SUHRID BHEDA- SEPARATION OF FRIENDS-18

 SUBHASHITHANI:557

Damanaka, the fox is planting seeds of disaffection between the good friends lion and the bull. 

सो ऽस्ति पुरुषो लोके यो कामयते श्रियम्
परस्य युवतिं रम्यां सादरं नेक्षतेऽत्र कः १३१

na so 'sti puruṣo loke yo na kāmayate śriyam |
parasya yuvatiṃ ramyāṃ sādaraṃ nekṣate'tra kaḥ || 2.131 ||

There is no man in this world who does not desire wealth. Who doesn’t look wishfully at another man’s charming young wife?

कुर्वन्न् अपि व्यलीकानि यः प्रियः प्रिय एव सः
अशेष-दोष-दुष्टो ऽपि कायः कस्य वल्लभः १३२

kurvann api vyalīkāni yaḥ priyaḥ priya eva saḥ |
aśeṣa-doṣa-duṣṭo 'pi kāyaḥ kasya na vallabhaḥ || 2.132 ||

In spite of being affected with many distempers, ailments or diseases, who does not love their own body? Although acting disagreeably or doing wrongs, a beloved person is ever a beloved person.

अप्रियाण्य् अपि कुर्वाणो यः प्रियः प्रिय एव सः
दग्ध-मन्दिर-सारेऽपि कस्य वह्नाव् अनादरः १३३

apriyāṇy api kurvāṇo yaḥ priyaḥ priya eva saḥ |
dagdha-mandira-sāre'pi kasya vahnāv anādaraḥ || 2.133 ||

Although acting in unpleasant manner a beloved is always beloved. Even if the fire burns ones own house, will any one feel disrespect for fire (agni).

यस्मिन्न् एवाधिकं चक्षुर् आरोहयति पार्थिवः
सुतेऽमात्येऽप्य् उदासीने लक्ष्म्याश्रीयते जनः १३४

yasminn evādhikaṃ cakṣur ārohayati pārthivaḥ |
sute'mātye'py udāsīne sa lakṣmyāśrīyate janaḥ || 2.134 ||

He on whom the king casts his eyes, be a son, a minister, or on a stranger, is favoured by goddess of wealth.

अप्रियस्यापि पथ्यस्य परिणामः सुखावहः
वक्ता श्रोता यत्रास्ति रमन्ते तत्र सम्पदः १३५

apriyasyāpi pathyasya pariṇāmaḥ sukhāvahaḥ |
vaktā śrotā ca yatrāsti ramante tatra sampadaḥ || 2.135 ||

The result of what is wholesome although unpalatable, brings happiness. Where there is a speaker and a listener when something unpleasant  but beneficial is said  there will be sure success.

मूल-भृत्यान् परित्यज्य नागन्तून् प्रतिमानयेत्
नातः परतरो दोषो राज्य-भेद-करो यतः १३६

mūla-bhṛtyān parityajya nāgantūn pratimānayet |
nātaḥ parataro doṣo rājya-bheda-karo yataḥ || 2.136 ||

Though a hereditary servant commits a fault a king should not encourage a stranger. There is no greater fault as calamitous to the kingdom than this.

दुर्जनो नार्जवं याति सेव्यमानो ऽपि नित्यशः
स्वेद-नाभ्यञ्जनोपायैः श्वपुच्छम् इव नामितम् १३७

durjano nārjavaṃ yāti sevyamāno 'pi nityaśaḥ |
sveda-nābhyañjanopāyaiḥ śvapuccham iva nāmitam || 2.137 ||

A wicked man returns to his evil ways even when assiduously well treated; just as a dog's tail resuming its natural bent not withstanding expedients like sweating and rubbing with unguents.

SUHRID BHEDA- SEPARATION OF FRIENDS-17

SUBHASHITHANI:556 

आपद्य् उन्मार्ग-गमने कार्य-कालात्ययेषु
कल्याण-वचनं ब्रूयाद् अपृष्टो ऽपि हितो नरः १२४

āpady unmārga-gamane kārya-kālātyayeṣu ca |
kalyāṇa-vacanaṃ brūyād apṛṣṭo 'pi hito naraḥ || 2.124 ||

In the case of a calamity, when a man strays from the right path, or when time for action is running away; a friendly man, even unasked, should give his wholesome advice.

