PANCHA TANTRA-MITRA BHEDAA-24

 SUBHASHITHANI:343

Devaśharman, who had witnessed this entire scene ( The infidelity of the weaver's wife and smart acting of the barber's wife in conniving with her friend ) in front of his eyes, thought to himself…

nātiprasaṅgaḥ pramadāsu kāryo necched

balaṃ strīṣu vivardhamānam |
atiprasaktaiḥ puruṣair yatas tāḥ

krīḍanti kākair iva lūna-pakṣaiḥ || 198 ||

One should not get excessively attached to a woman.. One should also not disregard the increasing dominance of women. Because, women play with the men who show too much interest in them, much like children play with crows shorn of their wings..

 सुमुखेन वदन्ति वगुना प्रहरन्त्य् एव शितेन चेतसा
मधु तिष्ठति वाचि योषितां हृदये हालाहलं महद्-विषम् १९९

sumukhena vadanti valgunā praharanty eva śitena cetasā |
madhu tiṣṭhati vāci yoṣitāṃ hṛdaye hālāhalaṃ mahad-viṣam || 199 ||

With a sweet tongue they talk charmingly but strike with a cold heart; honey in a woman’s words but filled with poison in her chest.

अत एव निपीयतेऽधरो हृदयं मुष्टिभिर् एव ताड्यते
पुरुषैः सुख-लेश-वञ्चितैर् मधु-लुब्धैः कमलं यथालिभिः २००

ata eva nipīyate'dharo hṛdayaṃ muṣṭibhir eva tāḍyate |
puruṣaiḥ sukha-leśa-vañcitair madhu-lubdhaiḥ kamalaṃ yathālibhiḥ || 200 ||

Hence it is that the nectar of their lips is drunk , while their heart is beaten with closed fists by men deluded by a particle of happiness , as is a lotus by bees attracted by its honey.

आवर्तः संशयानाम् अविनय-भवनं पत्तनं साहसानां

By whom is this machine in the form of woman resembling poison mixed  with nectar , created in this world for the destruction of virtue? It is a whirlpool of risks, an abode of acts of immodesty, the residence of adventurous deeds, e meeting place faults, a dwelling for hundreds of frauds, the birth place of mistrusts, which is difficult to be comprehended even by able  and eminent men and which is the repository of all kinds deceitful tricks.

 ( The qualities mentioned herein although bad in themselves ,constitute beauty when existing in the limbs of a woman’s body. Similar sentiments have been expressed by Thiru valluvar in Kamattu pal and Bhartruhari in Sringara satakam )

“A bosom hard is praised, a forehead low,
A fickle glance, a mumbling speech and slow,
Thick hips, a heart that constant tremors move,
A natural twist in hair, and twist in love ,
Their virtues are a pack of vices, Then
Let beasts adore the fawn-eyed things, not men.” -Translation by A.W.Ryder
