MITRALABHA-7-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI:514

vinā vartanam evaite na tyajanti mamāntikam |
tan me prāṇa-vyayenāpi jīvayaitān mamāśritān || 1.46 ||

Even without wages they do not forsake me, therefore save my dependents even at the cost of my life.

māṃsa-mūtra-purīṣāsthi-pūrite'tra kalevare |
vinaśvare vihāyāsthāṃ yaśaḥ pālaya mitra me || 1.47 ||
Ignoring this perishable body made of flesh, urine, ordure and bones, oh! Friend save my reputation.

yadi nityam anityena nirmalaṃ mala-vāhinā |
yaśaḥ kāyena labhyeta tan na labdhaṃ bhaven nu kim || 1.48 ||
If lasting fame can be obtained by sacrificing this body, which is perishable and a vehicle of dirt, what would not be gained?

śarīrasya guṇānāṃ ca dūram atyantam antaram |
śarīraṃ kṣaṇa-vidhvaṃsi kalpānta-sthāyino guṇāḥ || 1.49 ||

There is considerable distance between the body and good qualities. The body can die any minute but the good qualities are remembered for many ages.

yo 'dhikād yojana-śatān paśyatīhāmiṣaṃ khagaḥ |
sa eva prāpta-kālas tu pāśa-bandhaṃ na paśyati || 1.50 ||
The bird which sees it’s prey a hundred yojanas away, when time is adverse, fails to see the snares laid to trap it even though very near.

śaśi-divākarayor graha-pīḍanaṃ

gaja-bhujaṅgamayor api bandhanam |
matimatāṃ ca vilokya daridratāṃ

 vidhir aho balavān iti me matiḥ || 1.51 ||

Seeing the eclipse of the sun and the moon by the planet Rahu, the captivity of the elephant and the snake and the poverty of intelligent people, my conclusion is: Oh, Fate is mighty!

vyomaikānta-vihāriṇo 'pi vihagāḥ samprāpnuvanty āpadaṃ

 badhyante nipuṇair agādha-salilān matsyāḥ samudrād api |
durnītaṃ kim ihāsti kiṃ sucaritaṃ kaḥ sthāna-lābhe guṇaḥ

kālo hi vyasana-prasārita-karo gṛhṇāti dūrād api || 1.52 ||

Even birds sporting in the sky meet with calamity; fishes in the deep sea are caught by experts ; so what is evil or good in this world, or of what avail is a position of advantage? The lord of time(yama) with his outstretched hands, in the form of calamities, seizes even from a distance.

yāni kāni ca mitrāṇi kartavyāni śatāni ca |
paśya mūṣika-mitreṇa kapotā mukta-bandhanāḥ || 1.53 ||

One should make  hundreds of friends, whatever be their nature; behold, the pigeons were released from bonds by their friend, the mouse.