भोगस्य भाजनं राजा राजा कार्य-भाजनम्
राज-कार्य-परिध्वंसी मन्त्री दोषेण लिप्यते १२५

bhogasya bhājanaṃ rājā na rājā kārya-bhājanam |
rāja-kārya-paridhvaṃsī mantrī doṣeṇa lipyate || 2.125 ||

The king’s sphere is to indulge in pleasure, while that of the minister is to carry out business. A minister incurs the blame for the king’s failure.

वरं प्राण-परित्यागः शिरसा वापि कर्तनम्
तु स्वामि-पदावाप्ति-पातकेच्छोर् उपेक्षणम् १२६

varaṃ prāṇa-parityāgaḥ śirasā vāpi kartanam |
na tu svāmi-padāvāpti-pātakecchor upekṣaṇam || 2.126 ||

It is better to abandon one’s life, or even decapitation, but not the tolerance of one committing the sin of desiring to usurp the position of his master

अत्युच्छ्रिते मन्त्रिणि पार्थिवे

विष्टभ्य पादाव् उपतिष्ठते श्रीः
सा स्त्री-स्वभावाद् असहा भरस्य

तयोर् द्वयोर् एकतरं जहाति १२७

atyucchrite mantriṇi pārthive ca

 viṣṭabhya pādāv upatiṣṭhate śrīḥ |
sā strī-svabhāvād asahā bharasya

 tayor dvayor ekataraṃ jahāti || 2.127 ||

When a minister and a king is each excessively exalted, goddess Lakshmi stands firmly with both her feet; she because of her female nature, unable to bear the weight of both at once, abandons one of them.

 

 एकं भूमि-पतिः करोति सचिवं राज्ये प्रमाणं यदा

 तं मोहात् श्रयते मदः मदालस्येन निर्विद्यते
निर्विण्णस्य पदं करोति हृदये तस्य स्वतन्त्र-स्पृहा-

 स्वातन्त्र्य-स्पृहया ततः नृपतेः प्राणान् अभिद्रुह्यति १२८

ekaṃ bhūmi-patiḥ karoti sacivaṃ rājye pramāṇaṃ yadā

taṃ mohāt śrayate madaḥ sa ca madālasyena nirvidyate |
nirviṇṇasya padaṃ karoti hṛdaye tasya svatantra-spṛhā-

 svātantrya-spṛhayā tataḥ sa nṛpateḥ prāṇān abhidruhyati || 2.128 ||

When a king makes one minister the sole authority of the kingdom, from delusion vanity approaches him, he alienates himself from the king through indolence brought on by pride, once alienated a desire for independence makes a foot-hold, through the desire for independence he plots even the death of the king.

विष-दग्धस्य भक्तस्य दन्तस्य चलितस्य
अमात्यस्य दुष्टस्य मूलाद् उद्धरणं सुखम् १२९

viṣa-dagdhasya bhaktasya dantasya calitasya ca |
amātyasya ca duṣṭasya mūlād uddharaṇaṃ sukham || 2.129 ||

Poisoned food, a loose tooth, and a wicked minister, complete eradication leads to happiness.

यः कुर्यात् सचिवायत्तां श्रियं तद्-व्यसने सति
सो ऽन्धवज् जगती-पालः सीदेत् सञ्चारकैर् विना १३०

yaḥ kuryāt sacivāyattāṃ śriyaṃ tad-vyasane sati |
so 'ndhavaj jagatī-pālaḥ sīdet sañcārakair vinā || 2.130 ||

A king whose prosperity depends on a minister, when the minister suffers a calamity sinks, like the blinds without guides.

SUHRID BHEDA- SEPARATION OF FRIENDS-16

    SUBHASHITHANI:555
दानेन मानेन नार्जवेन सेवया
शस्त्रेण शास्त्रेण सर्वथा विषमाः स्त्रियः ११६
na dānena na mānena nārjavena na sevayā |
na śastreṇa na śāstreṇa sarvathā viṣamāḥ striyaḥ || 2.116 ||
Not by liberality, nor by honour, nor by rectitude, nor by service, nor by threatening with weapons, nor by scriptural advice, can women be won over; they are difficult to please.

