THE THREE DEVIS- DURGA,LAKSHMI,SARASVATI

SUBHASHITHANI: 150

These, as is evident, are not three distinct Devis, but the one formless Devi worshipped in three different forms. Durga Puja or Navaratri is the festive occasion of the 'nine-days worship of Maha-Kaali, Maha-Lakshmi and Maha-Sarasvati,' the Divinity of the Universe adored in three ways.
PRAYER TO SRI DURGA

O Mother Durga! When Thou art merely remembered, you  remove  all fears and afflictions of entire world.
And contemplated by the healthy people, you confer them with great intellect.
O Great Mother! O Dispeller of afflictions of sorrow, fear and poverty! No one else is there in the world other than Thee who is compassionate towards others to do their good.

O Great MahaLakshmi! I pay obeisances to thee. Thou art the daughter of Milk Ocean, the Lord of Oceans. Thou art the Lord of abode of Shree Ranga Narayana and all the Devas become like Thy subservient servants to serve Thee alone. Thou alone art the light guiding us in this world.
By obtaining the side glances of eyes of Shree Vishnu, Thou hast created Brahma, Indra and Shiva.
Salutations to Thee, O Ocean-born! Thou art the beloved of Mukunda, and art the Mother of all the three worlds.

Who is Always Adored by Lord Brahma, Lord Acyuta (Lord Vishnu), Lord Shankara and Other Devas,
O Goddess Saraswati, Protect me and Remove my Ignorance completely.

No deeds of ill, misled by base desire,
Do they, whose souls to other joys aspire.

THIRST-GREED- DEEP DESIRE -TRISHNAA ( तृष्णा )

SUBHASHITHANI:148

There is no austerity  like  attaining peace, There is no happiness like satisfaction, there is no disease like desire, and there is no dharma like mercy.

Affliction is not known where no desires abide;
Where these are, endless rises sorrow's tide.

There is no ritual (vidhi) that is more noble than giving (dAna); there is no worse enemy than greed. There is no better ornament than good character; there is no better wealth than contentment (santoSha).

Face covered with wrinkles, the head painted white with gray hair, the limbs feeble, and yet Desire alone stays youthful.

We have not enjoyed the pleasures, but we have been preyed upon (by the destructive influence of time); we have not undergone austerities, but we have been harassed (by worldly cases); time has not lapsed, but the lease of our life; our greed has not decayed, but we have.

I dug up the earth expecting to find a treasure; smelted ores found in mountains; crossed the lord of rivers; assiduously propitiated kings; passed several nights in the cremation sites solely intent upon obtaining incantations; (but after all) I have not obtained even a cowrie(a form of money used in olden days ). Leave me now, thou Greed.

Extreme hankering should be avoided without rejecting desire itself. One should steadily enjoy self-earned wealth in moderation.

Chanakya Niti

To a king, anger is like death [warrant] and desire is like the river [Vaitarana] leading to it. Knowledge, however, is like the wish fulfilling cow (Kamadhenu) to him and contentment is the highest paradise [Nandanavanam].

"Know that Rajas is essentially attachment; it is the source of craving and passion." "O Son of Kunti! It binds the embodied Spirit with attachment to works."
(Here, the word Rāga refers to attachment, and Trishna, refers to the craving for what is unattained. )

We are content to wear tree-barks for clothes, and you with rich dresses; but the contentment is alike, and the difference is not significant. He whose desires are numerous is indeed poor. If contentment is in the mind, then who is rich or poor?

Even to hear of It is not available to many; many having heard of It cannot yet comprehend. Wonderful is Its teacher and (equally) talented is Its pupil. Wonderful indeed is he who comprehends It taught by a talented preceptor.

A disciple attains prominence by carrying out the orders of his preceptors, given with the intention of illuminating his intellect- however harsh they might be. Even though  a gem found in a mine might be precious, it needs to undergo the rigors of a grindstone, before it adorns the crown of monarchs.

