He is a
true friend who does not forsake us in time of need, misfortune, famine, or
war, in a king’s court, or at the crematorium (smasana).

Where are those kings gone
who ruled the world, with their splendid armies, body-guards, equipages, of
whose departure the earth, even now, stands a witness?

Death is certain for one
who has been born, and rebirth is inevitable for one who has died. One may die today or
after hundreds of years, but death is sure for every living entity.

samāgamāḥ sāpagamāḥ sarvam utpādi bhaṅguram || 4.71 ||
The body is liable for
decay, prosperity is succeeded by adversity, unions are followed by separations,
whatever is created is fragile.

āmakumbha ivāmbhaḥ-stho viśīrṇaḥ san vibhāṣyate || 4.72 ||
The decaying of this body
every moment is not perceived; when an unbaked pot is put in water, when
dissolved, the fact is discovered.
आसन्नतरतामेति मृत्युर् जन्तोर् दिने दिने ।
आघातं नीयमानस्य वध्यस्येव पदे पदे ॥ ७३ ॥
āsannataratāmeti
mṛtyur jantor dine dine |
āghātaṃ nīyamānasya vadhyasyeva pade pade || 4.73 ||
Death approaches nearer to
creatures, day by day; just as it does to a man at every step who is being led
to the gallows.
अनित्यं यौवनं रूपं जीवितं द्रव्य-सञ्चयः ।
ऐश्वर्यं प्रिय-संवासो मुह्येत् तत्र न पण्डितः ॥ ७४ ॥

aiśvaryaṃ priya-saṃvāso muhyet tatra na paṇḍitaḥ || 4.74 ||
Impermanent are youth and
beauty, all the wealth, association of those whom we love, and even life
itself ; the wise therefore are not fooled by it.
