Damanaka goes on to explain who is fit to serve the king.
अनादिष्टोऽपि भूपस्य दृष्ट्वा हानिकरं च यः।
यतते तस्य नाशाय स भृत्योऽर्हो महीभुजाम्॥पञ्च_१.९६॥
anādiṣṭo 'pi bhūpasya dṛṣṭvā hānikaraṃ ca yaḥ |
yatate tasya nāśāya sa bhṛtyo 'rho mahībhujām || 96 ||
He who, without being told, tries to
prevent any harm that may occur to his king, he alone is fit to serve the king.
ताडितोऽपि दुरुक्तोऽपि दंडितोऽपि महीभुजा।
यो न चिंतयते पापं स भृत्योऽर्हो महीभुजाम्॥पञ्च_१.९७॥
tāḍito 'pi durukto 'pi daṇḍito 'pi mahībhujā |
yo na cintayate pāpaṃ sa bhṛtyo 'rho mahībhujām || 97
||
Though beaten, though rudely spoken to, though punished, the servant who
does not think ill of the master, is fit to serve the king.
न गर्वं कुरुते माने नापमाने च तप्यते।
स्वाकारं रक्षयेद् यस् तु स भृत्योऽर्हो महीभुजाम्॥पञ्च_१.९८॥
na garvaṃ kurute māne nāpamāne ca tapyate |
svākāraṃ rakṣayed yas tu sa bhṛtyo 'rho mahībhujām || 98 ||
The servant who does not feel excess
pride when praised, or sadness when rebuked, he who keeps his feelings to
himself, is alone fit to serve the king.
न क्षुधा पीड्यते यस् तु निद्रया न कदाचन।
न च शीतातपाद्यैश् च स भृत्योऽर्हो महीभुजाम्॥पञ्च_१.९९॥
na kṣudhā pīḍyate yas tu nidrayā na kadācana |
na ca śītātapādyaiś ca sa bhṛtyo 'rho mahībhujām || 99 ||
The servant who never gets affected by hunger or sleep; or cold or heat;
is fit to serve the king.
श्रुत्वा सांग्रामिकीं वार्तां भविष्यां स्वामिनं प्रति।
प्रसन्नास्यो भवेद् यस् तु स भृत्योऽर्हो महीभुजाम्॥पञ्च_१.१००॥
śrutvā sāṃgrāmikīṃ vārtāṃ bhaviṣyāṃ svāminaṃ prati |
prasannāsyo bhaved yas tu sa bhṛtyo 'rho mahībhujām || 100 ||
A servant who meets his master with a joyous countenance on hearing
about an ensuing battle is fit to serve a king.
नियोगसंस्थिते यस्मिन्स भृत्योऽर्हो महीभुजाम् ॥ १०१॥
sīmā vṛddhiṃ samāyāti śukla-pakṣa ivoḍurāṭ |
niyoga-saṃsthite yasmin sa bhṛtyo 'rho mahībhujām || 101 ||
After employing the servant if the borders of the kingdom extend more like the moon in the full moon phase , he is fit to serve the king.
स्थिते यस्मिन्स तु त्याज्यो भृत्यो राज्यं समीहता ॥ १०२॥
sīmā saṃkocam āyāti vahnau carma ivāhitam |
sthite yasmin sa tu tyājyo bhṛtyo rājyaṃ samīhatā || 102 ||
A king who is concerned about the welfare of his kingdom, should get rid off the servant whose stay causes the shrinking of the borders like leather put inside fire.
Damanaka then warned the king not to ignore thinking that he is just a fox :
कौशेयं कृमिजं सुवर्णमुपलाद्दूर्वापि गोरोमतः
काष्ठादग्निरहेः फणादपि मणिर्गोपित्ततो रोचना
प्राकाश्यं स्वगुणोदयेन गुणिनो गच्छन्ति किं जन्मना ॥ १०३॥
kauśeyaṃ kṛmijaṃ suvarṇam upalād durvāpi goromataḥ
paṅkāt tāmarasaṃ śaśāṅka udadher indīvaraṃ gomayāt |
kāṣṭhād agnir aheḥ phaṇād api maṇir go-pittato rocanā
prākāśyaṃ sva-guṇodayena guṇino gacchanti kiṃ janmanā || 103 ||Silk is obtained from a worm; gold from stone; ‘Rochand’ from cow’s bile;
lotus from mire; moon from the ocean; blue lotus from cow dung; fire from
the wood; gem from the snake’s hood; yellow pigment (gorochana) from the bile
of the cow…likewise, good men become known because of their virtues; what have
they to do with their origins.

paṅkāt tāmarasaṃ śaśāṅka udadher indīvaraṃ gomayāt |
