STORY OF MANTHARA THE WEAVER
राजा दान-परो नित्यम् इह कीर्तिम् अवाप्य च ।
तत् प्रभावात् पुनः स्वर्गं स्पर्धते त्रिदशैः सह ॥ ५९ ॥
rājā
dāna-paro nityam iha kīrtim avāpya ca |
tat prabhāvāt punaḥ svargaṃ spardhate tridaśaiḥ saha || 5.59 ||
A king who is always
generous in his life will attain fame in this world, and also by its power
rivals devas in swarga.
भोजनाच्छादने दद्याद् ऋतु-काले च सङ्गमम् ।
भूषणाद्यं च नारीणां न ताभिर् मन्त्रयेत् सुधीः ॥ ६० ॥
bhojanācchādane dadyād
ṛtu-kāle ca saṅgamam |
bhūṣaṇādyaṃ ca nārīṇāṃ na
tābhir mantrayet sudhīḥ || 5.60 ||
One should give food and
dresses to a woman and union at the right time. Give her ornaments and other
nice things but never ask her advice.
यत्र स्त्री यत्र कितवो बालो यत्र प्रशासिता ।
तद् गृहं क्षयम् आयाति भार्गवो हीदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ६१ ॥
yatra
strī yatra kitavo bālo yatra praśāsitā |
tad gṛhaṃ kṣayam āyāti bhārgavo hīdam abravīt || 5.61 ||
Where a woman, or a child,
or a gambler is the master of the house, sage Bhargava declares that
house stage by stage is in for ruin.
तावत् स्यात् सुप्रसन्नास्यस् तावद् गुरु-जने रतः ।
पुरुषो योषितां यावन् न शृणोति वचो रहः ॥ ६२ ॥
tāvat syāt suprasannāsyas
tāvad guru-jane rataḥ |
puruṣo yoṣitāṃ yāvan na śṛṇoti
vaco rahaḥ || 5. 62 II
So long as a man does not listen to a woman’s advice he will be cheerful and is attached to his elders.
एताः स्वार्थ-परा नार्यः केवलं स्व-सुखे रताः ।
न तासां वल्लभः को ऽपि सुतो ऽपि स्व-सुखं विना ॥ ६३ ॥
etāḥ
svārtha-parā nāryaḥ kevalaṃ sva-sukhe ratāḥ |
na tāsāṃ vallabhaḥ ko 'pi suto 'pi sva-sukhaṃ vinā || 5.63 ||
These women constantly
thinking about their own interest, are for ever concerned only about their
happiness; no one is their favourite, not even their son, unless he contributes
to her happiness.
चारणैर् वन्दिभिर् नीचैर् नापितैर् बालकैर् अपि ।
न मन्त्रं मैत्मान् कुर्यात् सार्धं भिक्षुभिर् एव च ॥ ६४ ॥
cāraṇair
vandibhir nīcair nāpitair bālakair api |
na mantraṃ maitmān kuryāt sārdhaṃ bhikṣubhir eva ca || 5.64 ||
A wise man should not
consult wandering actors, bards, mean persons, barbers, children and beggers.
यदैव राज्ये क्रियतेऽभिषेकस् तदैव याति व्यसनेषु बुद्धिः ।
घटा नृपाणाम् अभिषेक-काले सहाम्भसैवापदम् उद्गिरन्ति ॥ ६५ ॥
yadaiva
rājye kriyate'bhiṣekas tadaiva yāti vyasaneṣu buddhiḥ |
ghaṭā nṛpāṇām abhiṣeka-kāle sahāmbhasaivāpadam udgiranti || 5.65 ||
Once someone is
consecrated as king of a state, he automatically courts difficulties along with
it; for at the time of coronation when holy waters are poured down by pitchers
troubles are also poured along with it.
रामस्य व्रजनं वने निवसनं पाण्डोः सुतानां वने
वृष्णीनां निधनं नलस्य नृपते राज्यात् परिभ्रंशनम् ।
सौदासं तद्-अवस्थम् अर्जुन-वधं सञ्चिन्त्य लङ्केश्वरं
दृष्ट्वा राज्य-कृते विडम्बन-गतं तस्मान् न तद् वाञ्छयेत् ॥ ६६ ॥
rāmasya
vrajanaṃ vane nivasanaṃ pāṇḍoḥ sutānāṃ vane
vṛṣṇīnāṃ nidhanaṃ nalasya nṛpate rājyāt
paribhraṃśanam |
saudāsaṃ tad-avastham arjuna-vadhaṃ sañcintya laṅkeśvaraṃ
dṛṣṭvā rājya-kṛte viḍambana-gataṃ tasmān na
tad vāñchayet || 5.66 ||
Sri Rama had to live in a forest, the Pandavas too had to live in a forest, the Yādavas died, Nala was exiled, Soudāsa was cursed, KārtaVeerārjuna was killed by Parashurama, and the mighty Rāvana also had to die…all because they coveted a kingdom. ( Weaver's wife advising her husband not to ask for the boon to become a king as advised by the barber )
