MITRALABHA-10-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI:517

अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघु-चेतसाम्
उदार-चरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ७१
ayaṃ nijaḥ paro veti gaṇanā laghu-cetasām |
udāra-caritānāṃ tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam || 1.71 ||
The small-minded count "this is mine and that is someone else's";
For the men of great character, the whole world is their family!

कश्चित् कस्यचिन् मित्रं कश्चित् कस्यचिद् रिपुः
व्यवहारेण मित्राणि जायन्ते रिपवस् तथा ७२
na kaścit kasyacin mitraṃ na kaścit kasyacid ripuḥ |
vyavahāreṇa mitrāṇi jāyante ripavas tathā || 1.72 ||
No one is anyone's friend, no one is anyone's enemy. Friends and enemies are born by one’s own conduct.

आपत्सु मित्रं जानीयाद् रणे शूरं ऋणे शुचिम्
भार्यां क्षीणेषु वित्तेषु व्यसनेषु बान्धवान् ७३

āpatsu mitraṃ jānīyād raṇe śūraṃ ṛṇe śucim |
bhāryāṃ kṣīṇeṣu vitteṣu vyasaneṣu ca bāndhavān || 1.73 ||

Friend in difficulties, The powerful in war, In debt the virtuous, The wife in penury ,And know relatives in calamities.

उत्सवे व्यसने प्राप्ते दुर्भिक्षे शत्रु-सङ्कटे
राज-द्वारे श्मशाने यस् तिष्ठति बान्धवः ७४

utsave vyasane prāpte durbhikṣe śatru-saṅkaṭe |
rāja-dvāre śmaśāne ca yas tiṣṭhati sa bāndhavaḥ || 1.74 ||

He is a true relative who stands during happiness and sorrow, during a famine or when enemies attack; as also at the royal-court and at the cremation ground.

सुहृदां हित-कामानां यः शृणोति भाषितम्
विपत् सन्निहिता तस्य नरः शत्रुनन्दनः ७५

suhṛdāṃ hita-kāmānāṃ yaḥ śṛṇoti na bhāṣitam |
vipat sannihitā tasya sa naraḥ śatrunandanaḥ || 1.75 ||

One who does not listen to well- meaning friends invites adversity; such a one is a delight of his enemies.

अपराधो मेऽस्तीति नैतद् विश्वास-कारणम्
विद्यते हि नृशंसेभ्यो भयं गुणवताम् अपि ७६

aparādho na me'stīti naitad viśvāsa-kāraṇam |
vidyate hi nṛśaṃsebhyo bhayaṃ guṇavatām api || 1.76 ||

“I have done no wrong” should not be the reason for having confidence in a wicked person. Even highly accomplished persons have fear from the wicked.

दीप-निर्वाण-गन्धं सुहृद्-वाक्यम् अरुन्धतीम्
जिघ्रन्ति शृण्वन्ति प्श्यन्ति गतायुषः ७७

dīpa-nirvāṇa-gandhaṃ ca suhṛd-vākyam arundhatīm |
na jighranti na śṛṇvanti na pśyanti gatāyuṣaḥ || 1.77 ||

Those whose life has ended, do not perceive the smell of an extinguished lamp, listen not to the words of their friend and not see the star Arundati.

परोक्षे कार्य-हन्तारं प्रत्यक्षे प्रिय-वादिनम्
वर्जयेत् तादृशं मित्रं विष-कुम्भं पयोमुखम् ७८
parokṣe kārya-hantāraṃ pratyakṣe priya-vādinam |
varjayet tādṛśaṃ mitraṃ viṣa-kumbhaṃ payomukham || 1.78 ||
Disrupting one's work in his absence and speaking pleasant words in his presence - shun such a friend as if they are milk at the mouth of a pot of poison.
