 SUBHASHITHANI:554

Inactive man loses glory, inconstant loses friendship, one who has lost vigour of his senses the family perishes, one who is after wealth loses virtue, one who is addicted to vices loses the fruit of learning, a miser loses happiness, and a king with careless minister loses his kingdom.

taskarebhyo niyuktebhyaḥ śatrubhyo nṛpa-vallabhāt |
nṛpatir nija-lobhāc ca prajā rakṣet piteva hi || 2.109 ||

A king should protect his subjects, like a father, from robbers, from harassing officers, from enemies, from his favourites, and from his own avarice.

svarṇa-rekhām ahaṃ spṛṣṭvā baddhvātmānaṃ ca dūtikā |
āditsuś ca maṇiṃ sādhuḥ sva-doṣād duḥkhitā ime || 2.110 ||

I, having touched gold-streak (Suvarna rekha), and the messenger who bound herself; and the merchant who wished to steal the gem- All these suffered due to their own faults.

dyaur bhūmir āpo hṛdayaṃ yamaś ca |
ahaś ca rātriś ca ubhe ca sandhye

dharmaś ca jānāti narasya vṛttam || 2.112 ||

The sun, the moon, the wind, the fire, the sky, the earth, the water, the heart, the death, the day, the night, both the twilights, and the dharma know all the activities of a man.

atathyāny api tathyāni darśayanti hi peśalāḥ |
same nimnonnatānīva citra-karma-vido janāḥ || 2.113 ||

Clever people can make untruth appear like truth; just as an expert painter represents depressions and protrusions on an even surface.

utpanneṣu ca kāryeṣu matir yasya na hīyate |
sa nistarati durgāṇi gopī jāra-dvayaṃ yathā || 2.114 ||

He whose intellect does not fail him during a sudden crisis, surmounts difficulties like the cow-herd’s wife got clear of her two lovers.

nāgnis tṛpyati kāṣṭhānāṃ nāpagānāṃ mahodadhiḥ |
nāntakaḥ sarva-bhūtānāṃ na puṃsāṃ vāma-locanā || 2.115 ||

Fire is not satisfied with fuel, ocean with rivers, Yama with lives of all creatures, a beautiful woman with men.
