āhāro
dviguṇaḥ strīṇāṃ buddhis tāsāṃ catur-guṇā |
ṣaḍ-guṇo vyavasāyaś ca kāmāś cāṣṭaguṇaḥ smṛtaḥ || 4.9 ||
It is said that the food
of women is two fold, intelligence is four fold, energy six fold, passion eight
fold ( of that of men ).
yad
abhāvi na tad bhāvi bhāvi cen na tad anyathā |
iti cintā-viṣa-ghno 'yam agadaḥ kiṃ na pīyate || 4.10 ||
Whatever is not to be will
never be, what ever is to be it will never be otherwise than as ordained; contemplating
on this medicine as an anti-dote for anxiety why are not people drinking this?
Kulasekara azhwar exhibits similar sentiments in an excellent sloka in ‘Mukunda
Mala’
O Ananta, Vaikuṇṭha, Mukunda, Kṛṣṇa, Govinda,
Dāmodara, Mādhava! Although all people can address You, still they remain
silent. Just see how eager they are for their own peril! ( people refuse to take this tonic)
upāyaṃ
cintayet prājño hy apāyam api cintayet |
paśyato baka-mūrkhasya nakulair bhakṣitāḥ sutāḥ || 4.11 ||
Wise men when formulating
a strategy should also think of the possible dangers. The young ones of a
foolish crane was eaten by mungooses, right before its eyes.
praṇayād
upakārād vā yo viśvasiti śatruṣu |
sa supta iva vṛkṣāgrāt patitaḥ pratibudhyate || 4.12 ||
One who places trust in an
enemy either due to respect shown or help rendered wakes up only after falling
down like one fast asleep on a treetop.
( this quote is mentioned in both Ramayana and Mahabharatam )
kṛta-kṛtyasya
bhṛtyasya kṛtaṃ naiva praṇāśayet |
phalena manasā vācā dṛṣṭyā cainaṃ praharṣayet || 4.13 ||
One should not forget the
good deeds of a loyal servant; he should be gratified by rewards, with the
mind, words, and looks.
avicārayato
yukti-kathanaṃ tuṣa-khaṇḍanam |
nīceṣūpakṛtaṃ rājan bālukāsv iva mūtritam || 4.14 ||
Offering advice to an
inconsiderate is like pounding chaff(useless); a favour done to the undeserving
is like an impression on the sands.
nīcaḥ
ślāghya-padaṃ prāpya svāminaṃ hantum icchati |
mūṣiko vyāghratāṃ prāpya muniṃ hantuṃ gato yathā || 4.15 ||
A mean fellow, having
obtained a position of dignity, tries to kill the master; as the mouse changed
to become a tiger tried to swallow the sage.
