 SUBHASHITHANI:521

The friendship of the pure minded person is very different from that of a deceitful person; deceitful person’s speech is in one direction and action in quite the opposite direction.

manasy anyad vacasy anyat karmaṇy anyad durātmanām |
manasy ekaṃ vacasy ekaṃ karmaṇy ekaṃ mahātmanām || 1.102 ||
The thoughts, words and deeds of the vile minded do not match one another. The thoughts, words and deeds of the magnanimous are all identical.

iti vijñāya matimān sva-sthānaṃ na parityajet || 1.103 ||
Teeth, hair, nails, and men do not look graceful if they abandon their respective place. Knowing this a wise person should not leave his place.

tatraiva nidhanaṃ yānti kākāḥ kāpuruṣā mṛgāḥ || 1.104 ||
The lions, elephants and the virtuous people with high self-esteem quit their position immediately once their esteem is hurt. The crows, cats and the vicious people wish to continue in the same position.

ko vīrasya manasvinaḥ sva-viṣayaḥ ko vā videśaḥ smṛtaḥ
yaṃ deśaṃ śrayate tam eva kurute bāhu-pratāpārjitam |
yad daṃṣṭrānakha-lāṅgula-praharaṇaḥ siṃho vanaṃ gāhate
tasminn eva hata-dvipendra-rudhirais tṛṣṇāṃ chinnatty ātmanaḥ || 1.105 ||
Wise and brave men do not think in terms of - “This mine” and “that is his”. Similarly, they do not consider one place as theirs’ and other places as foreign. By their talent Where ever they go they make it their own, just as a lion rules the entire forest which it occupies. Also, by its strength kills the elephant and drinks it’s blood. The brave men’s behaviour is seen as very similar.
calaty ekena pādena tiṣṭhaty ekena buddhimān |
nāsamīkṣya paraṃ sthānaṃ pūrvam āyatanaṃ tyajet || 1.106 ||
A Wise man moves with one foot and with other firmly rooted on the ground. Without ensuring a safe place for residence never leave the present.
paropadeśe pāṇḍityaṃ sarveṣāṃ sukaraṃ nṛṇām |
dharme svīyam anuṣṭhānaṃ kasyacit tu mahātmanaḥ || 1.107 ||
When advising others, it is very easy for everyone to show off their erudition. But when it comes to oneself following the path of dharma, it is possible for a select few mahātmās (alone).

yasmin deśe na sammāno na vṛttir na ca bāndhavaḥ |
na ca vidyāgamaḥ kaścit taṃ deśaṃ parivarjayet || 1.108 ||
