MITRALABHA-9-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI:516


निर्गुणेष्व् अपि सत्त्वेषु दयां कुर्वन्ति साधवः
हि संहरते ज्योत्स्नां चन्द्रश् चाण्डाल-वेश्मनः ६२
nirguṇeṣv api sattveṣu dayāṃ kurvanti sādhavaḥ |
na hi saṃharate jyotsnāṃ candraś cāṇḍāla-veśmanaḥ || 1.62 ||
Noble men are kind to unworthy beings too. The moon does not withhold his moonlight from the house of an outcast.

अतिथिर् यस्य भग्नाशो गृहात् प्रतिनिवर्तते
दत्त्वा दुष्कृतं तस्मै पुण्यम् आदाय गच्छति ६३

atithir yasya bhagnāśo gṛhāt pratinivartate |
sa dattvā duṣkṛtaṃ tasmai puṇyam ādāya gacchati || 1.63 ||

When a guest turns away from a man’s house disappointed, he transfers his sin to the house-holder and takes the punya with him.

उत्तमस्यापि वर्णस्य नीचो ऽपि गृहम् आगतः
पूजनीयो यथा-योग्यं सर्व-देव-मयो ऽतिथिः ६४
uttamasyāpi varṇasya nīco 'pi gṛham āgataḥ |
pūjanīyo yathā-yogyaṃ sarva-deva-mayo 'tithiḥ || 1.64 ||
 If a person of lower strata of society  comes to the house of
a person of the highest class as a guest, he should be
welcomed and extended due courtesy because an unannounced
guest is considered as the embodiment of all the Gods. 
(Cat to the vulture, pleading for refuge.)

सर्व-हिंसा-निवृत्ता ये नराः सर्व-सहाश् ये
सर्वस्याश्रय-भूताश् ते नराः स्वर्ग-गामिनः ६५

sarva-hiṃsā-nivṛttā ye narāḥ sarva-sahāś ca ye |
sarvasyāśraya-bhūtāś ca te narāḥ svarga-gāminaḥ || 1.65 ||

Those men who are averse to violence, who are tolerant and who are refuge of all beings go to heaven. ( Cat to the vulture )

एक एव सुहृद् धर्मो निधनेऽप्य् अनुयाति यः
शरीरेण समं नाशं सर्वम् अन्यद् हि गच्छति ६६

eka eva suhṛd dharmo nidhane'py anuyāti yaḥ |
śarīreṇa samaṃ nāśaṃ sarvam anyad hi gacchati ||1.66 ||

Moral conduct is the only friend which follows one even after death; everything else is lost along with the body.

यो ऽत्ति यस्य यदा मांसम् उभयोः पश्यतान्तरम्
एकस्य क्षणिका प्रीतिर् अन्यः प्राणैर् विमुच्यते ६७

yo 'tti yasya yadā māṃsam ubhayoḥ paśyatāntaram |
ekasya kṣaṇikā prītir anyaḥ prāṇair vimucyate || 1.67 ||

One who eats the flesh of another, know the difference between the two; one gets momentary pleasure while the other loses it’s life.

मर्तव्यम् इति यद् दुःखं पुरुषस्योपजायते
शक्यस् तेनानुमानेन परो ऽपि परिरक्षितुम् ६८

martavyam iti yad duḥkhaṃ puruṣasyopajāyate |

akyas tenānumānena paro 'pi parirakṣitum ||1.68 ||

The sorrow felt by one when he thinks death is near cannot be easily understood by others.

स्वच्छन्द-वन-जातेन शाकेनापि प्रपूर्यते
अस्य दग्धोदरस्यार्थे कः कुर्यात् पातकं महत् ६९

svacchanda-vana-jātena śākenāpi prapūryate |
asya dagdhodarasyārthe kaḥ kuryāt pātakaṃ mahat || 1.69 ||

When the belly can be satisfied by herbs growing spontaneously in the forest, who would commit a great sin for filling it?

यत्र विद्वज्-जनो नास्ति श्लाघ्यस् तत्राल्पधीर् अपि
निरस्त-पादपे देशे एरण्डो ऽपि द्रुमायते ७०

yatra vidvaj-jano nāsti ślāghyas tatrālpadhīr api |
nirasta-pādape deśe eraṇḍo 'pi drumāyate || 1.70 ||

Where wise men are not there even a man of a little knowledge is respected; in a place where trees are absent even a castor-oil plant is considered as a tree.