Just as ground water is found by consistently digging the earth with a spade (digging a well), similarly knowledge is acquired from a teacher by showing reverence and obedience to the teacher .
The disciple shines due to the grace of the teacher; the teacher is glorified by the qualities of the student; The institute shines because of both of them; A city gains prominence because of great institutions.
Living by moral code , scholarship, power of communication, love for the student , these are the four qualities of a good teacher.
Intense desire for learning, following guru's footsteps, power of understanding, single pointed concentration, desire for greatness, these are the five qualities of a good student.
One who is incapable of crossing himself, how can he help save others? Therefore, an intelligent student should keep away from such persons and only approach a learned Guru.

Even in times of terrible distress a teacher of scriptures should rather die with his knowledge than sow it in barren soil. The teacher should see whether the disciple is fit enough to learn the scriptures.

VIRTUES-GUNAAH- ( गुणा: )

SUBHASHITHANI:145
He only lives who possesses virtues and righteousness; he who doesn't possess these  virtues leads a futile life.
guNA aguNa jneShu guNA bhavanti   te nirguNam prApya bhavanti doShAH ।
aasvAdya toyAH prabhavanti nadyaH   samudram aasAdya bhavanti apeyaaH ॥

With virtuous persons, virtues remain virtues. On reaching a non-virtuous person, they become faults. (Just like) a river flowing with sweet water, becomes salty on reaching ocean.
guNavantah klishyante praayeNa bhavanti nirguNaaha sukhinah
bandhamaayanti shukaaha yatheShtsanchaariNah kaakaaha

Many a times  a person with good virtues has to undergo  difficulties and the one possessing no qualities is happier. A parrot (having beautiful plumage and the ability to mime) is caged while a crow ,with no special qualities,  flies free!
naatyanta guNavat kimchit na chaapyatyantanirguNam

There is no work which is good in all respects. There is no work bad in all respects.
Both good and bad points are present in every work
Aaropyate shilaa shaile yatnen mahata tatha.
Patyate tu kshena-dhastathatma guna doshayoh.
It requires mighty effort to carry a big rock (boulder) from the bottom of a mountain to its top, but to bring it downwards takes very little time.  Likewise is the case with virtues and defects in a person.

.Na dhanee na bali naapi shooro na gunawaanapi. Tathaa bhaati yathaa vaktaa sabhayaam pikavadvane.
A person may not be very rich, powerful and even virtuous, but if he is an orator he shows his eminence in an assembly of persons like a cuckoo in a forest.

Yadi santi gunaah pumsaam vikasantyeva kevalam.
nahi kastoorikamodah shapathena vibhavyate.

If there are good qualities in a person they definitely grow further like the strong fragrance of 'Kasturi' which is clearly distinguishable and can not be concealed simply by swearing (that there is no fragrance).
Sarvatra deshe gunawaan shobhate prathitah narah. manih sheershe gale baahou yatra kutra mapi shobhate.
A knowledgeable and virtuous person becomes a celebrity and is adored  in all Countries, just as a precious stone worn over head, neck, arms and even anywhere on the body looks beautiful and  is adored.

"மன்னவனும் நீயோ வளநாடும் உன்னதோ
உன்னை அறிந்தோ தமிழை ஓதினேன்– என்னை

षड् गुणाः पुरुषेणेह त्यक्तव्या न कदाचन I
सत्यं दानम् अनालस्यम् अनुसूया क्षमा धृतिः II
Shad gunaah purusheneha tyaktavyaa na kadaachanh
Satyam daanam anaalasyam anusuya kshmaa dhritih.
A righteous person should never give up these six qualities in him, namely (i) adhering to truth (ii) generosity (iii) alertness )iv) free from jealousy (v) forgiveness and (vi)firmness with patience.

Here,O Uddhava, I have fully answered all your questions.Well, what is the use of dilating on the characteristics of Guna and Dosha ? Seeing the difference between the two is a defect, and to be free from both is merit.
