MITRALABHA-8-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI:515

The deer, the jackal and the crow :







यद् येन युज्यते लोके बुधस् तत् तेन योजयेत्
अहम् अन्नं भवान् भोक्ता कथं प्रीतिर् भविष्यति ५४
yad yena yujyate loke budhas tat tena yojayet |
aham annaṃ bhavān bhoktā kathaṃ prītir bhaviṣyati || 1.54 ||
A wise man should unite with another only with that which is fit to be united  in this world; I am the food and you are the consumer; how can friendship exist between us? (The crow to the fox)

भक्ष्य-भक्षयोः प्रीतिर् विपत्तेः कारणं मतम्
शृगालात् पाशबद्धो ऽसौ मृगः काकेन रक्षितः ५५

bhakṣya-bhakṣayoḥ prītir vipatteḥ kāraṇaṃ matam |
śṛgālāt pāśabaddho 'sau mṛgaḥ kākena rakṣitaḥ || 1.55 ||

The friendship between the food and it’s eater is the cause for misfortune: the deer that was caught in a snare through the strategy of a jackal was saved by a crow.

अज्ञात-कुल-शीलस्य वासो देयो कस्यचित्
मार्जारस्य हि दोषेण हतो गृध्रो जरद्-गवः ५६

ajñāta-kula-śīlasya vāso deyo na kasyacit |
mārjārasya hi doṣeṇa hato gṛdhro jarad-gavaḥ || 1.56 ||

Offering refuge to a person whose antecedents and character are unknown should never be done; for the fault of a cat the vulture JaradGava lost it’s life.

तावद् भयस्य भेतव्यं यावद् भयम् अनागतम्
आगतं तु भयं वीक्ष्य नरः कुर्याद् यथोचितम् ५७

tāvad bhayasya bhetavyaṃ yāvad bhayam anāgatam |
āgataṃ tu bhayaṃ vīkṣya naraḥ kuryād yathocitam || 1.57 ||

you should be afraid of crises as long as they have not overtaken you, but if the crisis comes upon you, it is advisable to strike without any hesitation.

जाति-मात्रेण किं कश्चिद् वध्यते पूज्यते क्वचित्
व्यवहारं परिज्ञाय वध्यः पूज्यो ऽथवा भवेत् ५८

jāti-mātreṇa kiṃ kaścid vadhyate pūjyate kvacit |
vyavahāraṃ parijñāya vadhyaḥ pūjyo 'thavā bhavet || 1.58 ||

Is any one punished or praised based purely on one’s caste? Only after knowing completely about one’s action decision should be taken regarding punishment or respect.

अराव् अप्य् उचितं कार्यम् आतिथ्यं गृहम् आगते
छेत्तुम् अप्य् आगते छायां नोपसंहरते द्रुमः ५९

arāv apy ucitaṃ kāryam ātithyaṃ gṛham āgate |
chettum apy āgate chāyāṃ nopasaṃharate drumaḥ ||1.59 ||

Even if your enemy comes to your house, he should be treated as a guest. The tree gives shade even to the man who comes to cut it.

तृणानि भूमिर् उदकं वाक् चतुर्थी सूनृता
एतान्य् अपि सतां गेहे नोच्छिद्यन्ते कदाचन ६०

tṛṇāni bhūmir udakaṃ vāk caturthī ca sūnṛtā |
etāny api satāṃ gehe nocchidyante kadācana || 1.60 ||

Houses of good men never lack these four things – A grass mat and soft ground to rest on, water to quench thirst, and pleasant words to speak.

बालो वा यदि वा वृद्धो युवा वा गृहम् आगतः
तस्य पूजा विधातव्या सर्वस्याभ्यागतो गुरुः ६१

bālo vā yadi vā vṛddho yuvā vā gṛham āgataḥ |
tasya pūjā vidhātavyā sarvasyābhyāgato guruḥ ||1. 61 ||

Whether he's is a child, an old person or a young man, whoever comes to your house should be received with respect. A guest deserves respect by everyone.
