क्षुद्र-शत्रुर् भवेद् यस् तु विक्रमान् नैव लभ्यते ।
तम् आहन्तुं पुरस्कार्यः सदृशस् तस्य सैनिकः ॥ ८४ ॥
kṣudra-śatrur
bhaved yas tu vikramān naiva labhyate |
tam āhantuṃ puraskāryaḥ sadṛśas tasya sainikaḥ || 2.84 ||
An insignificant enemy who
cannot be overcome by valour, a warrior of his kind should be used to eliminate
him. (In this
story a lion was troubled by a mouse, and to kill him the lion employed a cat by
name Dadhi-karna)
आज्ञा-भङ्गो नरेन्द्राणां ब्राह्मणानाम् अनादरः ।
पृथक् शय्या च नारीणाम् अशस्त्र-विहितो वधः ॥ ८५ ॥
ājñā-bhaṅgo
narendrāṇāṃ brāhmaṇānām anādaraḥ |
pṛthak śayyā ca nārīṇām aśastra-vihito vadhaḥ || 2.85 ||
When a king’s order is violated
the shastras recommend: For brahmins disrespect; for women, a separate bed;
each is, death without weapon as it were.
मतिर् एव बलाद् गरीयसी यद्-अभावे करिणाम् इयं दशा ।
इति घोषयतीव डिण्डिमः करिणो हस्तिपकाहतः क्वणन् ॥ ८६ ॥
matir
eva balād garīyasī yad-abhāve kariṇām iyaṃ daśā |
iti ghoṣayatīva ḍiṇḍimaḥ kariṇo hastipakāhataḥ kvaṇan || 2.86 ||
Intelligence is superior
to physical strength; For lack of which such is the condition of the elephants-
this, as it were, is proclaimed by the sounding of the kettle-drum, by the elephant
driver.
प्रतिवाचम् अदत्त केशवः शपमानाय न चेदि-भूभुजे ।
अनुहुङ्कुरुते घन-ध्वनिं न हि गोमायु-रुतानि केसरी ॥ ८७ ॥
prativācam
adatta keśavaḥ śapamānāya na cedi-bhūbhuje |
anuhuṅkurute ghana-dhvaniṃ na hi gomāyu-rutāni kesarī || 2.87 ||
Sri Krishna didn’t speak
back to Sisupala when he was hurling insults at him; Lion roars when there is a
thunder cloud and not to the yells of jackals.
तृणानि नोन्मूलयति प्रभञ्जनो
मृदूनि नीचैः प्रणलानि सर्वतः ।
समुच्छ्रितान् एव तरून् प्रबाधते
महान् महत्य् एव करोति विक्रमम् ॥ ८८ ॥
tṛṇāni
nonmūlayati prabhañjano
mṛdūni nīcaiḥ praṇalāni sarvataḥ |
samucchritān
eva tarūn prabādhate
mahān mahaty eva karoti vikramam || 2.88 ||
Tender grass is unaffected
and bends low when there is a hurricane. They uproot only big trees; the great show their valour
only on another great.
शब्द-मात्रान् न भेतव्यम् अज्ञात्वा शब्द-कारणम् ।
शब्द-हेतुं परिज्ञाय कुट्टनी गौरवं गता ॥ ८९ ॥
śabda-mātrān
na bhetavyam ajñātvā śabda-kāraṇam |
śabda-hetuṃ parijñāya kuṭṭanī gauravaṃ gatā || 2.89 ||
Without knowing the cause of the sound one should not be afraid; by ascertaining the cause of sound a bawd attained honour.

नानिवेद्य प्रकुर्वीत भर्तुः किंचिद् अपि स्वयम् ।
कार्यम् आपत्-प्रतीकाराद् अन्यत्र जगती-पते ॥ ९० ॥
nānivedya
prakurvīta bhartuḥ kiṃcid api svayam |
kāryam
āpat-pratīkārād anyatra jagatī-pate || 2.90 ||
Without informing the
master one should not carryout any act ; except
those which are intended to save the king from misfortune.
कमण्डलूपमो ऽमात्यस् तनु-त्यागी बहु-ग्रहः ।
नृपते किङ्क्षणो मूर्खो दरिद्रः किंवराटकः ॥ ९१ ॥
kamaṇḍalūpamo
'mātyas tanu-tyāgī bahu-grahaḥ |
nṛpate kiṅkṣaṇo mūrkho daridraḥ kiṃvarāṭakaḥ || 2.91 ||
A minister is like an
ascetic’s gourd, lets out little and takes much; one who talks lightly of a moment remains
a fool and one who takes a cowrie( a low value coin) lightly remains poor.
