Mind
is like a mad elephant - it runs in every direction . Intellect is like
the hook used by the mahout to control and steady the elephant. We must use our
wisdom to control our minds.
உரனென்னும் தோட்டியான் ஓரைந்தும் காப்பான்
வரனென்னும் வைப்பிற்கோர் வித்து.
Thirukkural-24
The man whose firm will controls his
five senses even as the goading hook (ankusam) controls the elephant; he is a
seed fit for the fields of heaven.

The fever of worry
snatches away hunger, sleep, strength, beauty, enthusiasm, intellect,
wealth and life itself - there is no doubt.

A wise man will not
give his daughter in marriage to these people - some living very far away, an
uneducated person, a man who is only interested in seeking salvation, a madly
courageous person or a poor person. While they may not have any glaring
shortcomings the chances of long lasting happy married life is less with each
of the above grooms.
भवन्ति बहवो मूर्ख़ाः क्वचिदेको विशुद्धधीः |

There are many a
fools in this world. But there are very few people who can be called wise. Only
those who can keep their minds from wavering in spite of attacks from the
foolish are real wise people.

प्रमिमीतेऽनुभवादृतेऽल्पधीः || Sishupala vadaa
A wise man can
foretell the problems that may come in his way. If he misses it, then he will
at least listen when others tell him about the troubles he is going to face.
But an idiot will neither see it himself, not listen to people who warn him
about it. He comes to know about it only when he will experiences it (and
unprepared).

It increases
desires. It accompanies madness. It does not let you see your own mistakes. It
makes you take up risky adventures. It makes you yearn for a care-free
existence. It forces you to go away from the right path. It controls your
wisdom even though are intelligent. Such is the effect of youth on a person.

From history we have
learnt that gambling begets enmity of great proportions. Hence a wise man will
not indulge in gambling - not even for fun.

Perseverance, daring, courage, wisdom,
strength and valour. Where these six are present, Devatas Gods will also be present.
