THE SEA,OCEAN- SAMUDRAH, SAAGARAH, (समुद्रः , सागरः ) )

SUBHASHITHANI: 135
यथा नद्यः स्यन्दमानाः समुद्रेऽ स्तं गच्छन्ति नामरूपे विहाय ।A

तथा विद्वान् नामरूपाद्विमुक्तः परात्परं पुरुषमुपैति दिव्यम् ॥ ८॥

yathaa nadyaH syandamaanaaH samudre.a

staM gachchhanti naamaruupe vihaaya
tathaa vidvaan.h naamaruupaadvimuktaH
paraatparaM purushhamupaiti divyam.h 8 Mundaka Upanisad
As rivers, flowing down, become indistinguishable on reaching the sea by giving up their names and forms, so also the illumined soul, having become freed from name and form, reaches the self-effulgent Purusha that is higher than the high (Maya).
பயன்தூக்கார் செய்த உதவி நயன்தூக்கின்
நன்மை கடலின் பெரிது.  Kural-103
Kindness shown by those who weigh not what the return may be:
When you ponder right its merit, 'Tis vaster than the sea.
नाम्भोधिरर्थितामेति सदाम्भोभिश्च पूर्यते | 

आत्मा तु पात्रतां नेय: पात्रमायान्ति संपद: ||   विदुरनीति

An ocean never begs (for water), yet it is always full of water. If one makes oneself worthy, riches come to that worthy person by themselves (with their own accord).
वने रणे शत्रुजलाग्निमध्ये महार्णवे पर्वतमस्तके वा | 

सुप्तं प्रमत्तं विषमस्थितं वा रक्षन्ति पुण्यानि पुरा कॄतानि || Niti satakam

Whether one is in a battle field or in a forest ,whether one is in the midst of enemies , water or fire; in the sea or on a mountain peak ;in slumber or in senselessness- in whatever plight a man may be ,it his past meritorious deeds that really protect him.

नाग्निस्तृप्यति काष्ठानां नापगानां महोदधिः ।

नान्तकः सर्वभूतानां न पुंसां वामलोचना ॥ 

Fire can never be satisfied by firewood, the river waters can never fulfill the sea, Yama can never be satisfied by all the beings, and a man is never fully satisfied by woman .

यथा काष्ठं च काष्ठं च समेयातां महोदधौ  ।

समेत्य व्यपेयातां तद्वद् भूतसमागमः  ॥ १५ ॥
Coming together of living beings is like the pieces of wood
that come together in the ocean and having come together, separate.

गुणा गुणज्ञेषु गुणा भवन्ति

ते निर्गुणं प्राप्य भवन्ति दोषाः ।
आस्वादुतोयाः प्रभवन्ति नद्यः
समुद्रम् आसाद्य भवन्त्यपेयाः ॥४६॥

 With virtuous persons, virtues remain virtues. On reaching a non-virtuous person, they become faults. (Just like) a river flowing with sweet water, becomes salty on reaching ocean.

संग्रहैकपरः प्रायः समुद्रोऽपि रसातले ।

दातारं जलदं पश्य गर्जन्तं भुवनोपरि ॥
Sangrahekaparah praayah samudropi rasaatale
Daataaram jaladam pashya garjantam bhuwanopari.
One who collects will always be at the bottom – like the ocean the collector of gems and precious stones is condemned to the rasatala world. On the other hand the one who gives it to others will always be on top – like the clouds that roar on top of the world.

दाता लघुरपि सेव्यो भवति न कृपणो महानपि समृद्ध्या ।
कूपोऽतः स्वादुजलः प्रीत्यै लोकस्य न समुद्रः ॥
Even if a generous person is poor, he is to be treated with respect. A miser deserves no respect even if he is rich and prosperous. People like water from a small well but not from the mighty ocean.

आकाशात् पतितं तोयं यथा गच्छति सागरम् |
सर्वदेवनमस्कार: केशवं प्रति गच्छति ||

Just as the rain water that falls on the earth travels through various rivers and ultimately reaches the sea - In the same way offerings offered to various Gods ultimately reaches only one God.

आपूर्यमाणमचलप्रातिष्ठं

समुद्रमाप: प्राविशन्ति यद्वत् |
तद्वत् कामा यं प्राविशन्ति सर्वे

स शान्तिमाप्नोति न कामकामी ||Bhagavad gita ch-2.70

Just as the ocean remains undisturbed by the incessant flow of waters from rivers merging into it, likewise the sage who is unmoved despite the flow of desirable objects all around him attains peace, and not the person who strives to satisfy desires.
