ताभिर् विश्वासितश् चासौ म्रियते चित्रकर्णवत् ॥ ५९ ॥
matir dolāyate satyaṃ satām api khaloktibhiḥ |
tābhir viśvāsitaś cāsau mriyate citrakarṇavat || 4.59 ||
त्यजेत् क्षुधार्ता महिला स्वपुत्रं
खादेत् क्षुधार्ता भुजगी स्वमण्डम् ।
बुभुक्षितः किं न करोति पापं
क्षीणा नरा निष्करुणा भवन्ति ॥ ६० ॥
tyajet
kṣudhārtā mahilā svaputraṃ
khādet
kṣudhārtā bhujagī svamaṇḍam |
bubhukṣitaḥ kiṃ na karoti pāpaṃ
kṣīṇā
narā niṣkaruṇā bhavanti || 4.60 ||
Starving mother might leave her own son, starving snake might
eat her own eggs, what sin can a starved not do? People, who are helpless, get
merciless when its a question of life and death for them.
मत्तः प्रमत्तश् चोन्मत्तः श्रान्तः क्रुद्धो बुभुक्षितः ।
लुब्धो भीरुस् त्वरा-युक्तः कामुकश् च न धर्म-वित् ॥ ६१ ॥
mattaḥ
pramattaś conmattaḥ śrāntaḥ kruddho bubhukṣitaḥ |
lubdho bhīrus tvarā-yuktaḥ kāmukaś ca na
dharma-vit || 4.61 ||
A drunkard, callous, insane,
distressed, always angry, hungry, covetous, coward, hasty, and lustful - are not mindful
of morality.
न भूत-दानं न सुवर्ण-दानं
न गो-प्रदानं न तथान्न-दानम् ।
यथा वदन्तीह महा-प्रदानं
सर्वेषु दानेष्व् अभय-प्रदानम् ॥ ६२ ॥
na bhūta-dānaṃ
na suvarṇa-dānaṃ
na
go-pradānaṃ na tathānna-dānam |
yathā vadantīha mahā-pradānaṃ
sarveṣu
dāneṣv abhaya-pradānam || 4.62 ||
Neither the gift of land, nor
gift of gold, nor gift of a cow, nor gift of food, only the gift of refuge to
the people in danger is considered great by noble persons.
सर्व-काम-समृद्धस्य अश्वमेधस्य यत् फलम् ।
तत्-फलं लभते सम्यग् रक्षिते शरणागते ॥ ६३ ॥
sarva-kāma-samṛddhasya
aśvamedhasya yat phalam |
tat-phalaṃ labhate samyag rakṣite śaraṇāgate || 4.63 ||
The benefits of performing
an asvamedha sacrifice, fulfilling of all desires, that is obtained in full by
protecting one who seeks your refuge.
स्वामि-मूला भवन्त्य् एव सर्वाः प्रकृतयः खलु ।
समूलेष्व् अपि वृक्षेषु प्रयत्नः सफलो नृणाम् ॥ ६४ ॥
svāmi-mūlā bhavanty eva
sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ khalu |
samūleṣv api vṛkṣeṣu prayatnaḥ
saphalo nṛṇām || 4.64 ||
All subjects have the king
as their chief supporter (lit:root); By protecting the root of the tree alone
men get the fruits of their efforts.
लोको वहति किं राजन् न मूर्ध्ना दग्धुम् इन्धनम् ।
क्षालयन्त्य् अपि वृक्षाङ्घ्रिं नदी-वेला निकृन्तति ॥ ६५ ॥
loko
vahati kiṃ rājan na mūrdhnā dagdhum indhanam |
kṣālayanty api vṛkṣāṅghriṃ nadī-velā nikṛntati || 4.65 ||
O! king, do not people
carry fire-wood on their head to burn? The current of a river, while watering, cuts
the root of the tree.
( This is an answer by the
minister to the king who asked: ‘How did you manage to stay amidst the enemies?
)
स्कन्धेनापि वहेच् छत्रून् कार्यम् आसाद्य बुद्धिमान् ।
यथा वृद्धेन सर्पेण मण्डूका विनिपातिताः ॥ ६६ ॥
skandhenāpi
vahec chatrūn kāryam āsādya buddhimān |
yathā vṛddhena sarpeṇa maṇḍūkā vinipātitāḥ || 4.66 ||
One to achieve his objective
might even carry his enemy on his shoulders; as the frogs were destroyed by the
old serpent.
