लज्जा स्नेहः स्वर-मधुरता बुद्धयो यौवन-श्रीः
कान्तासङ्गः स्वजन-ममता दुःख-हानिर् विलासः ।
धर्मः शास्त्रं सुर-गुरु-मतिः शौचम् आचार-चिन्ता
पूर्णे सर्वे जठर-पिठरे प्राणिनां सम्भवन्ति ॥ ९१ ॥
lajjā
snehaḥ svara-madhuratā buddhayo yauvana-śrīḥ
kāntāsaṅgaḥ
svajana-mamatā duḥkha-hānir vilāsaḥ |
dharmaḥ
śāstraṃ sura-guru-matiḥ śaucam ācāra-cintā
pūrṇe
sarve jaṭhara-piṭhare prāṇināṃ sambhavanti || 5.91 ||
Modesty, friendship, sweet
voice, discretion, youthfulness, passion, relationship with kinsmen, absence of
pain, sports, knowledge of shastras, wisdom like Bruhaspati, purity, following
moral codes- all these are valued by men only when the pot in the form of belly
is full ( ie there is no trace of hunger).
अन्धो वा वधिरो वाथ कुष्टी वाप्य् अन्त्यजो ऽपि वा ।
परिगृह्णातु तां कन्यां स-लक्षां स्याद् विदेशगः ॥ ९२ ॥
andho vā
vadhiro vātha kuṣṭī vāpy antyajo 'pi vā |
parigṛhṇātu tāṃ kanyāṃ sa-lakṣāṃ syād videśagaḥ || 5.92 ||
Whether he be blind or deaf,
leper or out-cast, let him accept the girl with one lakh gold coins; but he
will have to leave the country.
यदि स्याच् छ्री-तलो वह्निश् चन्द्रमा दहनात्मकः ।
सुस्वादः सागरः स्त्रीणां तत्-सतीस् त्वं प्रजायते ॥ ९३ ॥
yadi
syāc chrī-talo vahniś candramā dahanātmakaḥ |
susvādaḥ sāgaraḥ strīṇāṃ tat-satīs tvaṃ prajāyate || 5.93 ||
When fire becomes cool,
the moon rays are burning hot, sea water becomes potable then only a woman can
be chaste.
एकोदराः पृथग् ग्रीवा अन्यान्य-फल-भक्षिणः ।
असंहता विनश्यन्ति भारुण्डा इव पक्षिणः ॥ ९४ ॥
ekodarāḥ
pṛthag grīvā anyānya-phala-bhakṣiṇaḥ |
asaṃhatā vinaśyanti bhāruṇḍā iva pakṣiṇaḥ || 5.94 ||
With one belly and two heads the Bharundaa bird died because each head wanted to eat a different fruit. In the same way if people are disunited it will lead to disaster.
अपि कापुरुषो मार्गे द्वितीयः क्षेम-कारकः ।
api kāpuruṣo mārge dvitīyaḥ kṣema-kārakaḥ |
karkaṭena dvitīyena jīvitaṃ parirakṣitam || 5.96 ||
क्षीणः श्रयति शशी रविम् ऋद्धो वर्धयति पयसां नाथम् ।
अन्ये विपदि सहाया धनिनां श्रियम् अनुभवन्त्य् अन्ये ॥ ९७ ॥
kṣīṇaḥ
śrayati śaśī ravim ṛddho vardhayati payasāṃ nātham |
anye vipadi sahāyā dhanināṃ śriyam anubhavanty anye || 5.97 ||
The waning moon takes
shelter with the sun, but the waxing moon forgets the sun and plays with the
ocean. Someone helps when in trouble, someone else enjoys the benefit.
मन्त्रे तीर्थे द्विजे देवे दैवज्ञे भेषजे गुरौ ।
यादृशी भावना यस्य सिद्धिर् भवति तादृशी ॥ ९८ ॥
mantre
tīrthe dvije deve daivajñe bheṣaje gurau |
yādṛśī bhāvanā yasya siddhir bhavati tādṛśī || 5.98 ||
The usefulness of mantras, pilgrimages, brāhmaṇas (knower
of brahman), deities, seekers/knowers of God, doctors, and teachers will
be proportional to the faith we put in them.
अपरीक्ष्य न कर्तव्यं कर्तव्यं सुपरीक्षितम् ।
पश्चाद् भवति सन्तापो ब्राह्मणी नकुलं यथा ॥ १७ ॥
aparīkṣya na kartavyaṃ kartavyaṃ
suparīkṣitam |
paścād bhavati santāpo brāhmaṇī nakulaṃ
yathā ||5. 17 ||
Do not indulge in activities without proper investigation, act only
based on careful examination; else it would lead to remorse afterwards, as with
lady and mongoose.
Thus ends panchantantra book five aparekshita kaarakam अपरीक्षितकारकं – Ill considered action.
