PEACE-सन्धिः-SANDHIH-7 (Hitopadesa)

 SUBHASHITHANI:596

दुर्भिक्ष-व्यसनी चैव स्वयम् एव विषीदति
बल-व्यसन-सक्तस्य योद्धुं शक्तिर् जायते ४९

durbhikṣa-vyasanī caiva svayam eva viṣīdati |
bala-vyasana-saktasya yoddhuṃ śaktir na jāyate || 4.49 ||

One whose country is suffering from famine sinks of himself; one will not able to fight a war whose army is in a state of disaffection.

अदेश-स्थो हि रिपुणा स्वल्पकेनापि हन्यते
ग्राहो ऽल्पीयान् अपि जले जलेन्द्रम् अपि कर्षति ५०
adeśa-stho hi ripuṇā svalpakenāpi hanyate |
grāho 'lpīyān api jale jalendram api karṣati || 4.50 ||
Even a weak man can destroy a stronger one when he is out of his place; an alligator, even though smaller, when in water can drag an elephant.

நெடும்புனலுள் வெல்லும் முதலை அடும்புனலின்
நீங்கின் அதனைப் பிற.- Thirukkural 495
In deep water, a crocodile will conquer (all other animals); but if it leaves the water, other animals will conquer it.

बहु-शत्रुस् तु सन्त्रस्तः श्येन-मध्ये कपोतवत्
येनैव गच्छति पथा तेनैवाशु विपद्यते ५१

bahu-śatrus tu santrastaḥ śyena-madhye kapotavat |
yenaiva gacchati pathā tenaivāśu vipadyate || 4.51 ||

One who has many enemies is scared like a pigeon amongst hawks; he is beset with danger where ever he goes.

अकाल-युक्त-सैन्यस् तु हन्यते काल-योधिना
कौशिकेन हत-ज्योतिर् निशीथ इव वायसः ५२

akāla-yukta-sainyas tu hanyate kāla-yodhinā |
kauśikena hata-jyotir niśītha iva vāyasaḥ || 4.52 ||

He who arrays his army at inappropriate time suffers defeat at the hands of one who fights at the right time; as a crow is killed by an owl during darkness of night.

பகல்வெல்லும் கூகையைக் காக்கை இகல்வெல்லும்
வேந்தர்க்கு வேண்டும் பொழுது.-Thirukkural 481
A crow will conquer owl in broad daylight;
The king that foes would crush, needs fitting time to fight.

सत्य-धर्म-व्यपेतेन सन्दध्यान् कदाचन
सन्धितो ऽप्य् असाधुत्वाद् अचिराद् याति विक्रियाम् ५३

satya-dharma-vyapetena sandadhyān na kadācana |
sa sandhito 'py asādhutvād acirād yāti vikriyām ||4.53 ||

One should never form an alliance with someone who does not follow truth and righteousness; in spite of forming an alliance, because of his inherent nature, soon will betray.