गुणाश्रयं कीर्ति-युतं कान्तं

पतिं रतिज्ञं सधनं युवानम्
विहाय शीघ्रं वनिता व्रजन्ति

नरान्तरं शील-गुणादि-हीनम् ११७

guṇāśrayaṃ kīrti-yutaṃ ca kāntaṃ

 patiṃ ratijñaṃ sadhanaṃ yuvānam |
vihāya śīghraṃ vanitā vrajanti

 narāntaraṃ śīla-guṇādi-hīnam ||2.117 ||

A woman, abandoning her husband who is the abode of character, endowed with fame, handsome, skilled in love, wealthy and youthful, quickly resort to another man destitute of character, good qualities and the like.

तादृशीं प्रीतिम् उपैति नारी

विचित्र-शय्या शयितापि कामम्
यथा हि दूर्वादि-विकीर्ण-भूमौ

प्रयाति सौख्यं पर-कान्ति-सङ्गात् ११८

na tādṛśīṃ prītim upaiti nārī

 vicitra-śayyā śayitāpi kāmam |
yathā hi dūrvādi-vikīrṇa-bhūmau

 prayāti saukhyaṃ para-kānti-saṅgāt || 2.118 ||

A woman does not get the satisfaction although sleeping in a well decorated bed to her liking, as the pleasure she attains by the companionship of strange lover, on the mere ground spread with Druva grass, and the like.

आहारो द्विगुणः स्त्रीणां बुद्धिस् तासां चतुर्-गुणा
षड्-गुणो व्यवसायश् कामाश् चाष्टगुणः स्मृतः ११९

āhāro dviguṇaḥ strīṇāṃ buddhis tāsāṃ catur-guṇā |
ṣaḍ-guṇo vyavasāyaś ca kāmāś cāṣṭaguṇaḥ smṛtaḥ || 2.119 ||

The food of women is said to be two fold, their sharp intellect is four fold, perseverance is six fold, and their lust eight fold.

उपायेन जयो यादृग् रिपोस् तादृङ् हेतिभिः
उपाय-ज्ञो ऽल्प-कायो ऽपि शूरैः परिभूयते १२०

upāyena jayo yādṛg ripos tādṛṅ na hetibhiḥ |
upāya-jño 'lpa-kāyo 'pi na śūraiḥ paribhūyate || 2.120 ||

What is possible by stratagem is not possible by use of weapons. Even a bodily weak person equipped with clever stratagem cannot be conquered by valorous persons.

दुष्टा भार्या शठं मित्रं भृत्यश् चोत्तर-दायकः
-सर्पे गृहे वासो मृत्युर् एव संशयः १२१

duṣṭā bhāryā śaṭhaṃ mitraṃ bhṛtyaś cottara-dāyakaḥ |
sa-sarpe ca gṛhe vāso mṛtyur eva na saṃśayaḥ || 2.121 ||

A wicked wife, a cunning friend, an insolent servant, and residence in a house infested with snakes is death; without doubt.

बुद्धिर् यस्य बलं तस्य निर्बुद्धेस् तु कुतो बलम्
पश्य सिंहो मदोन्मत्तः शशकेन निपातितः १२२

buddhir yasya balaṃ tasya nirbuddhes tu kuto balam |
paśya siṃho madonmattaḥ śaśakena nipātitaḥ || 2.122 ||

One who has intelligence has strength; how can one without talent be strong? Behold! A lion intoxicated by pride was killed by a hare.

त्रास-हेतोर् विनीतिस् तु क्रियते जीविताशया
पञ्चत्वं चेद् गमिष्यामि किं सिंहानुनयेन मे १२३

trāsa-hetor vinītis tu kriyate jīvitāśayā |
pañcatvaṃ ced gamiṣyāmi kiṃ siṃhānunayena me || 2.123 ||

It is the hope of saving one’s life homage is rendered to the source of fear. If I have to die, why should I conciliate with the lion?

