PEACE-सन्धिः-SANDHIH-6 (Hitopadesa)

 SUBHASHITHANI:595

बालस्याल्प-प्रभावत्वान् लोको योद्धुम् इच्छति
युद्धायुद्ध-फलं यस्माज् ज्ञातुं शक्तो बालिशः ४०

bālasyālpa-prabhāvatvān na loko yoddhum icchati |
yuddhāyuddha-phalaṃ yasmāj jñātuṃ śakto na bāliśaḥ || 4.40 ||

World is not ready to fight for a child, because of his limited understanding; a young boy cannot distinguish between the advantage or otherwise of fighting a battle.

उत्साह-शक्ति-हीनत्वाद् वृद्धो दीर्घामयस् तथा
स्वैर् एव परिभूयेते द्वाव् अप्य् एताव् असंशयम् ४१
utsāha-śakti-hīnatvād vṛddho dīrghāmayas tathā |
svair eva paribhūyete dvāv apy etāv asaṃśayam || 4.41 ||
Devoid of enthusiasm and energy an old man and a chronic sick person are over powered, undoubtedly, by their own men.

सुख-च्छेद्यो हि भवति सर्व-ज्ञाति-बहिष्कृतः
एवैनं विनिघ्नन्ति ज्ञातयस् त्व् आत्म-सात्कृताः ४२
sukha-cchedyo hi bhavati sarva-jñāti-bahiṣkṛtaḥ |
ta evainaṃ vinighnanti jñātayas tv ātma-sātkṛtāḥ || 4.42 ||
One who has been disowned by his own kinsman is easily destroyed; the very kinsman kill him, after uprooting him.

भीरुर् युद्ध-परित्यागात् स्वयम् एव प्रणश्यति
तथैव भीरु-पुरुषः सङ्ग्रामे तैर् विमुच्यते ४३

bhīrur yuddha-parityāgāt svayam eva praṇaśyati |
tathaiva bhīru-puruṣaḥ saṅgrāme tair vimucyate || 4.43 ||

The coward fleeing from the battle field destroys himself; similarly, one with cowardly troops is deserted by them in battle.

लुब्धस्यासंविभागित्वान् युध्यन्तेऽनुजीविनः
लुब्धानुजीवी तैर् एव दान-भिन्नैर् निहन्यते ४४

lubdhasyāsaṃvibhāgitvān na yudhyante'nujīvinaḥ |
lubdhānujīvī tair eva dāna-bhinnair nihanyate || 4.44 ||

The followers of a greedy king do not fight through non distribution of the spoil by the king; not only that they kill the king for not having shared the gifts.

सन्त्य् अज्यते प्रकृतिभिर् विरक्त-प्रकृतिर् युधि
सुखाभियोज्यो भवति विषयेव् अतिसक्तिमान् ४५

santy ajyate prakṛtibhir virakta-prakṛtir yudhi |

sukhābhiyojyo bhavati viṣayev atisaktimān || 4.45 ||

One whose supporters are  disaffected desert him in battle; king who is excessively after sensual enjoyments is easily over powered.

अनेक-चित्त-मन्त्रस् तु द्वेष्यो भवति मन्त्रिणाम्
अनवस्थित-चित्तत्वात् कर्यतः उपेक्ष्यते ४६

aneka-citta-mantras tu dveṣyo bhavati mantriṇām |
anavasthita-cittatvāt karyataḥ sa upekṣyate || 4.46 ||

One who has a wavering mind to counsels is disliked by ministers; by the fickleness of his mind ministers desert him in an emergency.

सदाधर्म-बलीयस्त्वाद् देव ब्राह्मण-निन्दकः
विशीर्यते स्वयं ह्य् एष दैवोपहतकस् तथा ४७

sadādharma-balīyastvād deva brāhmaṇa-nindakaḥ |
viśīryate svayaṃ hy eṣa daivopahatakas tathā || 4.47 ||

By the sheer force of dharma one who despises devas and brahmanas fades away by himself; so also, one deserted by fate.

सम्पत्तेश् विपत्तेश् दैवम् एव हि कारणम्
इति दैवपरो ध्यायन्न् आत्मना विचेष्टते ४८

sampatteś ca vipatteś ca daivam eva hi kāraṇam |
iti daivaparo dhyāyann ātmanā na viceṣṭate || 4.48 ||

A fatalist considers that prosperity and adversity are decided by providence and reflecting thus, he does not exert himself.
