PANCHA TANTRA- SUBHASHITHANI-10

 SUBHASHITHANI:324

यो रणं शरणं तद्वन्मन्यते भयवर्जितः
प्रवासं स्वपुरावासं भवेद्राजवल्लभः ६२॥

Yo  raṇaṃ śaraṇaṃ tadvan manyate bhaya-varjitaḥ |
pravāsaṃ sva-purāvāsaṃ sa bhaved rāja-vallabhaḥ || 62 ||

He who is fearless and accepts the battle-field as a play ground and journey as his home-town will become dearer to the king.

करटक आह- अथ भवांस् तत्र गत्वा किं तावत् प्रथमं वक्ष्यति तत् तावद् उच्यताम्।
Karataka said : Well! After approaching the king how will you start the conversation?
Damanaka's reply follows:
उत्तरादुत्तरं वाक्यं वदतां संप्रजायते ।
सुवृष्टिगुणसम्पन्नाद्बीजाद्बीजमिवापरम् ॥ ६४॥

uttarād uttaraṃ vākyaṃ vadatāṃ samprajāyate |
suvṛṣṭi-guṇa-sampannād bījād bījam ivāparam || 64 ||
When people converse , one idea leads to another; the excellence of conversation depends on one's skill and thoughtfulness just as a fresh seed springs up from the old one when there has been good rains.
अपायसंदर्शनजां विपत्तिमुपायसंदर्शनजां च सिद्धिम् ।
मेधाविनो नीतिगुणप्रयुक्तां पुरः स्फुरन्तीमिव वर्णयन्ति ॥ ६५॥
apāya-sandarśanajāṃ vipattim upāya-sandarśanajāṃ ca siddhim |
medhāvino nīti-guṇa-prayuktāṃ puraḥ sphurantīm iva varṇayanti || 65 ||
Talented men depict, as flashing forth us failure that would result from impediments foreseen, and brought on by injudicious use of policy and success as resulting from expedients properly foreseen and the wise employment of policy.
एकेषां वाचि शुकवदन्येषां हृदि मूकवत् ।
हृदि वाचि तथान्येषां वल्गु वल्गन्ति सूक्तयः ॥ ६६॥

ekeṣāṃ vāci śukavad anyeṣāṃ hṛdi mūkavat |
hṛdi vāci tathānyeṣāṃ valgu valgantiu sūktayaḥ || 66 ||

Good words bristle charmingly in the speech of some as in the case of parrots, lie in the heart of some as in the case of the mute, while they bound beautifully both,in the speech and heart in some others.

Damanaka mentions that he had learned from his father that one should not open his mouth if the time is not favourable:

अप्राप्तकालं वचनं बृहस्पतिरपि ब्रुवन् ।
लभते बह्ववज्ञानमपमानं च पुष्कलम् ॥ ६७॥

aprāpta-kālaṃ vacanaṃ bṛhaspatir api bruvan |

labhate bahv-avajñānam apamānaṃ ca puṣkalam || 67 ||
Even if Brihaspati, the preceptor of gods utters untimely words, he has to face a lot insults and ridicules.

Karataka said:
दुराराध्या हि राजानः पर्वता इव सर्वदा।
व्यालाकीर्णाः सुविषमाः कठिना दुष्ट-सेविताः॥पञ्च_१.६८॥

durārādhyā hi rājāna parvatā iva sarvadā |
vy
ālākīrṇāḥ suviamāḥ kahinā duṣṭa-sevitāḥ || 68 ||

Kings are difficult to be pleased and are compared to mountains which are difficult to climb; Kings are surrounded by venomous people, are harsh mouthed and rude,are hard hearted like a rock, and always served by evil men.

भोगिनः कञ्चुकाविष्टाः कुटिलाः क्रूर-चेष्टिताः।
सुदुष्टा मंत्र-साध्याश् च राजानः पन्नगा इव॥पञ्च_१.६९॥

bhogina kañcukāviṣṭāḥ kuilāḥ krūra-ceṣṭitāḥ |

ṣṭā mantra-sādhyāś ca rājāna pannagā iva || 69 ||

Kings are like snakes : 1.Given to enjoyments, possessed of hoods (snake)-;2. clad in armour, covered with sloughs (snake);3. follows crooked policy, moves in a zig-zag way;4.are merciless, acting ferociously(snake); 5.easily prejudiced,extremely wicked; 6. won over by counsel, tamed by mantras( snakes).

द्वि-जिह्वाः क्रूर-कर्माणो निष्ठाश् छिद्रानुसारिणः।
दूरतोऽपि हि पश्यंति राजानो भुजगा इव॥पञ्च_१.७०॥

dvi-jihvāḥ krūra-karmāṇo 'niṣṭhāś chidrānusāria |

ūrato 'pi hi paśyanti rājāno bhujagā iva || 70 ||
Kings are like snakes: have two tongues, kings speak with double meaning; cruel in nature(both); snakes are disliked, kings are looked up with envy; snakes crawl in to holes, kings are ready to find faults; snakes can see far, kings know distant happenings through spies.

அகலாது அணுகாது தீக்காய்வார் போல்க
இகல்வேந்தர்ச் சேர்ந்தொழுகு வார்.-Thrikkural 691

Who ever desires to move with kings, let him be like men that warm themselves at a fire; let him not approach too near nor stand too far away.
