GLORIES OF SUBHASHITHANI

 SUBHASHIHANI:337

manusmruti

viṣādapyamṛtaṃ grāhyaṃ bālādapi subhāṣitam |
amitrādapi sadvṛttamamedhyādapi kāñcanam || 239 ||

Nectar may be taken even from poison, good advice even from a child; good conduct (may be learnt) even from a foe; and gold (may be taken) even from an impure source.—(239)

Ekavidyaapradhanopi bahugyaanee bhavennarah.
Subhashitaani shikshet yaani shastroddhrutaani cha.

 Even a person expert in only one discipline of learning can acquire knowledge of other disciplines of learning, if he studies the Subhashitas embodying (quoting) the wisdom
and essence of other disciplines of learning.

Drakshaa mlaanamkhee jaataa sarkaraa cha ashmataam gataa I
Subhashitha rasam drushtvaa sudhaa bheetaadivam gataan II

Looking at the flavour of subhashitas (good Sanskrit quotes),
grape turned pale, sugar turned into crystals and Amrita [elixir of life] ran away to svarga.

Niti satakam
Boddharo matsaragrastah prabhavah smayadushitah
Abodhopahatashchanye jirnamange subhashitam

Men of learning are seized with jealousy, men of wealth are defiled by pride, and the rest are lost in ignorance. Let words of wisdom( subhashithani) for want of appreciation get choked with in my limbs.

Among languages, the most important, the sweetest, the most divine is Sanskrit (गीर्वाणभारती). Even more than that a poem is sweet and further than that is a Wise saying (सुभाषितम्).

Subhashita rasaasvaadah sajjanaih saha sangatih I
Sevaa vivekibhoopasya dukhanirmoolanam trayam II
Enjoying the sweetness of wise sayings, association with good men, and working for an intelligent king, these three will root out sorrow completely.

Shraddadhaanah shubhaam vidyaam aadadeeta avaraadapi
 Antyajaadapi param dharmam stree ratnam dushkulaadapi
 Striyo ratnaanyatho vidyaa dharmah shaucham subhaashitam
 Vividhaani cha shilpaani samaadeyaani sarvatah

Auspicious knowledge shall be received with humble respect even from one who is inferior in age or status.  Virtues shall be imbibed even from one who is of an inferior social status.  A gem of a woman who is virtuous shall be accepted even if she comes from an infamous clan.

Women, diamonds, knowledge, virtue, physical and mental purity, wise sayings and different arts and skills shall be gathered and accepted whatever their source

In this world there are three gems - water, food and wise sayings. Fools are those who search for gems among stones.

||

A person, who's mind is not won over or swayed   by listening to a 'Subhashita' or a melodious song or by the elegance and beauty of young women, is surely either a Yogi or like an animal.

The tree of 'samsAra' (World Process), though poisonous, bears two sweet fruits: Nectar like  subhAShitas and company of saintly persons.
