SUBHASHITHANI:333
Vibhishana advised Ravana to return Sita devi to Rama. Annoyed to hear this advice, Ravana castigates him with harsh words. The following slokas from Ramayana are the utterances of Ravana to Vibhishana:
जानामि शीलम् ज्ञातीनाम् सर्व लोकेषु राक्षस |
हृष्यन्ति व्यसनेष्वेते ज्ञातीनाम् ज्ञातयः सदा ||Ramayana
Jaanaami
sheelam gyatheenaam sarva lokeshu rakshasa I
Hrushyanti
vyasaneshvete gyateenaam gyaatayah sadaa II
"O, demon! I know the conduct of kinsmen in all the worlds. Kinsmen, as a rule, always rejoice at the calamities of their own kinsmen" 6.16.3
प्रधानम् साधकम् वैद्यम् धर्म शीलम् च राक्षस |
ज्ञातयो ह्यनमन्यन्ते शूरम् परिभवन्ति च || ६-१६-४
Pradhaanam
saadhakam vaidhyam dharma sheelam cha rakshasa I
Gyaatayo
hyanamanyante shooram paribhavanti cha II
"O,
demon! The kinsmen indeed insult and even humiliate their kinsman, who is an
effective leader, a person of education and right conduct and a valiant
man." 6.16.4
नित्यम् अन्योन्य सम्हृष्टा व्यसनेष्वाततायिनः |
प्रच्चन्न हृदया घोरा ज्ञातयस् तु भय आवहाः || ६-१६-५
Nityam
anyonya samhrushtaa vyasaneshvaatataayinah I
Prachchanna
hrudayaa ghoraa gyaatayas tu bhaya aavahaah II
Feeling highly rejoiced in the misfortunes of one another , having secret designs and treacherous minds, kinsfolk are generally cruel and formidable. 6.16.5
घोराः स्वार्थप्रयुक्तास्तु ज्ञातयो नो भयावहाः || ६-१६-७
Naagnirna
anyaani shastraani na nah paashaa bhayaavahaah I
Ghoraah
svaarthapyayuktaastu gyaatayo no
bhayaavahaah II
Neither fire nor other arms ,again snares strike terror in to us; but those of our own kind , who are cruel and actuated by selfish interest are begetting fear to us.6.16.7
कृत्स्नाद् भयाज्ज्ञातिभयम् सुकष्टम् विदितम् च नः || ६-१६-८
Upaayamete
vakshyanti grahane naatrasamsayah I
Krusnaad
bhayad gyati bhayam sukashtam viditam cha nah II
"These
kinsmen will inform the strategy to our enemies to seize us. There is no doubt
about this.Nay, the perils from our own kinsmen known to us as the most formidable perils of all perils.6.16.8
विद्यते गोषु सम्पन्नम् विद्यते ज्ञातितो भयम् |
विद्यते स्त्रीषु चापल्यम् विद्यते ब्राह्मणे तप: || ६-१६-९
Vidhyate
goshu sampannam vidhyate gyaatito bhayam I
Vidhyate
streeshu chaapalyam vidhyate brahmane tapah II
"There
is wealth in cows. There is fear for kinsmen. There is fickleness in women.
There is austerity in Brahmins."6.16.9
ज्ञातयः स्नानपानाभ्यां वाक्यदानेन पण्डिताः।।Chanakya niti
svabhaavena hi tushyanti
devaah satpurushaa janaah |
jnaatayastvannapaanaabhyaam vaakyadaanena panditaah ||
Devas and sadhus
are by nature always contented and happy. Friends and relatives are happy
with dinner, Wise men are happy when they exchange pleasant words.
येषां चान्नानि भुञ्जीत ये च स्युः शरणागताः ॥१.२१४॥
Yesham cha annaani bhunjeeta ye cha syuh sharanaagatah II
The following should never be killed under any circumstances: A vedic
scholar, cows, women, children, and relatives; also those whose food you have
taken and those who have sought your refuge. Pancha tantra 1.214
अधनाद्हि निवर्तन्ते ज्ञातयः सुहृदो जनाः ।
अपुष्पादफलाद्वृक्षात् यथा सर्वे पतत्रिणः ॥४०॥
Apushpaat phalaat vrukshaat yatha sarve patatrinah II
Relatives and friends leave a person who is poor; just like birds desert trees devoid of fruits and flowers.
गतिरेका पतिर्नार्या द्वितीया गतिरात्मजः।
तृतीया ज्ञातयो राजंश्चतुर्थी नेह विद्यते।।Ramayana - 2.61.27
Truteeyaa gyaatayo rajan chaturthee neha vidyate II
O king for a woman the first refuge
is the husband, the second her son, the third her relatives and there is no
fourth alternative in this world.
