PEACE-सन्धिः-SANDHIH-1 (Hitopadesa)

 SUBHASHITHANI:590

वृत्ते महति सङ्ग्रामे राज्ञोर् निहत-सेनयोः
स्थेयाभ्यां गृध्र-चक्राभ्यां वाचा सन्धिः कृतं क्षणत्

vṛtte mahati saṅgrāme rājñor nihata-senayoḥ |
stheyābhyāṃ gṛdhra-cakrābhyāṃ vācā sandhiḥ kṛtaṃ kṣaṇat || 4.1 ||

With the armies having been annihilated while the two kings were on war, a peace was arrived at instantly by a conference of two arbitrators, the vulture and the Chakravaha.

अपराधः दैवस्य पुनर् मन्त्रिणाम् अयम्
कार्यं सुचरितं क्वापि दैव-योगाद् विनश्यति

aparādhaḥ sa daivasya na punar mantriṇām ayam |
kāryaṃ sucaritaṃ kvāpi daiva-yogād vinaśyati ||4. 2 ||

One cannot blame the counsellors, for it is due to destiny; Even well-planned strategy is spoilt through destiny.

विषमां हि दशां प्राप्य दैवं गर्हयते नरः
आत्मनः कर्म-दोषांश् नैव जानात्य् अपण्डितः

viṣamāṃ hi daśāṃ prāpya daivaṃ garhayate naraḥ |
ātmanaḥ karma-doṣāṃś ca naiva jānāty apaṇḍitaḥ || 4.3 ||

When faced with adversity men tend to blame it on destiny. Fools never accept their own faults for any failure.

सुहृदां हित-कामानां यो वाक्यं नाभिनन्दति
कूर्म इव दुर्बुद्धिः काष्ठाद् भ्रष्टो विनश्यति

suhṛdāṃ hita-kāmānāṃ yo vākyaṃ nābhinandati |
sa kūrma iva durbuddhiḥ kāṣṭhād bhraṣṭo vinaśyati || 4.4 ||

One who does not heed to the wise counsel of well-meaning friends perishes, like the foolish turtle which fell from the stick and died.

रक्षितव्यं सदा वाक्यं वाक्याद् भवति नाशनम्
हंसाभ्यां नीयमानस्य कूर्मस्य पतनं यथा

rakṣitavyaṃ sadā vākyaṃ vākyād bhavati nāśanam |
haṃsābhyāṃ nīyamānasya kūrmasya patanaṃ yathā ||4. 5 ||

One should always control his speech, for speech can lead to destruction. A turtle fell from the stick and lost its life trying to speak ignoring his friends’ advice.

ஆக்கமுங் கேடும் அதனால் வருதலால்
காத்தோம்பல் சொல்லின்கட் சோர்வு.I குறள் 642
Since gain and loss in life on speech depend,
From careless slip in speech thyself defend.

अनागत-विधाता प्रत्युत्पन्न-मतिस् तथा
द्वाव् एव सुखम् एधेते यद्-भविष्यो विनश्यति

anāgata-vidhātā ca pratyutpanna-matis tathā |
dvāv eva sukham edhete yad-bhaviṣyo vinaśyati ||4. 6 ||

Of the three fishes, ‘acting before the arrival of fate’ and ‘ready witted’ escaped and lived happily, while the third ‘let me act when it comes’ perished.

A life that does not guard against faults
Is a heap of straw before fire.

उत्पन्नाम् आपदं यस् तु समाधत्ते बुद्धिमान्
वणिजो भार्यया जारः प्रत्यक्षे निह्नुतो यथा

utpannām āpadaṃ yas tu samādhatte sa buddhimān |

vaṇijo bhāryayā jāraḥ pratyakṣe nihnuto yathā || 4.7 ||

One who can find a remedy on the spot as trouble arises is wise; just as merchant’s wife disowned her paramour before his face.

स्त्रीणाम् अप्रियः कश्चित् प्रियो वापि विद्यते
गावस् तृणम् इवारण्ये प्रार्थयन्ते नवं नवम्

na strīṇām apriyaḥ kaścit priyo vāpi na vidyate |
gāvas tṛṇam ivāraṇye prārthayante navaṃ navam || 4.8 ||

For women there is no one either  agreeable or disagreeable ; as cows are always looking for new pastures.