SUHRID BHEDA- SEPARATION OF FRIENDS-15

 SUBHASHITHANI:554

स्तब्धस्य नश्यति यशो विषम् अस्य मैत्री

नष्टेन्द्रियस्य कुलम् अर्थ-परस्य धर्मः
विद्या-फलं व्यसनिनः कृपणस्य सौख्यं

राज्यं प्रमत्त-सचिवस्य नराधिपस्य १०८

stabdhasya naśyati yaśo viṣam asya maitrī

 naṣṭendriyasya kulam artha-parasya dharmaḥ |
vidyā-phalaṃ vyasaninaḥ kṛpaṇasya saukhyaṃ

 rājyaṃ pramatta-sacivasya narādhipasya || 2.108 ||

Inactive man loses glory, inconstant loses friendship, one who has lost vigour of his senses the family perishes, one who is after wealth loses virtue, one who is addicted to vices loses the fruit of learning, a miser loses happiness, and a king with careless minister loses his kingdom.

तस्करेभ्यो नियुक्तेभ्यः शत्रुभ्यो नृप-वल्लभात्
नृपतिर् निज-लोभाच् प्रजा रक्षेत् पितेव हि १०९

taskarebhyo niyuktebhyaḥ śatrubhyo nṛpa-vallabhāt |
nṛpatir nija-lobhāc ca prajā rakṣet piteva hi || 2.109 ||

A king should protect his subjects, like a father, from robbers, from harassing officers, from enemies, from his favourites, and from his own avarice.

स्वर्ण-रेखाम् अहं स्पृष्ट्वा बद्ध्वात्मानं दूतिका
आदित्सुश् मणिं साधुः स्व-दोषाद् दुःखिता इमे ११०

svarṇa-rekhām ahaṃ spṛṣṭvā baddhvātmānaṃ ca dūtikā |
āditsuś ca maṇiṃ sādhuḥ sva-doṣād duḥkhitā ime || 2.110 ||

I, having touched gold-streak (Suvarna rekha), and the messenger who bound herself; and the merchant who wished to steal the gem- All these suffered due to their own faults.

आदित्य-चन्द्रावनिलानलश्

द्यौर् भूमिर् आपो हृदयं यमश्
अहश् रात्रिश् उभे सन्ध्ये

 धर्मश् जानाति नरस्य वृत्तम् ११२

āditya-candrāvanilānalaś ca

dyaur bhūmir āpo hṛdayaṃ yamaś ca |
ahaś ca rātriś ca ubhe ca sandhye

dharmaś ca jānāti narasya vṛttam || 2.112 ||

The sun, the moon, the wind, the fire, the sky, the earth, the water, the heart, the death, the day, the night, both the twilights, and the dharma know all the activities of a man.

अतथ्यान्य् अपि तथ्यानि दर्शयन्ति हि पेशलाः
समे निम्नोन्नतानीव चित्र-कर्म-विदो जनाः ११३

atathyāny api tathyāni darśayanti hi peśalāḥ |
same nimnonnatānīva citra-karma-vido janāḥ || 2.113 ||

Clever people can make untruth appear like truth; just as an expert painter represents depressions and protrusions on an even surface.

उत्पन्नेषु कार्येषु मतिर् यस्य हीयते
निस्तरति दुर्गाणि गोपी जार-द्वयं यथा ११४

utpanneṣu ca kāryeṣu matir yasya na hīyate |
sa nistarati durgāṇi gopī jāra-dvayaṃ yathā || 2.114 ||

He whose intellect does not fail him during a sudden crisis, surmounts difficulties like the cow-herd’s wife got clear of her two lovers.

नाग्निस् तृप्यति काष्ठानां नापगानां महोदधिः
नान्तकः सर्व-भूतानां पुंसां वाम-लोचना ११५

nāgnis tṛpyati kāṣṭhānāṃ nāpagānāṃ mahodadhiḥ |
nāntakaḥ sarva-bhūtānāṃ na puṃsāṃ vāma-locanā || 2.115 ||

Fire is not satisfied with fuel, ocean with rivers, Yama with lives of all creatures, a beautiful woman with men.
