PHALAM-फलं-FRUIT,RESULT

 SUBHASHITHANI:296

Subhashitha sangraha
Yo na vetti gunaanyasya na tam seveta panditah I
Na hi tasmaat phalam tasya sukrushtaa doosharaadiva II
A wise man must never serve a master who cannot value his qualities. Serving him will be like trying to cultivate on barren land. No matter how hard you plough the land and sow seeds, there will be no crop.

Pancha tantra

phala-hīna npa bhtyāḥ kulīnam api connatam |
santy ajyāny atra gacchanti śuka vkam ivāṇḍajāḥ || 163 ||

Even if the king belongs to a good family and considered great, if there is nothing to be gained from him, his servants leave him and go elsewhere, much like the birds leave a dry, fruitless tree, however big it may be.

( I am neither a political analyst nor have any political affiliation ; but I am not able to desist from mentioning how this subhashitha reflects the truth beautifully about people leaving or threatening to leave a particular political party in India )

vachastatra prayoktavyam yatra labhate phalam ।
sthAyI bhavati cha atyantam rAgah shuklapaTe yathA ॥
Speak only what is appropriate and which will yield results and has an enduring effect. Just like colour sticks better only on white cloth.

Nothing fructifies beforehand-neither the form, nor the family background, not even one's virtues, nor even the education, not also the painstaking service rendered to the community. It is the fortune of a person accrued by the performance of penance that yields fruits in due course, like the tree which yields fruits when it is time.

।2.63.7।।Ramayana
Gurulaaghavam arthaanaam aarambhe karmanaam phalam I
Dosham vaa yon a jaanaati na baala iti hochyate  II
He who, at the commencement of any action, does not foresee the good or evil consequences of his action is considered childish. ( Dasarata to Kausalya-  Dasarata killed a rishi putra by mistake using sabda vedi and was cursed to suffer putra sokham )

।2.63.9।।Ramayana
Without foreseeing the fruits of his action, he who runs after action only will regret at the time of fruition like the one who waters the palasa tree.

Chayam anyasya kurvanti tishtanti svayam aatape
Phalani api para arthaya vrukshah satpurusha iva
They provide shade for others while they stand in the heat.
Even the fruits they bear are for others, trees are really like great men.
Yatra naryastu pujyante ramante tatra devata
Yatraitaastu na pujyante sarvastatraphalah kriyaah ।।
Where women are honoured , divinity blossoms there, where they are dishonoured , all action remains unfruitful.

Pancha tantra

bhūmir mitra hiraya ca vigrahasya phala-trayam |
nāsty ekam api yady eṣāṃ na ta kuryāt kathañcana || 249 ||

Land, friend and riches – these three are the gains of war. If even one of these is not a potential gain, then one should not go to war with any one.

Pancha tantra
Prayatne samake kechideva syuh phalabhaginah
Kshirodamathanaddevairamrutam prapti nasuraih ॥241
When many people put in equal efforts, only a few reap the benefits.
In the churning of the ocean, only gods got the nectar and not the demons.

Shubham vapyashubham karma phalakalamapekshate
Sharadaiva phalatyashu shalirna surabhau kvachit ॥242
Results of auspicious or inauspicious work depend on the right time.
Paddy grows well in autumn and not in spring when flowers bloom.
Manu Smriti
If you plan to navigate through darkness (miseries) of the world with the help of a bad son, then you will meet with the same fate as if you tried to cross the ocean using a leaky boat .

Usareshu cha kshetreshu yathaa beejam hi nishphalam.
Upakaaropi neechaanaam kruto bhavati taadrushah.
Just as in a field with saline soil it is futile to sow seeds in it (as no crop can grow on it) in the same manner any favour or help rendered to mean and wicked persons also does
not produce any fruitful results.
SRI KRISHNAYA THUBHYAM NAMAH
PS: Srimad  Bhagavad Gita deals exhaustively about Karma and karma phala. Some of those fascinating slokas we will see in the next blog.
