MITRALABHA-12-GAINING OF FRIENDS

 SUBHASHITHANI:519

tiraścām api viśvāso dṛṣṭaḥ puṇyaika-karmaṇām |
satāṃ hi sādhu-śīlatvāt svabhāvo na nivartate || 1.86 ||

Trusting each other is prevalent even amongst animals whose actions are wholly of good nature. The good do not change from their inherent goodness.

sādhoḥ prakopitasyāpi mano nāyāti vikriyām |
na hi tāpayituṃ śakyaṃ sāgarāmbhas tṛṇolkayā || 1.87 ||

Even when instigated by others, the mind of a good man never wavers from doing the right. It is not possible to heat the water of ocean by a torch of dried grass.

mārjāro mahiṣo meṣaḥ kākaḥ kāpuruṣas tathā |
viśvāsāt prabhavanty ete viśvāsas tatra no hitaḥ || 1.88 ||

A cat, a buffalo, a ram, a crow, and a wicked man – these tend to exploit the trust placed in them; hence there is no benefit in placing trust in them.

śatruṇā na hi sandadhyāt saṃśliṣṭenāpi sandhinā |
sutaptam api pānīyaṃ śamayaty eva pāvakam || 1.89 ||

One should not make friends with an enemy, even if he seeks a truce. Because, no matter how much heat is given to water, it ends up extinguishing the fire.

durjanaḥ parihartavyo vidyayālaṅkṛto 'pi san |
maṇinā bhūṣitaḥ sarpaḥ kim asau na bhayaṅkaraḥ || 1.90 ||

Though adorned with learning a wicked man should be avoided. Is not a serpent dangerous, though it is bedecked with jewel?

yad aśakyaṃ na tac chaktyaṃ yac chaktyaṃ śakyam eva tat |
nodake śakaṭaṃ yāti na ca naur gacchati sthale || 1.91 ||
What is impossible can never be possible; and what is possible is certainly possible; A cart cannot travel on water nor can a boat on land.
.-Thirukkural 496
Though a chariot might have string wheels it cannot travel in sea. It will sink. Similarly, a boat that travels in sea cannot travel in land. It will run aground.
mahatāpy artha-sāreṇa yo viśvasiti śatruṣu |
bhāryāsu ca viraktāsu tad-antaṃ tasya jīvanam || 1.92 ||
He who depends on the strength of wealth, given by his enemies, although great, trusts to his enemies or to wives who have no love for him any longer, finds his life end there.
SRI KRISHNAYA THUBHYAM NAMAH
