श्रुत्वा धर्मं विजानाति श्रुत्वा त्यजति दुर्मतिम् ।
श्रुत्वा ज्ञानमवाप्नोति श्रुत्वा मोक्षमवाप्नुयात् ॥
śrutvā dharmaṃ vijānāti
śrutvā tyajati durmatim |
śrutvā jñānamavāpnoti śrutvā mokṣamavāpnuyāt ||Chanakya niti
By means
of hearing one understands dharma, malignity vanishes, knowledge is acquired,
and liberation from material bondage is gained.
श्रूयतां धर्म-सर्वस्वं श्रुत्वा चैवावधार्यताम् ।
आत्मनः प्रतिकूलानि परेषां न समाचरेत् ॥ १०४ ॥
śrūyatāṃ dharma-sarvasvaṃ śrutvā
caivāvadhāryatām |
ātmanaḥ pratikūlāni pareṣāṃ na samācaret ||
3.104 ||
Listen to the essence of all dharma, and then think it over
well. Do never perform things, that are disagreeable to one-self, towards
others.
तूर्णं पृच्छति वार्तिकान्सचकितो भीत्वा परं संभ्रमात् |
पाथोधिजलधिर्पंयोधिरुदधिर्वारांनिधिर्वारिधिः ||
Shrutva saagara bandhanam dasa shiraah sarvaimukair ekadaa
Toornam pruchati vaartikaan sachakito bheetva param sambhramaat I
Baddah satyam apaamnidhir jalanidhih kilaaladhih toyaadhih
Paathodhih jaladhir payodhir udadhir vaaraamnidhir vaaridhi II
The ten headed Ravana having heard from his spies that the ocean has
been bridged by the monkeys, was agitated and filled with fear, spoke like this
simultaneously through his ten mouths: Has the ocean been truly bridged?
( The poet is using ten different words to refer to the ocean,Saagaram
– 1.Apaamnidhih,2Jalanidhih,3. Kilaaladhih, 4. Toyadhih, 5.Paathodhih, 6. Jaladhih,
7. Payodhih, 8. Udhadhih, 9. Vaaramnidhih, 10. Vaaridhih )
पीत्वा रसं तु कटुकं मधुरं समानं
माधुर्यमेव जनयेन्मधुमक्षिकासौ ।
सन्तस्तथैव समसज्जनदुर्जनानां
श्रुत्वा वचः मधुरसूक्तरसं सृजन्ति ॥
peetva rasan tu katukan
madhuran samaanan
maadhuryamev janayenmadhumakshikaasau
.
santastathaiv samasajjanadurjanaanaan
shrutva vachah madhurasooktarasan
srjanti .
Drinking bitter juice from flowers the honey
bee produces sweet honey only; similarly good men even after listening to
wicked men speak sweet words only.
न शृण्वन्ति पिशुनजनं खलानाम् ऋद्धिं न प्रेक्षन्ते ॥
dhanyā badhirā andhāḥ sa eva jīvanti mānuṣe loke ।
na śṛṇvanti piśunajanaṃ khalānām ṛddhiṃ na prekṣante ॥ - saptaśatī
Blessed are those people who live in this world as deaf and blind, for, they do not have to listen to malicious words of the slanderers or see the prosperity of the evil.
अप्रियस्य तु पथ्यस्य, वक्ता श्रोता च दुर्लभः ॥
apriyasya tu pathyasya, vaktA shrotA cha durlabhaH ||
Honey-coated words there are so many people to utter. But bitter truth, though benevolent, is rarely spoken, much less listened to by any.
दर्शने स्पर्शणे वापि श्रवणे भाषणेऽपि वा
।
यत्र
द्रवत्यन्तरङ्गं स स्नेह
इति
कथ्यते ॥
darshane sparshaNe vApi shravaNe
bhAShaNe&pi vA |
yatra dravatyantara~ggaM sa sneha iti kathyate
||
If seeing or touching (somebody); listening
to or speaking with (someone) touches your heart, then it is called love or affection
(sneha).
