PEACE-सन्धिः-SANDHIH-11(Hitopadesa)

 SUBHASHITHANI:601

yathā kāṣṭhaṃ ca kāṣṭhaṃ ca sameyātāṃ mahodadhau |
sametya ca vyapeyātāṃ tadvad bhūta-samāgamaḥ || 4.75 ||

Just as two pieces of wood come together in the great ocean (by the stroke of a wave) and after coming together separate, so does the association of living beings.

yathā hi pathikaḥ kaścic chāyām āśritya tiṣṭhati |
viśramya ca punar gacched tadvad bhūta-samāgamaḥ || 4.76 ||
As a certain traveller remains under a shade (of some tree) and having refreshed himself again goes on (his journey), so does the company of living beings.

pañcabhir nirmite dehe pañcatvaṃ ca punar gate |
svāṃ svāṃ yonim anuprāpte tatra kā paridevanā || 4.77 ||

The body which is made up of the five elements goes back to the respective five elements where is the cause for wailing?

yāvataḥ kurute jantuḥ sambandhān manasaḥ priyān |
tāvanto 'sya nikhanyante hṛdaye śoka-śaṅkavaḥ || 4.78 ||

A living being, as many associations it has dear to the soul, so  many thorns of grief it is planting in his heart.

Whatever thing, a man has renounced, by that thing; he cannot suffer pain.

nāyam atyanta-saṃvāso labhyate yena kenacit |
api svena śarīreṇa kim utānyena kenacit || 4.79 ||

The body obtained by any one is not a permanent dwelling; how much less,of other people’s body!

saṃyogo hi viyogasya saṃsūcayati sambhavam |
anatikramaṇīyasya janma mṛtyor ivāgamam || 4.80 ||

Union hints at the possibility of separation; just as birth indicates the approach of  inevitable death.

āpāta-ramaṇīyānāṃ saṃyogānāṃ priyaiḥ saha |
apathyānām ivānnānāṃ pariṇāmo hi dāruṇaḥ || 4.81 ||

Initially pleasant union with delightful objects invariably ends with distress; like eating of unwholesome foods.

vrajanti na nivartante srotāṃsi saritāṃ yathā |
āyur ādāya martyānāṃ tathā rātry-ahanī sadā || 4.82 ||

As the river streams flow on and not return; as also day and night; day proceeds, taking away with them the lives of mortal.

Time, which shows itself (to the ignorant) as if it were something (real) is in the estimation of the wise (only) a saw which cuts down life.
