Slokas from the story of "the unfaithful wife of a weaver"

वैकल्यं धरणी-पातम् अयथोचित-जल्पनम्
संनिपातस्य चिह्नानि मद्यं सर्वाणि दर्शयेत् १८८

vaikalyaṃ dharaṇī-pātam ayathocita-jalpanam |
saṃnipātasya cihnāni madyaṃ sarvāṇi darśayet || 188 ||

Liquor produces all these symptoms in a person : imperfect stance, falling on the ground, and blabbering non sense; these are usually seen at the time death also.


कर-स्पन्दो ऽम्बर-त्यागस् तेजो-हानिः सरागता
वारुणी-सङ्गजावस्था भानुनाप्य् अनुभूयते १८९

kara-spando ‘mbara-tyāgas tejo-hāniḥ sarāgatā |
vāruṇī-saṅgajāvasthā bhānunāpy anubhūyate || 189 ||

Just as the mighty sun, as it cross the sky to the west, starts leaving the sky, and it’s rays become hazy, and it acquires a reddish hue, so does a man who has liquor – his clothes start to fall away, his hands tremble and his face becomes flushed.

विषम-स्थ-स्वादु-फल-ग्रहण-व्यवसाय-निश्चयो येषाम्
उष्ट्राणाम् इव तेषां मन्येऽहं शंसितं जन्म १९०

viṣama-stha-svādu-phala-grahaṇa-vyavasāya-niścayo yeṣām |
uṣṭrāṇām iva teṣāṃ manye’haṃ śaṃsitaṃ janma || 190 ||

Their birth is praiseworthy, who tend to pluck a tasty fruit in a thorny plant,  much like the camel in a desert

सन्दिग्धे पर-लोके जनापवादे जगति बहु-चित्रे
स्वाधीने पर-रमणे धन्यास् तारुण्य-फल-भाजः १९१

sandigdhe para-loke janāpavāde ca jagati bahu-citre |
svādhīne para-ramaṇe dhanyās tāruṇya-phala-bhājaḥ || 191 ||

What happens after death is a matter of doubt. Ridicule of the  world is varied and common. If another man is undercontrol  ,that indeed is  the worthy fruit of youth.

यदि भवति देव-योगात् पुमान् विरूपो ऽपि बन्धको रहसि
तु कृच्छ्राद् अपि भद्रं निज-कान्तं सा भजत्य् एव १९२

yadi bhavati deva-yogāt pumān virūpo ‘pi bandhako rahasi |
na tu kṛcchrād api bhadraṃ nija-kāntaṃ sā bhajaty eva || 192 ||

An unfaithful woman enjoys the company of even an ugly person met by chance, but doesn’t enjoy the company of a spouse that has been attained after much difficulty.

आदित्यचन्द्रावनिलोऽनलश्च द्यौर्भूमिरापो हृदयं यमश्च
अहश्च रात्रिश्च उभे सन्ध्ये धर्मश्च जानाति नरस्य वृत्तम्

Aadithya chandraa anilo analascha
dhyour bhoomi aapo hrudayam yamascha I
Ahascha raathrischa ubecha sandhye
 dharmascha jaanaathi narasya vruttham II 193

The sun, the moon, the winds, the fire, the earth, the sky, the waters, the heart, the lord of death, the day, the night, the two twilights and Dharma – They all know and are witness to the actions of man, and his character.

शम्बरस्य  या माया या माया नमुचेर् अपि 
बलेः कुम्भीनसश् चैव सर्वास् ता योषितो विदुः  १९४ 

śambarasya ca yā māyā yā māyā namucer api |
baleḥ kumbhīnasaś caiva sarvās tā yoṣito viduḥ || 194 ||

These women know all the deceitful tricks known to demons like Shambara, Namuchi, Bali and Kumbhinasa!

 हसन्तं प्रहसन्त्य् एता रुदन्तं प्ररुदन्त्य् अपि
अप्रियं प्रिय-वाक्यैश् गृह्णन्ति काल-योगतः १९५

hasantaṃ prahasanty etā rudantaṃ prarudanty api |
apriyaṃ priya-vākyaiś ca gṛhṇanti kāla-yogataḥ || 195 ||

They laugh along with men who laugh; they cry along with men who cry; they calm down a man who is angry, with their pleasing words, and this is how they trap unsuspecting men.

उशना वेद यच् छास्त्रं यच् वेद बृहस्पतिः
स्त्री-बुद्ध्या विशिष्येते ताः स्म रक्ष्याः कथं नरैः १९६

uśanā veda yac chāstraṃ yac ca veda bṛhaspatiḥ |
strī-buddhyā na viśiṣyete tāḥ sma rakṣyāḥ kathaṃ naraiḥ || 196 ||

All the deceitful tricks which were known to  Sukhracharya  and Brihaspati , are also known to women. In such a situation, how can they be controlled?
