THE STORY OF THE UNFORGIVING MONKEY
yad-arthaṃ bhrātaraḥ putrā
api vāñchanti ye nijāḥ |
vadhaḥ rājya-kṛtāṃ rājñāṃ tad
rājyaṃ dūratas tyajet || 5.67 ||
For the sake of kingdom
even own brothers and sons can kill the king; so it is better not to desire a
kingdom or become its ruler.
anāgatavatīṃ
cintām asambhāvyāṃ karoti yaḥ |
sa eva pāṇḍuraḥ śete soma-śarma-pitā yathā || 5.68 ||
Thinking about what has so
far not happened, and that whose happening is impossible, he becomes pale and
sleeps, just like the father of Soma Sharma.
yo
laulyāt kurute naivodarkam avekṣate |
viḍambanām avāpnoti sa yathā candra-bhūpatiḥ || 5.69 ||
He who is overwhelmed by greed and doesn’t
weigh its consequences,
Will become a victim of deceit like King Chandra in this story."
meṣeṇa
sūpakārāṇāṃ kalaho yatra jāyate |
sa bhaviṣyaty asandigdhaṃ vānarāṇāṃ kṣayāvahaḥ || 5.70 ||
Where a quarrel between
sheep and cooks is started, it means in the near future the destruction of the entire monkeys is
threatened without any doubt.
tasmāt
syāt kalaho yatra gṛhe nityam akāraṇaḥ |
tad-gṛhaṃ jīvitaṃ vāñchan dūrataḥ parivarjayet || 5.71 ||
If quarrels take place every
day with out any reason in a house, those who want peaceful life had better
move away from such a house.
kalahāntāni
harmyāṇi kuvākyāntaṃ ca sauhṛdam |
kurājāntāni rāṣṭrāṇi kukarmāntaṃ yaśo nṛṇām || 5.72 ||
Quarrels end a happy home,
bad words separate friends, evil kings bring ruin to their kingdom and meanness
destroys fame of men.
vadanaṃ
daśanair hīnaṃ lālā sravati nityaśaḥ |
na matiḥ sphurati kvāpi bāle vṛddhe viśeṣataḥ || 5.73 ||
Those who have lost their
teeth saliva leaks all the time; there is no spark from the brain, some times
in young boys more so in the case of elderly.
mitraṃ
vyasana-samprāptaṃ sva-sthānaṃ para-pīḍanam |
dhanyās te ye na paśyanti deśa-bhaṅgaṃ kula-kṣayam || 5.74 ||
Those who do not have to
see, their friend in trouble, their place occupied by enemies, ruin of the
kingdom, and destruction of the family, are really blessed.
kapīnāṃ
medasā doṣo vahni-dāha-samudbhavā |
aśvānāṃ nāśam abhyeti tamaḥ sūryodaye yathā || 5.75 ||
The pain due to burns
sustained by horses will very soon be gone, like darkness before dawn, by using
monkey’s fat liberally.
marṣayed
dharṣaṇāṃ yo 'tra vaṃśajāṃ para-nirmitām |
bhayād vā yadi vā kāmāt sa jñeyaḥ puruṣādhamaḥ ||5.76 ||
Who ever puts up with
tolerance outrages against his own relatives, be it from fear or greed he
should be considered as meanest of men that lives.
